The recent topic about Owen Hart got me thinking about his death. It is something that I used to kind of be obsessed with just wanting to know as much information as possible about what happened. Even though their story together was special, I found myself even picking up his wife's book several years ago just because I knew it would offer classified courtroom/lawsuit details and other insight about what really happened that awful night. On that note, I'm surprised that I've never stumbled onto this particular video. I apologize if it is disturbing for some or for those who are already well aware of its existence, but this is the live feed of the Spanish commentators from ringside that evening. For some reason unlike their English counterparts, their mics are still audible once the first Blue Blazer promo starts. At the 0:25 mark, you clearly hear a loud crash which is undoubtedly Owen hitting the canvas.
Let it be known, I'm not some weirdo that gets off on this kind of stuff either. I'm just shocked that I never knew about this video until last night given my interest in the subject matter. I don't spend my days seeking out videos of people being killed on the Internet, but I've always had this morbid fascination with Owen's death for some reason. Maybe it has to due with the impressionable age I was when he passed (11) or the fact that he was one of the first wrestlers I watched when I became a diehard WWF fan. I can't really explain it. He just seemed like such a good person and it's awful to think that he died in vain. |

I remember when I heard about Owen's death and the news station that was on the TV at the time used footage of a masked wrestler falling through a table when they reported on the incident. For the longest time, I thought that was the actual footage of Owen's death.

Several news reports said he fell 50 feet. Another reported 100 feet. Some said the cable snapped. Others said he fell out of his harness. Plenty of articles said he landed headfirst on the turnbuckle. A few people swear they witnessed Vince cut the cable himself. Fans throughout the years coming out with BS stories saying they saw footage online or watched him fall during the actual PPV which is just untrue. Even more have claimed that WWE has some master copy of his death locked away in a panic room deep within Vince's private vault along with the Droz/D'Lo tape. I'd say that the majority of the stuff reported on the news or online immediately after the accident was plenty of speculation. Aside from these wild and often inaccurate rumors, it was very difficult to find out what actually happened online in 1999. |

JR announcing the tragedy always brings me right back to being 9 years old hearing it live. was crushing, here in Canada the Hart’s were a big deal.

I went to one of JR's one man shows last year or so and there was a guy in the crowd who was at Over the Edge when he was a kid and he talked about being there live and he said something along the lines of it happened really fast that literally nobody had any idea as to what happened.

The entire fall only took maybe 2-3 seconds. There is this belief that the arena was dark at the time because they were playing a video package for the crowd when he fell. However, there is photo evidence that while the lights were definitely dimmed, the primary ring area was still fairly visible to those in the crowd. I have no doubt that some people in attendance witnessed his fall, but the likelihood that somebody was recording a video (especially in 1999) or snapped a pic in such a narrow window is really tough to imagine. |

Yeah, I have seen those pictures as well. I believe they were playing his last interview on the screen as he made his descent. That what it sounded like in the video you posted anyway. I've heard the WWF didn't allow video cameras or anything into the shows back then so yeah, I agree with that.

My gut instinct tells me that WWF does have some kind of footage under lock and key. One of the cameras had to be on Owen as they were mere seconds away from his entrance and they obviously knew he was coming down from the rafters. |

One of the cameras had to be on Owen as they were mere seconds away from his entrance and they obviously knew he was coming down from the rafters. I think they have to keep the footage for legal reasons. I believe that they have the footage locked away somewhere as well. |

Nearly 20 years later but it still feels like it was yesterday. I remember watching the PPV that night in just shock and disbelief. I'll never forget the feeling I felt on that terrible night.

I don't get lost on the fact that it has been almost 20 years. You're right. That is a landmark anniversary no matter good or bad. Regardless, it is important for fans to always remember Owen whether it be for the human being or simply the wrestler. |

I wish I'd appreciated him more as a wrestler though. Just from listening to that Blue Blazer promo,he had so much talent on the mic and in the ring. |

Listen to Steve Austin's podcast with ref Jimmy Corderas. He was the ref in the ring when Owen fell. It's chilling to hear from the guy Owen almost fell on. There would have been two deaths if that happened!

Owen fell nearly 80 feet and while that is a terrifying height, the reality is it probably only took 2-3 seconds for him to hit the canvas. I could never even imagine what was going through Owen's mind in those last moments, but I doubt it was concern over who he might land on. In her book, Martha said that the people in charge of the stunt on the catwalk witnessed the entire fall. Owen was spiraling sideways and clawing at the air. They confirmed he was indeed screaming although I'm sure that was more out of sheer terror than it was to alert the referee. |

People say if Owen would have not done the stunt he would have been fired. First of all, what kind of cold blooded company is wwe if that is true? Secondly, at least he'd be alive and at the time wcw existed and would have been interested. He could have joined Bret there!
