I think Crush came in to demolition because Ax was transitioning out of being an in ring performer. Didn't he have something seriously wrong with him? Some sort of allergic reaction that needed him up? According to Ax, they brought in Crush because after WrestleMania 6 Ax had a near death experience. After Mania, he was in Japan eating shrimp (I believe) and he went into anaphylactic shock (he said he had an out of body experience). He needed time off but WWF didn't want to do that so they brought in Crush to keep Demolition on the card since they were the champions. Supposedly after the Survivor Series he was supposed to become an agent but that fell through, I think he and the WWF got into a fight over who owned the Demolition name. Ax said he did because he came up with the name and look, however, WWF said they did because they collaborated with him in coming up with the team. I think a similar thing happened with Scott Hall when he jumped to WCW, he was still acting like Razor Ramon (especially in the way he talked) and the WWF said that it was character infringement or something and took him to court. There was also a falling out with Vince &, eadie because Vince wanted Demo to drop the paint and wear masks instead.

It is crazy how far Demolition fell in that one year. On top of the tag team wrestling world at Wrestlemania 6, to Wrestlemania 7 where they jobbed to two nobodies in a throwaway match.
Ax had the health issues so it's tough to blame WWF management for that, but the masks were a silly idea and even though their heel theme was pretty creepy that original song is still one of the best from its era.

It's sad how little honor Demolition has received from WWE over the last 20+ years and also during their last year with WWF. Vince McMahon was like a boy in a relationship with a women and once he got who he really wanted (LOD) he dropped the other (Demolition). Ax and Smash did more in their three plus years of being over than LOD did. After their 1990-92 WWF run they usually seemed to not last year long anywhere. I'm sure most of it comes down to Hawk's problems and Animal's insurance policy. Ax and Smash deserve a lot of credit. Even though I loved the Demolition gimmick, I'm sure older fans looked at it like a rip off of LOD/Road Warriors but Demolition made it on their own and became one of the top talents during a hot period of wrestling.

I’m quite ignorant of other feds that aren’t WWF but I was never a fan of Paul Ellering (not to mention Rocco!!). I’m quite glad that Hawk and Animal came in on their own.
I believe Ellering was their manager in the NWA. Was he any good then? How did you guys feel about him in the WWF as their manager?

I didn't really care for him, though, I never say him with them in the 80s (didn't start watching WCW until 1991). To me, he wasn't needed, Hawk and Animal could give interview's and promo's just fine that they didn't need a manager/mouth piece. I wonder if they brought him back to help keep an eye on Hawk. Unlike some managers, Ellering actually did help manage the Road Warrior's in the 80s (helped them with bookings, managing money, keeping an eye on them, etc.) I didn't care for Rocco, apparently Vince overheard that Ellering could do ventriloquism and that was all it took to get Rocco.
