Do you prefer the current version where Bryan is an annoying and condescending environmentalist, or do you prefer when Bryan was a sly and cowardly heel who yelled yes and no depending on the situation? Current Daniel Bryan's promo work is great and reminds me that he's just as good a heel as he was a face, but 2012 Daniel Bryan was him at his hottest time and when he was proving himself as a top talent. I think I'll say I like 2012 Daniel Bryan better.

Current heel Daniel Bryan.
The 2012 heel Daniel Bryan still had a catchphrase in yelling, "No!" So the fans would chant back "Yes!" or even at times chant "No!" thus reaction was still there for Bryan in a positive way.
Now though? No fans are chanting for Daniel Bryan. They boo him. They dislike him. This is the perfect heel Daniel Bryan that the WWE needs right now.

2012 heel Daniel Bryan was entertaining. 2019 heel Daniel Bryan is the most boring superstar on the roster.
So easily 2012 heel Daniel Bryan by miles. Wrestling is sports entertainment, and if you're not entertaining, you're doing it wrong.

Was 2012 heel Bryan even really a heel? Serious question, I remember it being more comedic and sympathetic.
He's getting proper, legit heat now. Pretty remarkable considering where he was just 12 months ago.

His current run is infinitely better, in that he's garnering actual heel heat, versus a 'cool heel' response.

I'm in the minority but I just don't like the condescending eco-warrior heel gimmick. It is gathering heat in a Bryan vs the fans way but it lends so little to actual feuds with other wrestlers. And I have yet to see how being champion allows Bryan to make any difference at all in his crusade. It comes off as empty cheap heat.

Sorry, Daniel Bryan hasn't been good as a heel, face, commissioner, etc.

I think this current gimmick is the second best of his WWE career. Nothing will ever top WM xXx Bryan, but he's wildly entertaining at the moment.

Kayfabe-wise being the champion allows you to have more attention shone on you and a bigger platform. More media interviews, more promo time, etc. More opportunities to push your agenda.

I'll always have a special place in my heart for the compost toilet episode.

Both are great, but current work is tremendous. Only Bryan can get over as both heel and face like gangbusters these days. Easily the best wrestler in the company. Which would make sense IF he was doing that stuff, or at least pretending to. He's not. It's empty fluff. Considering how beloved Bryan is and how dead WWE crowds are, I'm impressed he is able to get any heat, let alone how much he's been getting.

I agree, although he’s coming off self-righteous like Punk during SES except not as good.

Thing is, both Bret and Punk were able to bring it back around to meaningful reasons for feuding with other wrestlers while Bryan hasn't. "You drive a SUV! Fickle!" doesn't make for very good feud fodder.

To me, it is a mid to low level gimmick (hello CJ Parker) that is being expertly elevated by the talent of Bryan.

Definitely this run. I'm not sure he had a reason to be "bad" back then? But maybe I've repressed memories from that time.

Definitely this run. I'm not sure he had a reason to be "bad" back then? But maybe I've repressed memories from that time. It was very weird. Heel commentator Cole hated him. He cashed in on heel Henry (albeit moments after Big Show beat him), remained a heel. I think Vince couldn't buy him unless he was a heel who cheated for his wins.

I slightly prefer this current heel run because there’s substance to it. Rather than being a dick for the sake of being one there’s purpose and logical character choices made for him turning heel.

I don't know but this version has turned the fans against him. I never thought I would see the day when the crowd would boo him.
