I agree, the early part of 1996 was still good/decent, you had Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Undertaker, Diesel, Razor, Goldust, Davey Boy, and Owen. You also added Vader and had Warrior and Jake return. I would probably agree with you as well with your assessments of the PPVs, the best were at the beginning of the year and probably in order with Royal Rumble being the best, then Mania, then KotR, then SummerSlam, and finally Survivor Series. They did have some good matches during the year, the Royal Rumble was definitely better than the previous year and the Bret/Taker and Razor/Goldust matches were good. Of course, Bret/Shawn at Mania was a great match but I also liked the Taker/Diesel match and feud as well (probably Takers best match and feud at Mania during the gimmicky years). Shawn and Davey had some very good matches at IYH and KotR, and Austin really becoming Stonecold at that event as well. The only thing good I remember about the latter half of the year was the Austin/Bret feud and match at Survivor Series. But what hurt WWF the most during this year was the departure of some top talent and WCW creating the NWO angle which skyrocketed them to the top of the wrestling world for the next two years.

WWF- KOTR,Mind Games and SSeries were my favs from that year. The big highlights for me were the Taker/Foley feud and Austin's rise to the top.
WCW-The whole NWO angle and the cruiserweights getting a chance to shine were the highlights for me.
ECW- The Sandman/Raven feud was fantastic. I'm meeting Sandman tomorrow btw. I'm definitely going to bring up this feud for sure.
The year started rocky for WWF and WCW especially but man did they turn it up later in the year.

1996: not one of my fav WWF years, WCW stepped it up with the NWO forming! both had lots of great matches. wrestling was getting hot again after a couple rougher years (94/95). My fav part of WWF 1996 was the returns of warrior, piper & jake the snake. Loved that they had IYH shows for every month without a big ppv. Some of those shows had GREAT matches. none of the ppvs stood out as awesome to me. wm12 was prob best card of the year, but HATED the 60 minute iron man match. would have been better had they got a bunch of pinfalls and subs, like 6 to 6 at the end and shawn gets 7th pin. but overall some fun matches.

sid won the hw title
finally got a sid vs vader match at IYH 11
buried alive & boiler room brawl matchs with taker vs mankind
birth of stone cold
goldust was awesome
ahmed johnson was fun
worst:
rumble time again not 2 minutes, but 1.5 minutes? just too fast. 2 mins is the sweet spot.
vader didnt win wwf title at summerslam
short warrior matches, esp that lawler debacle, then him leaving never to come back to wwf & wrestle again
bret/shawn/owen taking over top spots vs hogan, savage, warrior, etc
survivor series! what a crap show. roster was hurting by then
no high profile vader vs yokozuna match. was hoping for a huge match

Yeah, I was really hoping for Warrior to do something in his return but too many short matches, biggest debacle for me was that Goldust thing at IYH, I can't believe they put that on the PPV. Warrior just walking around, goldust talking, then warrior clotheslines goldust out of his chair and slams his big fat bodyguard. Total waste. |

I get that people hate the WWF for the job gimmicks but honestly most of them did not even make it to a single PPV appearance. So it's not like you were throwing away 30 bucks a month to see one of the job gimmicks. And out of the guys you listed, only 1 of them had double digit Monday Night Raw appearances and that was The Sultan. The Sultan was also the only one out of the guys you listed that made a PPV appearance during that time (The Goon was at Wrestlemania Gimmick Battle Royal). Most of the job gimmicks were treated as jobbers on Raw, while they might get a win on Superstars or Shotgun Saturday Night. Most of the job gimmicks that did make it to PPV were the tag teams, or Duke Droese with his one singles match against Triple H. |

Bret vs Shawn at Mania - some hate this match, but it was a clinic.
Goldust - he owned the year. So much heat it was insane!
Stone Cold - the Rise began here.
Undertaker vs Mankind - as intense of a feud as you can get
Bret vs Austin at Survivor Series - the promos leading up to it and the match itself were superb.
Pillman's Got a Gun - controversial as it still is, it was absolutely riveting TV.
Shawn vs Diesel at Good Friends, Better Enemies - arguably the first Hardcore Match in WWF history, it was a barnburner!
The Bad :
Fake Razor and Diesel... enough said!
Survivor Series - other than Bret-Austin,was kinda lackluster considering all the talent involved
Vader - who knew when he signed it was the beginning of the end for him?
Marc Mero and Sable as Fake Macho Man and Elizabeth
J.R.'s Brief Heel Turn
Austin as The Ringmaster - thank God he turned it around
Tag Team Division - still in the crapper
Ultimate Warrior - 3rd WWF run was really kind of a waste

It definitely was 84, I wanna say it was on the Greatest Stars of the 80s DVD that came out years ago.
Did you ever see Hogan vs. Slaughter boot camp match from MSG in 1991?? That one was brutal. Not as in a bad match, but as in a bloody, hardcore match.

Ill keep it to just WWF...Also? 1996 had LOTS of good stuff in WWF....WAY MORE than just HBK.
Most matches that HBK was in....Vs Owen in Feb, Nash in April...Bulldog in May & June, Mankind in Sept, Sid in November and more besides on TV etc.
UT vs Mankind Feud....groundbreaking. simple as.
Austin winning the KOTR and THAT speech.
Bearers heel turn. NOBODY seen that coming.
Austin's feuds with Hart & Pillman
Nash was a revelation as Diesel from January to his departure. A BIG loss for Vince.
Harts return and slow burn turn....GREAT stuff.
HHHs punishment for the curtain call....turned out for the best.
Hall & Nash leaving....also for the best.
The Bad:
WM12....easily one of the worst in history. UT vs Diesel was awesome though.
Vader's Booking....the match against Hall on PPV in April was a real bad sign.
Hall & Nash departing. bad for WWF....(GREAT for the entire business on the whole)
Fake Diesel & Razor....I mean...FFS.
Billionaire Ted skits... served no purpose only to fuel interest in what WCW was doing.
Marc Mero....brought in with so much fanfare...BUT? Vince lost interest in him as quick as a hiccup to quote ol JR.
Tag scene.....Jesus.
Vince having multiple orgasms on the mic over HBK ALL THE TIME.....OMG. He was awful on commentary.
Hart being absent for 6 months after WM....left a HUGE hole.
Austin as Ringmaster....thankfully it was short lived.

1996 was like that awkward puberty phase for the WWF.
Lots of change. Some of it good, some of it not very good. It signaled the end of the New Generation and the dawn of the Attitiude Era, but there were still silly gimmicks and storylines galore while business was in the crapper. Regardless, 1996 was a pivotal year for sure with the seeds it planted.
Meanwhile, WCW was on fire. If the WWF felt like a little kid's show, the nWo was the cool older brother everybody wanted to hang out with.
