I have transferred over the original (18. Hulk Hogan joins WWF in 1998) to Hulkster2001's anthology series to take over the story (click here) 18. WCW Returns 2001
I haven't decided how long this is going to be or even if this deserves a separate thread, but wanted to give it a shot and hope to get input from my readers. What if WCW Returned in 2001, but is still owned by the WWF as a separate brand? So here we go...

WCW Returns - Saturday Night WCW - May 2001
On March 23rd 2001, Vince McMahon purchases WCW for $3 Million with its archive and several contracts. Vince announced the purchase on the March 26th edition of RAW, which was also the date of the last WCW Nitro episode. It's well known that the WWF intended to keep WCW running as a subsidiary (even polls were put up on WWF.com) with the hope that TNN would pick it up. The plan fell through and networks refused to take it on. This changed the WWF, too many members on the roster, too many issues in the back leading to Steve Austin's walk out the following year (it was part of his frustration). The Attitude Era also peaked at Wrestlemania 17 because of the purchase. WWF was still interested in WCW as a product even testing out a July episode of RAW with the final twenty minutes reserved for WCW. Unfortunately without network interest, WCW had to live on through the WWF that would eventually lead to the 2002 Brand Split. What if a network picked up WCW programming? Could we have seen major WCW/ECW stars in the past return to the WCW (eventually) just as some did later in the WWF? Could we have seen "REAL" competition between these distinct "brands" instead of the so-called RAW vs. Smackdown brands? Would the Attitude Era properly continue on in the WWF without WCW/ECW stars? In this diary, FOX (which originally saw some interest in late 2000) decides to pick up WCW on Saturday Night. And so rather than have a full-scale "InVasion" storyline in the WWF, WCW is making a return on TV for May, and the WWF hype it up each weak after WM17. Shane McMahon becomes legit head of WCW and brings out Booker T as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion in early April to RAW, promoting him as a major WCW superstar along with Diamond Dallas Page. A few WCW stars get match spots on RAW and Smackdown for exposure to keep the idea of a "WWF vs. WCW" prospect alive for a future date. Some stars like Buff Bagwell are allowed to stay (he was originally let go for his performance in a RAW match, here that match doesn't happen), while others like Jeff Jarrett would obviously not continue. This is the story of the return of WCW on TV, but owned by the WWF. To add more to the roster, Paul Heyman and some ECW stars join WCW programming resulting in the total purchase of ECW by the WWF in June. Crossovers are bound to happen between the WWF and WCW to keep WCW interesting. Head of WCW: Shane McMahon

Buff acted like Flair the whole time, strutting and even shouts of Woooo! He flashed his new fancy robe around at the beginning of the match. After the match Arn Anderson walks out. Arn: Listen to me Buff Bagwell, listen to me very careful. You may have won that robe at the Nature Boy Battle Royal I'll give you that, but what you did to the real Nature Boy, the one and only Nature Boy, Ric Flair last week was a disgrace. You don't really deserve to carry around that robe any longer. So boy, I say you give it back. Bagwell laughs and attacks Arn! He locks in the figure-four till WCW officials run out to break it! Buff spits on Arn and stomps him as he grabs the robe and leaves with it flashing it for the camera and shouting "Woooo!" Backstage segment - Shane arrives with Stacy Kiebler as his new executive assistant. In his office after a commercial break, Shane says he wants a Women's Division in the WCW and needs new talent because he really enjoyed last week's Bras and Panties match and WCW needs more content like that. Steiner takes off his glasses and doesn't say a work as Booker T is in disbelief. Steiner makes his way out to the ring. Steiner: This goes to all my freaks in Atlanta Big Poppa Pump is your hook up Holla! You can't have a WCW show without me! So I'm out here for one reason only, and that's to call Shane McMahon out. Shane: (is out in the ring with Stacy Kiebler) Look Scott Steiner, I invited you to come and have a meeting in me, not interupt this program. Steiner: Let me tell you something Shane-O-Mac, you need to give me a reason why I should sign with WCW over the WWF. Shane: Hold on just a minute, first of all Scott, you know my father wouldn't have your best interests to heart, I know the WWF has the money, they can throw dollar signs at you but remember this, Vince McMahon would bury you because he knows you're a WCW guy. Steiner: Fair enough, you made a good point, but Big Poppa Pump needs more convincing because there is no way you can match the offer Vince McMahon made me... Shane: Alright how about if you sign with WCW, I may not be able to match Vince right now, but I'll not only give you a big money guaranteed contract, I'll give you a shot next week on WCW Saturday Night for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Steiner: Now that sounds more like it, but you see the thing is there is one more thing I want... Shane: What is it? Steiner: You know I'm kinda surprised the only reason you called me here was because you found out Vince wanted me to come to the WWF. You never once asked me if I wanted to be part of the WCW. Probably because I cost too much for you to handle. Know this Big Poppa Pump is the WCW boy so let me tell you something, I'll sign but only after this... Shane is startled and rushes out in the hallways with Torrie behind him only to find Stacy with a cup of coffee and some asprin. Stacy stares at Torrie and wonders why she was with him. Shane thanks Torrie and asks Stacy if she was with Steiner, and she denies it. Torrie laughs and leaves. The Natural Born Thrillers (c) def. Shane: Paul, Paul Heyman get in the ring (Heyman enters). Look when we both made a deal to merge WCW and ECW for our show, I made it clear this was going to be a WCW show, not an ECW show. I've been fair and impartial to your ECW stars. But last week when you interupted broadcast for your ridiculous rant, you had no right to do that. No right to threaten me "dammit" I'm Shane McMahon! Paul: (laughs) You sound like a lot like Vince. Shane: Don't you dare say that dammit I'm nothing like my father! Look Heyman you're lucky I don't fire you because I gave you a share in my company, but you know that I could you know I could make it even worse for your ECW guys. The fact is I'm the one paying them, I'm the one giving them their matches so just remember as the Rock says, no your roll and shut your mouth. Heyman shakes his head and leaves for the commentary desk. Shane: Now that I've made my self clear, you have all successfully voted for the dream Crossover match, and it's settled on July 17th, WCW's own Booker T the former WCW World Champion will be taking on the World Wrestling Federation champion, Stone Cold Steve Austin!
