Say if the Montreal Scewjob had been booked as a work (which it wasn't)-but say if WWE would've still done the Screwjob (but as a work), what would've happened with Bret after? I say we would've had Bret/ Vince feud before Vince/Austin. Bret would've faced Vince at WrestleMania 14 and beat Vince to a pulp. Then, Vince would move on to Austin after WrestleMania 14. From there, Bret still would've been at the top of the card throughout 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.

Screw job or no screw job, Bret Hart wouldn't have fit with the WWF in 1998.
Bret's best bet would have been to just retire in 1998. His WCW run is surely forgettable.

We just had a what if Bret stayed thread not so long ago. And honestly all that I will say for certain is if he stayed then Goldberg would have never caused a career ending injury to him. And then possibly Owen would still be alive today. As for his wrestling if he stayed and wasn’t injured I am fairly confident that he would have adapted his style to the changing times.

It was going to be Bret and Austin at WM14. Bret's 20 yr deal was 1.5 mil for first three years, 17 yrs low six figure. From what I understand he was likely going to have a backstage role after 1999. Maybe bevome commissioner that I can see happening,

Owen would have lived, that's for one thing. I think we'd get a Hart Foundation face run and then Bret would retire gracefully a few years later.

No Mr McMahon character!
But as HBKdaddycool said, Bret wouldn’t have fit in with the direction the WWF was going. Plus he was always going to lose the feud with Shawn and if he did put over Austin, he’d be lost in midcard obscurity and would have gone stale fast.
Part f me wishes there was no screw job and he retired around the time, dignity in tact. Was never his biggest fan, but hate to see the bitter person he’s become.
