Just wanted to post about the fire that broke out in Notre Dame today. Awful to see the damage that it caused. Know all the history that was lost, and thinking all that it survived only to be destroyed by a fire, possibly caused during renovations of the building. While the last I heard, it wasn't completely destroyed, obviously a good chunk of it was, but at least there doesn't appear to be any deaths or injuries.

It’s so aweful when these things happen A church burned down two towns over from me last year and it was over 150 years old. It still makes me sad when I drive by because it was freaking cool looking and just belonged there and now being in that area is just not the same. I feel very bad for the city of Paris that this has happened. If I had visited Notre Dame before then I would probably cry a little over this I live in a historic area in New England and many churches in the past have burned down. Some have since been rebuilt. I think fire will eventually be the death of all them at some point hopefully holding off for still a very very long time.

They were able to get most of the artwork and historical artifacts out so at least some good came from this. And the building wasn't a total loss so I think they'll be able to repair it.
I was reading about it earlier today, construction began in 1163 and took 300 years to complete. That's an impressive feat and makes this even more tragic.

As someone who has spent years, and thousands of dollars on trying to better myself and my knowledge of history, seeing this hurt me really bad in my soul. I'm not really religious, agnostic but raised Catholic. But you don't have to be religious to feel the pain of a world treasure literally up in flames.
That'd be like if a meteor crashed and took out the Great Wall, or an earthquake took out the Statue of Liberty, or one of those freak storms toppled the Great Pyramids. Some things just transcend what they originally stood for and just have meaning to humanity. The things that will still be around after humanity is gone, whether it's extinction or evacuating Earth some day.
