Anyone care about the Kentucky Derby outside of KY or the surrounding area? I’m from Louisville and was never really in to it outside the excuse to party the first Saturday of May. I’ve recently found an affection for it after moving away from my hometown. Just curious how others feel about the fastest two minutes in sports.

Nah. Maybe if I was there? But watching horses on TV is as bad as watching poker on TV.

This is more for the sports board but it’s a current event so I’ll let this go.

I thought this was about the football club - I was about to launch into a detailed analysis of their current position in the Championship play-off positions with a few minutes of their last game left to go, consider their chances up against Leeds in the play-offs themselves, and their chances if they do make it into the Premier League next season. But the Kentucky Derby I know nothing about

My grandfather lived in NJ most of his life. The Kentucky Derby was his WrestleMania.

I always check out the triple crown in the states and look forward to the Breeders Cup later in the year. Aidan O'Brien will win that Kentucky Derby some day, hes an unbelievable trainer. The US need to get away from those dirt tracks and embrace turf, its much easier on the horses. The best horse racing is in the UK and Ireland simply because of their different courses with various undulations and contours. I do prefer jump racing (national hunt)compared to the flat though. I watched one of the first foals of American Pharoah win at Leopardstown down the south, "Monarch of Egypt" win his first race, he looks to be justifying his massive price tag Coolmore paid for him, i think it was some crazy amount in the millions! Anyway, yes I do love horse racing. Ill be watching some replays tonight. I love studying the form at nights with a few cups of tea, cant beat it!

I feel the need to amend my previous response.
I am greatly intrigued by the astronomical amount of white privlege involved in throwing a tantrum and protesting a horse race because a horse "interferred" with another horse. I am entertained.

I would have put a thread up in the Sports Hub, but I don't think there are too many pony fans on here. I've always watched the Triple Crown races. I don't bet on them or anything, and it's odd because I'm not a huge fan of horses, but I can appreciate the races. I hate the jockeys who overly abuse the whip though. I used to watch horse racing every Tuesday night with my old neighbor. He was in his 90s, but he and his wife loved every sport and always watched. And Tuesday's (I think) is when Morgantown does their weekly races. I was just a young teen at the time, but Mr. George used to have like, full spreads for each horse, who was riding them, weather predictions throughout the night, you'd think he was gambling on them but it was just a game to him. So we made a little game out of it, he'd make his picks based off of legit statistics, and I'd usually just pick by the name of the horse unless I recognized the jockey. I won so much more than him. He did the same for football too with spreads and stuff, and I'd just pick with my gut. And every birthday and Christmas I'd get a card with a few bucks in it saying this is what he owed me for losing to me in the horses and football. It's something I'll never forget. But back on topic, I like the Derby but hate overactive jockeys. Having watched so much regular, who cares racing with him on Tuesday's, I'd see no name jockeys who rarely, if ever, whipped the rumps of the horses. Then I watch the Derby and it's like I'm watching the Holy Thursday rendition of the whipping of Jesus, but with horses. I hate that part of it. The Derby has been a mess the last couple of years though. And if the Derby is ok, the Preakness is a mess. They can't seem to find good weather anymore. Then you had the disqualification on top of the slosh fest that was the Derby's track this year...certainly one to forget. Or remember forever. Haven't decided yet.
