This month marks the 25th anniversary of one of my most cherished events ever. I've said it plenty of times before, but Survivor Series 1993 has always been special to me as it's the first WWF PPV that I ever saw. I rented the VHS so frequently from Palmer Video on St. George's Ave. that they offered to sell my dad the tape. The tracking on that thing was worn down to nothing with how many times I watched it.
Not trying to let nostalgia totally blind me, I understand that my admiration for how awesome of a show it was is somewhat jaded. 1993 is regarded by many as "dark days" for the WWF with all the corny gimmicks and characters. Wrestling wasn't cool anymore like it was in the 80s and we still weren't even in the New Generation era quite yet. It was definitely a conflicted time for the company where they went through serious growing pains to figure out which direction they were going.
I'm just curious if anybody else likes this show? Whether it be for nostalgic reasons or maybe you just actually enjoy the card. Or maybe you hate it and hope to never have to watch it again.
One thing that I've always loved about this particular event is that it is one of the last Survivor Series that just totally reeks of the Thanksgiving season. It took place on Thanksgiving Eve '93 and there is just something about this show being held at the historic Boston Gardens (the last WWF PPV ever held there) that really encompasses those nostalgic Turkey Day vibes.
The opening match remains one of my favorite Survivor Series elimination matches of all-time. Also, this event plants the seeds of Owen finally jumping out of Bret's shadow which led to one of the hottest feuds in 1994.
This is the show that officially took Doink behind the barn and put him out of his misery. Borne was gone by this point so it is almost therapeutic to watch now as he would have been sickened to see how neutered the character would become for the rest of its days.
Lex Luger got a clean pinfall over Ludvig Borga and celebrated with Santa Claus to close the show. He seemed destined for WWF Championship greatness as he waved the American flag with snow falling around them in the arena. Who would have guessed that this was already the beginning of the end for Lex in the WWF?
I'm still pissed Tatanka was written out of the main event. 😢
Last mentions go to Bobby "The Brain" Heenan as this would be his final PPV in the WWF and let me tell you all, he went out with a bang. Instead of mailing it in for his farewell, Bobby was on his A-game all night never missing a beat as quick as ever. This event is worth a watch for his commentary alone.
The 1993 Survivor Series is also the last to use that original Survivor Series theme which might be one of my favorites ever. That saxophone! 🎷
Looking forward to the feedback on this one. 🍻
