That I know of Target employees are not allowed to purchase or even hold onto anything until they're off the clock. Not sure if they enforce that rule in all locations. As for Wal-Mart, it seems like employees can get away with just about anything.

I’m not saying I would actually do this...however IF I worked at Target or Walmart, I’d possibly hide the figures. I mean, what if Sherri happened to accidentally get stocked behind the Monster High dolls. Or what if Pete happened to get stocked along with the Peppa Pig toys. Then you could take a break and call a friend to pick it up. It’s not illegal.
I’m not saying I would, just saying this could be an effective method. Seriously all is fair in love and war. And these exclusives are war for sure!

For the Brits on here, I used to work at Smyths and I was allowed to reserve things for myself to buy at the end of the day. However, if a customer asked for it and the reserved figure was the only one left, it went to the customer. That never happened to me, but that was the rule.

I'll just add one more story which I've said before.
I was on the hunt for the Pikachu Pop. Some stored had released it early. Others were waiting for the right time.
I stopped at one the day before rihht before closing. I asked a guy of they had it and it showed in the system. I saw the quantity. It was there He claimed no real street date so he went to get it. He comes back and as he's taking it out a senior employee tells him he can't sell that yet. So back in the box it went.
Next day I get there right as store opens. 4 people there. We go to the area no Pikachu. A guy ask the same guy who stopped me from getting it before. He said they never received the shipment.
I saw the shipment. I saw the quantity. Next day it was 0. Someone got to it. It could not have been misplaced because the system had a for quantity.
That means either someone stole it and the system was updated instantaenously (unlikely) or someone from staff bought them before they went on sale.

I'm a manager for a major US retail company, not Target or Walmart. I can't speak to their policies, but I can share mine.
I personally collect a number of things including TMNT, MMPR, WWE, NECA horror, Godzilla, etc. Some of my team also collect, albeit much more focused or selectively than others. My policy when new products come in is that my team has first shot at new products. If we receive a shipment and it's contents are not pre-ordered by another customer, it's open season. This is especially helpful to my guys who like the Pops, so chases and exclusives aren't such a pain. In our company's case, this isn't necessarily policy so much as it's at the discrepancy of each store manager.
Having said this however, our location also has a reputation as one of the hardest working for our guests. We consistently score the highest in our region in customer satisfaction surveys. We will bust our asses to track down products for our customers, regulars or not. As a collector of over 25 years, I can relate to those having difficulty finding those all-important must-haves.

Even if it is policy it's more than likely not enforced. More important things to worry about day to day and plus the retailer still gets their money.

I used to work at my local Target and our stores rule was as long as the product was physically put on the peg on the planogram then it was fair game to anyone and we stocked new products on the shelf at 4am with the store opening at 8am

I used to work retail in high school, college, and just out of college and I don’t remember anything that would’ve stopped me from swiping up any such merchandise

I think most of the time it's not employees taking the sought after figures, but other collectors or scalpers. Most retail workers dont give a crap about figures, they just want to get paid and go home.

Most retail workers dont give a crap about figures, they just want to get paid and go home. It would only take 1 ambitious employee per store of the 50-100 employees. (And of course not every store would have such an individual)

I feel like the law of parsimony still lends itself to the greater likelihood that any nefarious gathering of sought after product is just a matter of person A getting there before person B, the personal disconnect between collectors leading to a perception of geographical isolation, and the application of some form of injustice as a coping mechanism for not being able to attain what one is after. That was so classy I need to put on a second monocle. That's the nicest thing anyone's ever said about me on this board.

Retail is a crapty job. Gotta have some perks. Exactly! What I don't see didn't hurt me. Eg, of they are buying up all the store stock, I don't see it happening, so I don't care

I worked exactly one shift at KB Toys in the fall of 2000 and while in the back noticed a case of the (then impossible to find) Rulers of the Ring series 2 figures sitting open on a shelf. Jackpot. I bought the figures at the end of my shift and quit the next day.
I hated retail. KB was about to enslave me, an 18 year old high school senior, for nearly 40 hours a week. I got what I wanted and bounced :-)

When I had my 9 year stint at Walmart I would often get the early shift and before I clocked in, I always checked the toy dept. I used to get a lot of Hot Wheels, Matchbox cars that way, a good majority of my figures were purchased there. I have never bought anything with the intention of flipping it. I could have but I chose not too.

Unless its changed in the last 10 years, no they dont. I spent a few years at Target during the McFarlane sports picks boom. I bought tons. Anything we wanted we just kept in the back until the store opened. They didnt need to hit the floor first or any sort of limit.

I work in retail albeit a different line and when we get stock in if a worker wants to buy it I let them. With kpi’s to meet, a sale is a sale.

Some of you fail to realize that their are dudes that take notice of shipment days and will literally stalk the store and the employees still crap is put out on shelves.
I see it all the time with funko weirdos.
