He died in the Blue Blazer costume. He was a joke in a time when the product was getting edgier. He was getting buried as a punishment for how Bret left and don’t think he could’ve ever recovered. Maybe he goes to WCW when his contract expires but he wouldn’t have faired any better there.

Owen would've made one hell of a heel commentator I thought. His work at KOTR 96 was absolute gold.

I thought he was getting punished because he refused to do an angle where he was going after another mans wife because his kids watched and he didn't want them thinking he was cheating on his wife, their mom.

Many have said that Owen only took on the Blazer gimmick because he had shot down so much stuff that he believed it was either he accepted or lost his job.

In a perfect world, Owen would have stayed living, Bret wouldn't have gotten injured, nor Davey Boy, and in 2000 Owen would have had Bret, Davey and Neidhart come out and all four go after Triple H, X-Pac, Road Dogg and Billy Gunn.
Man imagine the pop if they did this in any city in Canada. WWF IYH: Canadian Stampede 1997

This. They wanted him to feud with Jarrett, storyline being he was having an affair with Debra. There was another storyline too I think that he refused to do. That's when the Vince's came up with resurrecting the Blue Blazer gimmick and Owen wasn't keen on that either, but felt if he kept refusing Vince could say he was in breach of contract and withhold his money. Vince would've never fired him for it. There was a phone conversation Vince had with Bret in late 1997 where he told Bret he would never let Owen out of his contract early, and if Bret kept pushing it he would sue Bret for interference. And Owen would've retired as soon as his contract was up in 2000. He told multiple family members this as well as friends. After Montreal his heart wasn't in it as much anymore. And even if he had interest in WCW, by the time he would've been a free agent we're going well into 2000 - WCW was a mess, financially and creatively, Bret was no longer able to wrestle, Bulldog and Neidhart were long gone... I can't see any specific reason or circumstance where WCW would want to bring him in. 1998 ? Yeah, definitely. But not 2000.

WWF IYH: Canadian Stampede 1997 Might have been even louder than that, if you could imagine. Imagine the feud they could have had Bret vs. McMahon while Austin was on the shelf in 2000. Vince wanted to do it,too! After Owen died, Bret and Vince has a one-on-one meeting, and Vince said that he'd love to have Bret come back, and could have the writers come up with a storyline tomorrow where Bret comes back and wins the WWF Championship again. Of course there were several factors preventing this, not the least of which was that Bret was under contract to WCW. And of course by the time he was done with WCW he was injured and couldn't wrestle anyway. But it wouldn't have mattered because Vince then gave an interview talking about this meeting with Hart where he said that Bret made the whole conversation about himself and compared talking to Bret was like talking to a "Human Skeleton" , which only furthered the rift between them even more.

Maybe after getting tired of a stupid gimmick that he decided to go to WCW to be with Bret? I would've liked to see him work with some of the talent there and retire early.

I actually think he'd have ended up in WCW but if he didn't die we'd have seen Bret back a lot sooner than 2006.

He was going to use The Game moniker after the Blazer story ran it's course. After he died, the writers shelved the idea until giving it to Triple H.

he would be a NXT trainer now helping out Oje... I guess anything is possible, but I'm not convinced he'd be involved much aside from the rare cameo. The guy was already planning his escape from the business around the time he passed away. Not sure he'd be around in that kind of a full-time capacity almost twenty years later. Owen was a great wrestler and I'm sure he took pride in his trade, but many have gone on record saying that he wasn't in love with the business. He was one of the smart ones who got in to get out. Of course, everything is speculation so who knows?

I kind of feel he would have had a few IC title runs, maybe a short Tv feud with HHH for the title but not win it, then would retire when his contract ran out 2000 or 2001 maybe. With all the new talent coming in at the time or right after, he would have spent some time helping them and putting them over. I think one of the contributing factors Martha has with WWE is that Owen was on his way out when the accident happened.

he’d tried to leave the business in the early/mid90s. he wanted to be a firefighter but somehow failed the physical, as I recall.
losing Owen was hard here in Canada. the screw job had hurt the hart family but this was beyond tragic.
we lost teddy hart in this too. a phenomenal talent who if he’d had his family there overlooking him and keeping him from drugs could’ve developed into the next generation of Hart’s on wwe.
