On this day in 1997, something happened in Montreal. Still remember this from then as one of the biggest moments in wrestling. Also remember Vince saying "Bret screwed Bret"

I remember watching this live and I still have the VHS tape I made off the PPV. As soon as Hebner rang the bell I knew what was going on. Everyone knew Bret was leaving and I just figured, "ah, that's how they are gonna do it." I still think it was a work between Bret and McMahon. What better angle for Bret to go into WCW with? And of course, they screwed it up.

I still wish that Abeyance would have just won it on RAW,though. I wonder if it will be admitted a work on the death beds of anyone involved with it.

If it was a work, it's the greatest work in the history of pro wrestling!
If it was real, it was one of the craziest real life moments to appear on a television screen for us to see!
Either way, it's been over 20 years, and we are still talking about it. So the WWE did something right back then.

The thing that drives me nuts is the whole thing could easily have been avoided. If you know Bret's contract is up, you get the title off him long before Survivor Series. Pushing it till the last minute was stupid.

But didn’t Vince offer him a new contract then at the last minute he told Bret he couldn’t honor it and he should go to WCW? I thought that happened in “Wrestling with Shadows”

But didn’t Vince offer him a new contract then at the last minute he told Bret he couldn’t honor it and he should go to WCW? I thought that happened in “Wrestling with Shadows” Bret Hart signed his twenty year deal in October 1996. Vince told him he couldn't honor it in mid 97. Hart signed his WCW contract on November 1st 1997 with a start date of December 5th 1997. So if a year later into the contract is considered last minute then yes he did. But I don't consider that last minute.

I remember this documentary came out on A&E channel I think soon after. Worth checking out if you hadn't. Hitman Hart, Wrestling With Shadows.
Best parts are of Bret's wife asking HHH and Shawn after if they knew about what was going to happen..

Also soon after Bret went to WCW, Davey Boy Smith and Jim Neidhart went there to. But Owen did not. So makes you think if Bret stayed or Owen went to WCW that maybe Owen would still be with us..

22 goddamn years and Bret’s still probably pissy about it. 21.* And wouldn't you be? He has every right to be. Never got his win back from WM12, had the title quite literally stolen from him against what he agreed to. He had/has every right to be angry that that's how his loyalty was returned.

He does but he’s so damn bitter about every little thing now that it seems ridiculous to be mad about it. Seriously he needs to grow the hell up and stop whining like a baby.
