Just realized this is an anniversary year. Starrcade '83 : A Flair For The Gold was held 35 years ago. While WrestleMania is certainly it's own beast, merging wrestling and celebrities, Starrcade was arguably the first wrestling SuperShow, and if it had bombed I always wonder if Vince would've even thought of taking the gamble on the first Mania.
Looking back on it today, it doesn't seem as special beyond being the first NWA supershow, but it had the brutal Piper vs Valentine Dog Collar Match where Roddy lost the hearing in one ear, the (unfortunately) short-lived team of Steamboat and Youngblood capturing the world Tag Titles, and Flair ending Harley Race's final NWA World Championship reign. And of course it set the precedent of having a yearly wrestling supershow as well as directly leading to the creation of Survivor Series as McMahon specifically created the PPV to go up against Starrcade in the 80's battle for wrestling dominance.

I wonder if wwe had the anniversary in mind when deciding to air a Starcade special this Sunday?

I'll always remember the 1st Starrcade for Flair/Race and Piper/Valentine. Those are 2 matches right there I always recommend to younger fans who wanna dive into old school wrestling.

I've had a tradition of watching the WWE Starcade DVD set every year around Thanksgiving, usually along my old taped VHS of Starcade '85-'88. Being from right outside of Greensboro, I've always loved the area's connection with wrestling, especially during the original Starcade-era. The original Starcade was practically WrestleMania before it existed. The '84 version was terrible by today's standards, but they picked it up for a few years after, then it never quite felt like the "wrestling Superbowl", save for maybe 1 or 2 show's in the 90's. There's alot of wrestling history tied to Starcade though, and lot's of good matches throughout it's nostalgic run.

Starrcade '83 is still pretty cool to watch for nostalgia reasons, or to see certain wrestlers in action that you may have not seen anywhere else.
But I felt the Race vs. Flair match to be kind of bad. I never cared for it even though it was the main event.

I always felt the Piper vs Valentine dog collar match was worth the price of the show itself.

What's sad is seeing WWE's Starrcade just being another house show. History is always re-written by the victors, so I guess Vince can do whatever the heck he wants with the Starrcade legacy.
