It's nice to see them adding some more interesting names to the women's division. Allie does some good character work and has experience working on tv. And the gymnast from the UK indies they signed is super green, but seems to be absurdly athletic.

JR just said on his podcast he's been in talks with AEW and a deal should be done in the next few days, he'd be contributing by calling action at ringside.

I thought Excalibur did awesome at All In, would rather have him and Schivone then JR.

Scott Hudson is probably still around too... What do yall think the reasoning is on picking the commentary team? Are they looking for moves to be called, just a throwback voice, a bit of color and move calling? I ask, because I know there has to be a reason for the choice of JR, even though it baffles me.

BUT if they’re planning to use him as the senior commentator, adding in when he can and adding emotion, then i think it could work.

JR confirmed.
I don't like it. AEW needs their own voice and JR was horrendous for New Japan. JR is the voice of WWF from the 90s. I don't think it sends the right message, but I guess maybe they think it lends credibility. I know JR has been supportive and attached since largely the beginning but this doesn't feel like a move that fits an anti WWE culture.

I think as much as people are questioning JR, Cody said it best on today's "Road to Double or Nothing," ..."why JR?" Cause it's f'n JR.
If you're starting a football team and John Madden is available and has a desire to work for you, you hire him.
If you're starting a Basketball team and Phil Jackson is available and has a desire to work for you, you hire him.
Same can be said for Jim Ross. When you're the most tenured, most accomplished, and widely viewed as the GOAT of your profession, any new company should want your services.
I understand all of the criticisms of the signing, but I also understand AEW/Cody.
Also, Excalibur will be commentating too.
So no Tony Schiavone, who did come out and say on his podcast, he is NOT joining AEW. He said he's committed to Court Bauer / MLW and his broadcasting for Georgia Bulldog Basketball & Football plus the minor league Gwynnette Braves.

at the end of the day, jr did just as much behind the scenes hiring talent as he did onscreen. hiring him makes total sense. hopefully he gets a fitting role though.

I think people forget that JR has been in the business since the 70's and has held damn near every type of backstage role. He's respected, has a ton of connections, and has a good mind for the business.
That doesn't mean you have to stick him in front of a mic. But I think he still has something left in the tank. I think AEW is going to be going after a different audience than WWE, and aiming for lapsed fans across a couple of generations. And for anyone who watched wrestling from the early 90's through the 2010, JR's voice is synonymous with wrestling. To a casual or first time viewer, he's a known name and voice that gives a "big league" feel to the product. I'm hoping if he has a chance to really dig in and get comfortable with the product and characters from day 1 we might see something closer to Good Ole JR than to the shell in NJPW, the MYC, etc.

Hope the rumored weekly show in October is on a channel I get on my cable. So far it could be TNT/TBS, MTV/VH1, Paramount(ex Spike), CBS, A&E or WGN. Only one out of those I don't get is WGN(not available at all)...

I love that Cody's response to the question about hiring Jim Ross was "because he's ing Jim Ross."

JRs podcast dropped today too, and he gave away a lot more details. JR, Alex Marvez and Excalibur all three on commentary. Show is on Tuesdays. Keith Mitchell will be the producer, ala Kevin Dunn.

This companies ceiling is TNA. People that think they're gonna be serious competition to Vince is living in a fantasy world.
I want some competition for Vince because I was a HUGE WCW fan but this ain't it. Their biggest star mainstream and casual fan wise is Chris Jericho. Sure they'll have a great in ring product but that isn't going to get you to the level WCW was in 97/98.
