I was 12 in 1999 and will be the first person to admit that I ate and slept pro wrestling back then. My love for WCW was starting to cool off as their product started to go into a tailspin, but I was never more hooked on the WWF.
It should also be mentioned that the WWF Attitude Era was at its peak as wrestling became more popular and mainstream than it had been since the Hulkamania boom in the 80s. All the kids in my middle school watched and we'd always talk about what had happened on Raw during homeroom on Tuesday morning.
However... when I took off the nostalgia blinders and think back to that year for the WWF it is nowhere near as good as I remember it being. Most of this is concerning the in-ring quality and creative stuff. Coming off what I'd consider banner years in 1997-1998, I felt like 1999 fell short.
Most of the major PPVs were underwhelming and, personally speaking, Wrestlemania XV sucked. The angles were getting either too crude or just plain ridiculous. Also, I felt like the overall match quality fell off compared to previous years.
Like everything, of course there are some bright spots for example Mankind winning the belt, Jericho debuting and even the rise of HHH towards the end of the year. As a whole, however, what could and should have been an amazing year was kind of a mess looking back now.
Agree? Disagree? Also, Owen Hart passing always leaves a black cloud over 1999 when I think back to the WWF that year.

TVs were great but on PPV the WWF were a trainwreck, main event was usually good but rest of the midcard was horse****.

All you have to do is look at Mania XV. That show was overbooked into oblivion.

You can't try to break a part that era of the WWE. The Attitude Era can be summed up with one word... fun. It was just a fun time. Matches were short, title changes happened frequently, but the crowd was always into it and loving every moment. So it wasn't that it was a sloppy time, it was just a fun time.

I just think that the in-ring quality wasn't up to par with what we were getting in 1997-1998 and even 2000.

99 was definitely the weakest year of the AE but like hbkbigdaddycool said it was still fun. I remember tuning in each week to see what would happen next. The in-ring stuff yeah was bad for the most part but the angles/characters was the stuff that kept you invested. On the topic of Mania XV, I'm surprised they never came back to Philly again considering the big success it was here. It drew over 20k and even had a good turnout at that ''Rage Party'' at the Convention Center. I remember almost going but having to back out last minute. Owen's passing and Gorilla's passing is what made 99 a bad year for me.

(and no insult meant calling you vinny ru)

I have 1999 as the #3 worst year in wrestling history after 2007 and 2015. WWF and WCW were both feces and the best wrestling on TV then was ECW on TNN and WCW Saturday Night. If there is one good thing about that year, is that both companies utilized their massive rosters very well. Even midcard jobbers had their own storylines and feuds.

Sorry but I could not disagree more. The WWE evolved in 1999 and the seeds of the future were planted.
Heres an example. Big Show debut Stephanie debut Kurt Ange debut Chris Jericho debut The Dudley Boyz debut Smackdown debut The Hardy Boyz left their jobber status Ministry Undertaker was awesome HHH became a main eventer Foley won the title The Rock became a super face Austin's injury let other guys headline Kane and X Pac were a great team
1999 was fun and anything could've happened which made it so exciting. I have so many fond memories of that year as a kid.

It started off good. The Rock Mankind feud was really good. The Royal Rumble was fun. Big Show’s debut good.

The Attitude Era in general wasnt very good. The story telling was mediocre, the ring work was mediocre....we were just teenagers that laughed at ever dick joke & seeing boobs wasnt as easy as it is today so we ate it up.

It may not have been the best year, but it was a financial success no doubt. Compared to 1998, net income was up in 1999 (fiscal year ending April 30, 2000) by over $2 Million and revenues exploded by a $177 Million, plus attendance was up by 200k.

Just like any other era the Attitude Era had its good and bad, but because they were highlighting the T&A every week people look back on it as the greatest era in wrestling. And truth be told it was farrrrrr from it. As for ‘99 it wasn’t really any different than any other year.

IMO 2003 and 2006 were two of the worst years in wwe history. 1999 was by far the weakest of the attitude era.

The one positive about 1999 was that the Jakks BCA figures were red hot and very awesome to play with. The 18 year old teenage me would sit in my english class during last period and think up what matches I would have that night when I got home.

My 16-18 year old self would do that with the Hasbro figures. Then when Galoob started making those WCW figures that were roughly the same size, I was having a Monday Night War PPV every week with my friends years before such a thing ever even happened in reality!
