How do you think his career would have played out? What kind of matches and fueds do think they would have done with him? I feel he would have obviously been matched up with heenan family guys nad other big men. I've read he was supposed to have the program with Andre until next year at and build it up slowly with only them facing each other on televised broadcasts in summerslam, survivor series, and the royal rumble match. then final at wm6. also always wondered why he never went to nwa/wcw after that. matches with sid/vader would have been cool there. im guessing it would have prob went something like this: studd/demolition vs andre/towers at summerslam studd,duggan,rockers vs andre,haku,busters at survivor series both andre/studd in 1990 rumble with one of them throwing the other out then the big single match at wm6. from there im not sure. maybe bundy would have come back sooner and attacked studd for heenan and had a big studd vs bundy fued. or saved studd from a andre/haku attack at mania and had tag matches with them. later would have prob ended up in matches with earthqauke, bigelow, yoko, gonzales, etc. just curious to know what you guys think as he was one of my fav wrestlers and i was sooo happy he came back in '89 and as a good guy vs heenan and then was soooo bummed he just left and NEVER returned to wrestling. Update: just got a new tv guide ad for summerslam89 and it looks like Big John WAS scheduled to tag with Demolition in the 6 man tag match: Attachment Deleted |

The first signs of cancer showed up in late ‘89 so if we’re being realistic, his days as a performer were numbered whether he stayed on or not.

I often wonder if Studd knew something was wrong with himself for him to just up and leave again before the summer of 1989.
Studd being a baby face seemed natural too. Like he was a great heel, but somehow when he returned in late 1988 he just fit the baby face role perfectly. Probably because Andre being heel helped that cause too though.

We definitely would've got something between him and Andre at SSlam that year but beyond that with his health taking a turn he most likely would've retired by years end.
I was always a John Studd fan. I'm glad he got that last big moment in the Rumble win.

I don't know, I heard the matches that he and Andre had at house shows were pretty bad. With both of them not being in the best health, I can't imagine them getting a singles match at WM6. Though, I agree, that if Studd had lasted at least to the end of 89, that he and Demolition would have faced Andre and the Twin Towers at Summer Slam. If I remember correctly, when Studd left Hillbilly Jim started wrestling his schedule then Hacksaw, so it makes since that he would have been in the 6-man tag match at Summer Slam with maybe Hacksaw and Haku have a single match at the PPV. If he had cancer at the end of 89, I doubt he would have been in the Survivor Series. But if he was still healthy enough to perform, the only difference I would see about the teams would be him on Warrior's team. Had he stayed, there would have been no reason for Hacksaw to face Andre and by then he would have moved on to Savage so Randy could get the crown - keeping the 4x4's vs the King's Court. And by the fall it seemed they were getting Warrior ready for Hogan so they would have wanted him to go over Andre so I think they would have still been captains of their respective teams. I can see Studd feuding with other members of the Heenan family and at that time that probably meant Haku. Had he been healthy enough to make it to Mania, it would have been cool for him to be in the rumble and them bring back Bundy as another Heenan family member. Have them eliminate each other in the rumble setting up a match at Mania 6.

No, but I've heard they were bad so I can't see them getting a singles match a year later at WM6. And you're right, it is understandable with their age and health. |

That's fine by me as after all it was the Golden Era.The best era in my book. |

I’ll likely be in the minority but Studd felt out of place in 89 in my opinion. Was fine for a quick bit of nostalgia, the Rumble win was a good achievement for him at a time that it didn’t mean too much (no WM title shot) and as guest referee in the Andre/Roberts match, but longer term I just don’t think he’d have added much value.
Andre was a stand out as the giant of the WWF and a good hand for trying to get the Warrior over. Also added an interesting dynamic to his team with Haku v Demolition. I would also argue that even with his health and heel person, he was the special attraction in the WWF at the time. By putting Studd in the mix it would have diluted Andre’s aura in my opinion. Studd had his own health issues, so would feature in that “special attraction” bracket himself.

Studd had his own health issues, so would feature in that “special attraction” bracket himself. i feel he still had something to offer. andre was andre and didnt hold him back any. could have things like have bundy come back and attack studd during a andre/studd match, and hogan makes the save, then we get a hulk/studd vs andre/bundy match after all those hulk/andre vs studd/bundy matches. or get a studd/bundy vs twin towers fued going. but also pklenty other big men for studd, but i do see what your sayin as he always felt like a 1985-86 guy to me as well. kinda like a JYD or nikolai volkoff. |

I could see Studd supporting Andre's hunt for the WWF title.
If he turns babyface starting with Studd being jealous of Heenan's alliance with Andre, I could see him being in a match with King Kong Bundy at WMIII, I think that would make better sense. After WMIII, Studd would continue a feud with the Heenan family, while wanting to challenge Andre. He could join Hogan's team at Survivor Series. He would continue to feud with Andre giving Andre some wins.
Another possibility is if Studd stays on as a heel, not sure what his role would be for WMIII. If Uncle Elmer was still around, you could have Studd & Bundy and their team versus Hilly Billy Jim and Elmer and their team. Studd could feud with Hogan again, maybe even bought by the Million Dollar Man in late 87. Then I would have him turn babyface after Dibiase dumps him for Andre's contract, so you get Dibiase and Studd in a feud.
