This year I decided to stop sitting on my ass. I've started going to the gym and now I am curious about the benefits of a pre and/or post workout drink. How many of you guys and gals attend the gym regularly and if so, do you utilize pre or post workout drinks? Why or why not and if so which supplement do you recommend?

I'll reply to this post because someone on the other post may say something completely different but for me, the powders or any protein bars are complete trash. I don't know what the guys are taking at gold's gym (they always seem to be downing some drink) but I purchased several hundred dollars of powders and each one was money wasted. I don't know how long you're supposed to use this stuff before it takes effect and builds crazy muscles but to me it just seems like a gimmick to make me buy more and when it isn't working in a timely manner, I'm done!

I work for a company that manufactures these types of supplements for custom formulas for other companies. There's hundreds of options. I've never used pre workout before but the only protein powder brands I've used are Body Fortress Whey Protein Powder and Muscle Milk. I didn't really like the whey protein but I think chocolate muscle milk tastes really good. I don't go to the gym but I have weights at home and just recently started working out again after months of not doing it. I also a small heavy bag I'd really love to set up but given my current living situation I'm not sure the best way to go about it.

I’ve used a lot of preworkout powders over the last 7 years. bottom line is I don’t suggest them for a few reasons. firstly, your energy should come naturally imo and not be reliant on a chemical(s). a banana before a workout is all the preworkout you need.
secondly, a lot of preworkouts contain stimulants which cause constricted blood flow which is NOT optimal for working out and arguably is stressful on your heart.
as for protein shakes/post workout shakes, just like anything if you’re relying on something that comes packaged and full of artificial flavours, it’s simply not going to be as beneficial as real food nutrition. after years of using different varieties, I’ve found this to be a really great protein shake:
- hemp protein (I use Progressive Organic’s) - almond milk - oats - honey - real peanut butter
that recipe gives you your protein, complex carbs, sugar for glucose recovery, good quality fats, and a good amount of calories to restore yourself and build muscle. hemp is really bio available, which essentially means it is really great at giving you a whack of nutrition since it’s absorbed readily, and all that fiber from it will keep you regular enough to keep the food intake up.
