Is it better to be a transitional champion or to never have been champion at all? IMO I'd rather not have been champ. Being a transition seems like it almost shouldn't count. They didn't want you on top they just wanted you to lose. It's like being best jobber. What do you guys think?
Sorry if this isn't the right board, I want sure where to put it.

I think even being Transiontional Champion is an honor, Iron Sheik is probably grateful that he was ever even WWE Champion, I know I'd be too.

For sure it's better to be a transitional WWE Champion rather than not be WWE Champion at all.
In the history books, names like Ivan Koloff, Stan Stasiak, Iron Sheik, Andre the Giant, Sgt. Slaughter, and others have their names there because they were WWE Champion - whether it be a day, a week, or a month.

Transitional Champion any day over not being Champ.
Being a transitional Champion, you're still recognised as a WWE Champ and will go down in history as one of the people to hold the title. Plus it makes you a stand out for that particular year, a kid could start watching wrestling that year and always remember you as a WWE Champion, even if it was just to lose it to a bigger name later on. Also, it basically puts you at the top of the card and gets more eyes on you, so who wouldn't want that.

At the end of the day, after you retire... you retire as a former champion... that's better than retiring without ever holding the title...

Transitional, no doubt. Edge’s first title reign was a transitional one and its his most memorable because of how he won.

Far better to be a champion than to not be a champion... although I feel bad for anyone who has less combined days as champion than Jinder Mahal.

I think there's absolutely merit in being a transitional champion. Even if one isn't in a position to be the guy to carry the company on his back, it's still a perfectly decent manner in which one can cement their name in the history books. Hulkamania is largely regarded as being born when Hogan escaped the Camel Clutch to pin The Iron Sheik. Sure, maybe the Sheik never had a marquee run with the belt, but his role was imperative in generating that hero's moment for Hogan.

It really depends on the situation. If you’re a transitional champion as part of a huge storyline it would be great. But then you have guys that had supremely amazing careers without having the title. What really matters at the end of the day is what you’re involved in.

Plus a lot have bragging rights saying you’ve accomplished what no one else were able to do. So what if Koloff’s reign was less than a month, he ended Bruno’s nearly 8 year run as champ. Sheik put an end to Backlund’s 5+ year reign. Andre took the title off Hogan after being unbeatable for 4 years.

Look at Jinder Mahal. If things continue down the current trajectory, his career already peaked. Based on his current status in the company, I would wager he won't be sniffing at any of the two major titles for years to come. Yet, he will always be remembered as a World Champion.
Was he a transitional champion? Nope. Was his reign amazing? Debatable. Will he ever reach that level again? I would say no. But, in the annals of history, his name will be associated with the WWE Championship.
So, yes. Any time you reach that title, it's a good thing. It's not the end all be all since guys like Rowdy Roddy Piper, Scott Hall, Ted Dibiase, and Mr. Wonderful never needed the belt to have a HOF career. Holding the belt, even for a day is still a nice recognition though.

For the most part, it at least means management feels you can draw enough heat so that when someone takes the title from you, it will make for a huge pop.

Winning the title, any title, is better than not getting it at all. Look at guys like Ryder, Ziggler, or Christian. They got their moment and you can never take that away from them. If Punk never won the WWE Title after MITB 2011, he would still have one of the single greatest title wins in the history of WWE, despite what happened next. So it's a no brainer imo. You take the title and soak up every damn second of the moment and worry about tomorrow when it comes.
Roddy Piper winning the IC Title at Rumble 92 is one of my very favorite moments of all time. I think we tend to remember great moments more so than every step of the journey. Look at Bryan winning the title(s) at WM30. I don't think they intended his run to be so short but the moment was the moment and what came after it was forgettable. As a fan, I'll take my moments with guys no matter how I can get them because it's better than not getting them at all.

I mean, yeah, obviously I'd rather be WWE champion for 5 minutes than never at all.

I would say transitional champion would be better but for arguments sake if I asked you who had the better careers, Iron Sheik & Sgt Slaughter or Mr. Perfect & Roddy Piper....can you really say Sheik & Slaughter simply because they were champion?

If we’re talking legacies, I would argue it’s only better if you end up with other subsequent title reigns.
Some wrestlers are actually looked down at because of transitional reigns so it’s more like a scarlet letter.

Isn't every champion transitional? Nobody is champion forever. But I understand what you mean. A long reign or a two day reign is a big difference. But honestly, I don't care about titles. I've been an indy "wrestler" for 16 years and have my fair share of titles, and it's cool for about a second to carry a belt, but when it all comes down to the end, I want to be more remembered for how much I've made people boo me. I cherish my "Most Hated Wrestler" award I've received more then any belt. Those awards are more meaningful.
But if I were in the WWE, just put me on tv and pay me. Transitional champions are treated as a joke. Right Jinder, Swagger, Ziggler, Rey, Sheik, Sarge, etc, etc. Doesn't everyone laugh when people refer to them as former champions?
