I've been watching a bunch of old matches from 2009 tonight and i came across a storyline that i would've loved to see go far, but it was unfortunately cut short.
EDGE & CHRIS JERICHO'S TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP RUN - 2009.
Edge & Chris Jericho winning the Unified Tag Team Championships. With Jericho out of the IC Title picture, and Edge out of the World Title picture, them teaming up was something interesting and new at the time. From both of them being bitter about not having a position on the card, to being put in the Tag match then 'stealing' the Tag Titles, all in the same night, it was something that seemed great for both of them. Obviously we all know Edge got injured shortly after this win, but it leaves me wondering how far they would've taken that Storyline, how long they would've held onto the Tag titles and how long it would've taken for them to split up.
Personally, i would've liked to see them hold onto the Titles through to WrestleMania, where i would've had them lose to The Hart Dynasty, giving them the big win and solidifying them as a top team (Edge & Y2J would've likely wanted them to go over anyway) after this, Jericho would've turned on Edge which would then lead to their singles feud starting and carrying over onto RAW since they both got Drafted, then eventually go into the actual turn of events where they would join team WWE to take on Nexus.
Now with this, Edge wouldn't have gotten injured and returned to win the Rumble, and Jericho wouldn't have won the World Title. So i would've gone the route of HBK winning the Rumble in desperate fashion (To get a shot at The Undertaker again) then instead of costing Taker the World Title in the Elimination Chamber like what actually happened, i'd have HBK cost whoever is in there last with Taker, ensuring Taker holds onto the title so HBK can challenge him at Mania. Then this would play out the same way as it actually did with HBK retiring, only this time the Title would be on the line and Taker retaining.
Also at Mania, i'd have Kane win the MITB then cash in on Taker at one of the following PPV's before the actual MITB PPV where he actually won. Then at MITB, i'd have Christian win it (Where Kane won in the actual events) and hold onto it until the build to Wrestlemania, where he would announce his cash in on his best friend Edge (Who won the title the same way he actually did at TLC after going back to Smackdown) This way Edge still holds the title going into Mania and ultimately has his last match there, but it saves us from Del Rio winning the Rumble which would've gone to Cena by eliminating Riley and continuing his feud with The Miz.
So that's my take on what could've happened, had Edge not been injured during his Tag title run in 2009. Are there any short feuds you wanted to see go far? Whether they were cut short by creative or injury?
Feel free to elaborate on them and fantasy book what you think could've happened.
CHRIS BENOIT'S ECW RUN - 2007. (UPDATE 7/1/19)
I watched a documentary on Benoit last night and went back to watch his few 2007 ECW appearances. It led me to speculate what could have been, what would've come from his run. So here's my take.
Benoit was drafted to ECW and eventually won the right to compete for the ECW Title at vengeance against CM Punk, we know that. Supposedly he was meant to beat Punk and win the ECW Title at Vengeance, if this went to plan i feel like it would've helped keep ECW as a serious show for a lot longer, with a legitimate veteran as the champion.
Benoit would have been champion and the majority of ECW's new roster were young talent who'd be looking to take his spot. With this i could have seen Punk try and beat Benoit respectfully as Benoit was a Hero to him, Benoit would constantly get the better of Punk before he would eventually run out of shots after losing SummerSlam, then guys like Burke & Morrison would get shots through Unforgiven - Cyber Sunday (Nitro would still convert to Morrison but instead of being champion, it'd be as a new start for him on ECW). Big Daddy V would still join ECW and become Benoit's biggest threat, their program would go similar to how Punk/Vis actually went only it'd be Benoit vs Big Daddy V at Survivor Series instead of the actual triple threat that happened. This is where Mark Henry would come in with his alliance with Vis, they'd beat down Benoit before Punk returned and made the save, Armageddon would see Benoit/Punk vs Vis/Henry.
Benoit/Punk would pick up the unlikely victory over the Super Heavyweights, post match they'd be celebrating and Punk would turn on Benoit, becoming Heel. This would allow a more serious Punk to challenge Benoit and use Heel tactics to try and win. Punk would have to wait for his shot though as he was in the Royal Rumble match and shortly after on ECW, Tommy Dreamer would beat him to become No.1 Contender for a match at No Way Out (Benoit distracted Punk). During the Benoit vs Dreamer match at No Way Out, Punk would interfere and try cost Benoit the match but Benoit would ultimately retain the title.
Their WrestleMania match would be setup on the following ECW, with Punk attacking Benoit backstage then later in the show, Benoit getting sick of Punk so he challenges him to a match so he can finally put him in his place. The match would be made official - Chris Benoit vs CM Punk for the ECW title at WrestleMania, the weeks leading up to it would see them have promos, messing with each others matches and brawls. Then at WrestleMania, they'd have a classic technical match, back and forth with the crowd starting to respect Punk again, after a hard fought battle, Punk would be locked in the Crossface and fighting to stay in the match, similar to Bret vs Austin, Punk would only just get out of it. The match would conclude with PUnk catching Benoit with the GTS for the win and the Title. Post match Benoit would offer to shake hands with Punk for putting on an incredible match and beating him, Punk hesitates but the ovation from the crowd moves him into shaking Benoit's hand and a hug.
After this, Punk would move into a feud with Morrison and (THIS IS THE SAD PART) Benoit would ultimately pass away, why? It was revealed by Benoit's Sister in-law that after his Autopsy, he supposedly only had about 10 months to live anyway due to his body's condition, so in the timeline, 10 months on would fall around this time in April 2008. A tragic outcome in the end but it would ultimately spare us from the tragedy that actually happened.
That's my take on what could have happened had the Benoit tragedy not happened. If it never happened, this is how i would've booked his run.
