I was just thinking, and maybe this has been discussed before, but:
How does Mattel/Bill decide who gets a cloth shirt vs a rubber one? Is there any rhyme or reason to this? Samoa Joe has cloth shirts for each of his Elites, but DIY gets the rubber ones. Cena has had a cloth shirt for almost every Elite, but his DM gets a rubber tanktop? This perplexes me. What do you think?

I think I know why - mainly the fact they have to adhere to a budget for each line/wave. But I would also be interested to know how they decide who gets what. I think it must be down to expected sales. Looking at Cena, Shield, Undisputed Era with cloth. Maybe the plastic for midcarders.
And yeah Bill hates the term rubber.😅

I think it depends how the shirts look in the reference pics and what material they feel will best represent that, people are always quick to moan about not using cloth, but there are times when they shouldnt

James Elsworth got a cloth shirt while Macho Man gets a rubber (plastic) one. go figure
They need to give Fin Balor a jacket made like the DM Crow Sting or the New Uso jacket.

As the velcro often prevents them from doing so. So like Eddie's HOF one.

Very much budget driven I believe. Also - design on the shirt plays a part. That said no doubt that Bill personal preference plays a part as well. And honestly, I think that is one of few areas Mattel has let the line down on occasion- some truely baffling decisions.

I love what Mattel do and could not be happier with the interchangeable hands/heads. The only problem I really have is why they choose to make the 1st NXT Tag Belts painted. Rather than VAC/Shiny. So they're essentially basic belts packed with an elite. All other current belts are perfect, just this one wonder why?

It’s brought up in every q&a he does. And it’s always the same answer...it’s whatever the budget for the wave dictates.

This plays into more than just shirts and accessories I believe. Bill seems to use himself as the model for the collectors interests in most of what he does. (Legends/flashbacks especially)

If something needs a lot of little detail, plastic is better. Look at vests and coats. They wouldn’t have the buckles, zippers, textures if they were cloth, it would cost too much. Balors jacket is annoying but he wears those ones with ribbed sleeves and the little details would be missing. I wish the arm holes were smaller because you could cut them off and put black suit arms on for mobility.

I can understand the reasons why they don't/can't use cloth sometimes, I just wish the rub... I mean plastic shirts looked better and were better fitting - especially the common "bulletproof vest" one. I've seen people trim about 5-6mm off these vests/shirts and they look so much better - you'd think a huge company like Mattel would be able to do the same...

What do you think of Tye Dillinger getting his entrance vest rather than a shirt?

I wish they’d make an Undertaker or an Edge with interchangeable arms to have their jacket or ring gear. Jakks used to articulate some entrance gear but the problem was they didn’t give you another set of arms

What do you think of Tye Dillinger getting his entrance vest rather than a shirt? I liked the vest. But I absolutely wouldve preferred a nice cloth "Perfect 10" shirt. Its one of the reasons Im hoping for another Tye elite. But it doesnt seem likely at this point.

I have a theory Bill makes cloth accessories for all releases solely for himself. He swims around in them like Scrooge McDuck in his bedroom at night.

Ellsworth needed the cloth to help sell and give the look of the shirt that was selling hot. And the macho one if your refering gamestop or elite 42 to the rubber shirt with cut frills at the sleeves he said its only because it be very hard to cut that thin and small without messing it up or not we have threads where everybody would get mad at the cloth macho shirt

Most of the time it's budget. Cloth isn't getting cheaper. If someone else is eating the budget in the set, i.e. when HTM and his detailed cloth jumpsuit AND guitar was in the same Elite wave as AJ, someone (AJ) has to have their attire or accessories sacrificed since everything is measured per-wave as a whole. We were also told that AJ's deco at the time was very costly to do at a Basic level, so that factored in, too.
Other times, it's something based on how they wear their shirts. Savage would probably look weird with his fringy shirts having awkwardly large cuts instead of molded fringe. Also, with all the detail, it might be harder to get it to look right on cloth over painted on plastic. In his case though, I don't know why they just don't make a new torso mold for him so it wouldn't eat into his cost as much. That way we could one day get his jacket ala Sting. Better than nothing.
I'm glad they don't do as many rubber sleeved shirts and they used to. Those universally look awful, though the half-shirts (like Rey's) tend to look good in soft plastic. I don't like DIY's shirts AT ALL though - I wish they'd either retire that mold or just retool it to fit better like Seth's entrance shirts do.

Based off what Bill said about Dude Love's Elite, it definitely sounds like it's all about budget, and it seems to be cheaper to produce a molded shirt vs. a cloth shirt. Which is strange to me, I really would think molding a shirt would be more expensive rather than gluing a sticker on a cheap looking piece of fabric. But I maybe they have tons of molded shirts laying around and it's just cheaper to print graphics on one of those than what I said about the fabric shirts.
I understand loose collectors enjoy the fabric shirts because it's easier to pose figures in them, but as a MOC collector, the fabric shirts just makes the figures look cheap.
