Have to laugh at the people on Twitter. Some of them wondering how this is best for AJ's family.
1) For those thinking he should go back to Japan: Why uproot his family? Why be separated from his family? Being in an American based company allows him to keep his family put, and allows him to visit whenever he pleases. With rumors that the contract was for a reduced schedule, he'll get to do just that. Won't have to fly from Japan to see his family. He can fly from Topeka and see his family the same day.
2) For those thinking he would go to AEW: Why would he want to go back to square 1? He spent a sizable portion of his career trying to create something from nothing. And everytime that company seemed viable, a stupid management move would push it all back. Styles does not have to prove that he can help grow a company. He did that with ROH. He did that with TNA. Been there. Done that. Move on. Also doesn't have to take a pay cut by sticking with WWE.
I expected AJ to re-sign with WWE. This was the biggest no brainer since there were questions circulating about where Kenny Omega would sign. Does he sign with a company he isn't too fond of that would make him change his style? Or does he sign with a company being founded by his buddies that will also allow him to wrestle the style he likes? Decisions decisions.
