Not many people can say that they created a cultural icon.

That is really sad.
I first experienced SpongeBob while I was at University and even though I found him hilarious. Now as a parent, SpongeBob is something that my son has gotten many years of enjoyment out of from the TV show, movies, toys, and video games so SpongeBob has been just as big a part of my families life as anything from Disney has. This gentleman created a true pop culture icon and something that can be not just enjoyed by kids, but the parents of those kids as well.

This is devastating news. I was 10 when SpongeBob premiered. The show had a huge impact on my life. Thank you, Stephen Hillenburg.

Without denying its cultural impact, I can't say that I ever fully embraced SpongeBob. That being said, Hillenburg's first foray into the mainstream with his work on Rocko's Modern Life was such an integral piece of my childhood viewing routine that this one stings all the same. It's easily my second favorite of the earlier batch of Nicktoons, and it was way ahead of it's time in a lot of ways. It's easy to look at something like SpongeBob, which is unquestionably Hillenburg's magnum opus, and be able to see, through that, how much influence he imparted during his time on Rocko.
It's hell getting old. More and more of your childhood dies off every day.

Heartbroken. Call it the selfish part of me, but I hope it doesn't end. Been on the air for 20 years, surely there's a team that can continue to animate the show.
