Variant(s) - a form or version of something that differs in some respect from other forms of the same thing or from a standard.
Variance - the fact or quality of being different, divergent, or inconsistent.
Some of you may know my Championship Title Belt collection origin, but for those that don’t, I’ve been collecting Championship Title Belts since December 9, 2001. The first two I owned were the WWF Shop kids sized plastic and foam Smoking Skull and Brahma Bull Championship Title Belts. About an hour and a half after I purchased them, The Rock loses the Big Gold Belt to Chris Jericho. About 12 minutes after that, Stone Cold Steve Austin loses the Big Eagle Belt to Chris Jericho.
I eventually started collecting the Jakks Pacific kids sized Championship Title Belts, but specifically the WWE versions. I didn’t collected the WWF versions, only because the “quality” had not improved until they “got the F out”. Between Professional Sports Wrestling Entertainment (WWE and TNA), MMA (UFC, Pride, and WEC), and Boxing (Rocky), I have 30 (31 if you count my second nWo Championship Title Belt, which I added DX stickers on the side plates, to make it my nDXWo Belt) different Championship Title Belts. The variety is so attractive to me.
I then made the transition and started collecting the Mattel kids sized Championship Title Belts. Today, I have 25 (26 if you count my Electro-Vision Spinner Championship Title Belt) “different” Championship Title Belts. I’m using the word “different” very loosely. There is some variance that I felt weren’t necessary enough for me to pick up, yet there are some variants that I felt were necessary enough for me to buy multiple versions of the same design.
The Winged Eagle, the WWECW, the Big Scratch, the Universal (technically), and the United Kingdom Belts all have just 1 version each. No issue there. The Spinner had a version that didn’t spin, but I didn’t get it, because they didn’t change the right side plate from “Mon Nite Raw” to “WWE Champion”. The Big Gold Belts had the original version with gems, the original version with parts of the plastic popped up and painted red to replace the gems, and the nWo version. I didn’t bother getting the version without gems. The Big Network has the standard version, and a version with Cena side plates. I got both, because my son is a member of the CeNation. The Raw and Smackdown Women’s Belts just have the backgrounds behind the W painted differently, but I had to have both. There are 3 different versions of the Intercontinental Title and 2 versions of the NXT Belt, which, of course, I had to have all of them. The United States and the Penny Tags have 2 versions each, only because of the logo change, but I had to have both versions of…both. The Raw and Smackdown Tags is just a strap color change, but, again, I had to have both.
Now here’s comes the part of my non-issue dilemma. I already had the version of Cruiserweight Belt that debuted at the Cruiserweight Classic (purple swoosh on only the main plate). I was standing at a Wal-Mart the other day, just staring at the newest version of the Cruiserweight Belt used on 205 Live (orange swoosh on all 3 plates). Being who I am, I didn’t hesitate to buy a second purple strap, but on the way to the Pat-Mobile, I thought to myself, “Although it was only $20, did I really have to buy it??” As you can probably tell I’d rather regret a purchase than to regret passing up on something. Looking back, I’m glad I got exactly what I wanted and I’m glad I skipped out on the ones I did skip out on, but this one is a little different. This was more of a case where I can either take the $20 and put it on black / red at a casino, or put it on purple at Wal-Mart. On a side note, Mattel better release a figure sized 205 Live version of the Cruiserweight Championship Title Belt with orange swoosh for my display.
So my rhetorical question is, when is enough enough?? When is too much, too much?? How do you feel about variants or variance, when it comes to just about anything??
Remember, this is coming from the same guy who has 2 Fandu Big Gold Belts (All Gold and Antique Gold) and I plan on getting 2 more Big Gold Belts (All Nickel and Dual Plated) sooner or later.
