1. Over-distribution 2. Releasing exact repaints as an exclusive HOF line for K-Mart as the original figs were still sitting on pegs. So in conclusion distribution is still the Bane of Mattel’s existence. All Mattel do is re release the same series with a different name and wonder why the results aren't different.

They didn't have enough big names signed at the start of the line They did so. WWE placed huge restrictions on them. No one that was active could be in the Legends line. That took away HBK, Kane, Undertaker, Triple H, Mysterio, Jericho, Goldust, Edge, & Christian. And while they didn’t have Macho, Warrior, & Bret at launch they had enough guys to get through Year 1. Rock Austin Triple H Undertaker Steamboat LOD Slaughter Dusty Jake Roberts Kamala Rick Rude Sheik Volkoff Snuka Funk Vader Perfect Hacksaw Bulldog Pillman Kane HBK Jannetty Bushwhackers Mysterio Goldust Edge Christian Jericho I could have a field day making lineups with those guys Plus they were signing talent not under legend contracts like Jakks and THQ/2K. Macho and Warrior I believe were under Mattel deals prior to ever officially coming back to WWE.

I’d have done something like this
Singles 1: Undertaker (purple gloves) Steamboat (white) Kane (half mask) Triple H (hHh) Rock (Hollywood heel) Jericho (red barbed wire tights)
Two Packs 1: LOD (red) Rock vs Austin (Wrestlemania 15) Rockers
Singles 2: Austin (jeans and vest) HBK (Royal Rumble 98) Kamala Jake Roberts (flame pants) Snuka (barefoot) Mysterio (WCW)
Two Packs 2: Sheik & Volkoff Undertaker & Kane (1998) Edge & Christian (2000)
And so on and so forth

I also wish that the Walmart line was called Legends or something other than Flashbacks. Flashbacks was already established being part of the main line. Got too confusing calling two different lineups the same thing.

So how many elite lines have died?
Legends Hall of Fame Defining Moments (twice) Entrance Greats Then Now Forever Best of PPV Fan Central (likely dead) Hall of Champions (hiatus but probably dead) Walmart Flashbacks (hiatus but probably dead) Best of Attitude Era (status unknown) NXT (dying a slow death) Womens (see NXT) Network Spotlight* Limited Edition*
Am I forgetting any?

As also mentioned, Bill Kerner also confirmed in one of the early interview Q&As that if a talent was on TV the WWE didn't want a flashback that would confuse the audience. The WWE wanted the current representation of the rosters. I believe this was when he was asked about The Natural Dustin Rhodes.

Wow! Crazy! Why is it so hard for Mattel to sustain a Legends line while Jakks kept pumping out Classics at a pretty intense pace (singles, 2-packs, 3-packs, exclusives, etc.) for so many years?

WOW! That list is sad and pathetic at the same time. It looks like they don't really know how to market and sell legends figures?! They just launch line after line, trying different things that in the end have all failed. They had the right formula IMO of incorporating legends into the main elite line- they should have stuck with this but chose instead to spin the legends off into their own separate lines which was wrong. What I would have done is keep the legends part of the main elite line BUT move them into their own set. For example every 5 series I would have released two sets- the main set featuring figures of the current talent AND a second set featuring only legends (mix of 1st time in the line and repaints). This would have allowed both fan bases (current product collectors & legends collectors) to be able to collect the figures they are interested in and being part of the main line the legends wave would have been available to everyone.

Flashbacks and Hall of Champions were good. The problem was retailers were stupid and ordered sets like they just sniffed some really good paint.I think this has been the case throughout for most of these exclusive lines and IMO is one of the contributing factors for the various exclusive lines being discontinued. Mattel should have sales reps meeting with retailers and going into stores to see how their product is being displayed, how much product is on the shelf, how long it takes for existing product to sell out and how often new product is being put on the shelf. If you had people who know the product and know what sells and what doesn't then a lot of the mistakes that are happening (over ordering certain waves for example) would not be happening.

Only once as an elite line though. Was originally basic. It still died Yeah I know but I was only listing elite lines that died and it only failed once as an elite line. DM died twice as an elite. I guess you can say Fan Central died twice since there was the Raw t-shirt 3D hands elite Cena in the FC line.

I think a lot of it had to do with poor timing. People had been buying Jakks Classic Superstars up until they lost the license and Mattel took over. It took some time for Mattel to fully win over collectors (myself included) for various reasons, one being that they didn’t wanna start over from scratch buying new versions of the same figures they just bought. I know my plan when Mattel started was to just buy the characters that Jakks hadn’t made, but after a while Mattel really won me over. I think also Mattel anticipated that some collectors might be hesitant to buy new figures of the characters Jakks had just released, so they decided to go with different attire choices (white and blue Slaughter, Snuka in tights and boots, black Road Warriors instead of the red pads). This idea sounded good but maybe wasn’t the best choice.
But again I think it’s mostly timing. I think if they had slowly started introducing Flashbacks into the main lines and then a few years into it tried the Legends line, it probably would have worked better.

I can see why Mattel chose to try so hard to convert wrestling figure collectors who collected other brands. However for me personally, I never liked/bought any wrestling figures ever until Mattel started because I actually liked the Mattel figures. ....So here I wanted to start a collection and the characters and attires they were putting out weren’t desirable to me despite the higher quality figures.
