12. Ric Flair joins the WWF in 1998Back in 1998, Ric Flair had no-showed a WCW Thunder episode (he claimed to have requested time off) and the WCW sued him for it. Flair wanted out of his WCW agreement (Flair didn't have a contract, but had signed a letter of intent with WCW). After around five months of the lawsuit (Flair had spent so much on) Flair finally returned to WCW and became an embarrassment (when he was actually still a draw in '98 in his feud with Bret) when Eric Bischoff who filed the suit to begin with would go on to defeat the great Ric Flair at Starrcade 98. If Flair had won the lawsuit, Vince McMahon was ready to bring him on board. Vince even had an interview in which he heavily praised Ric Flair (though unfortunately Triple H and Taker had trashed him for being old which angered Flair). In this scenario, Flair won his law suit and Vince brings him in in a surprise appearance on RAW...

WWF RAW is WAR September 14th, 1998 Hosts: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler
RAW opens with Austin, Taker, Kane and Vince McMahon all in the ring. Vince cuts a promo talking about the triple threat match at Breakdown but it's going to be technically a handicap match where Taker and Kane can't pin each other, but one has to pin Austin. Vince even threatens Austin that if he hurts Vince the Brothers will attack him. As this is happening in the crowd the fans are all on their feet wondering who in the world is coming down the steps and many start to take notice. JR notices that it's Ric Flair! JR: What in the world is he doing here! Lawler: Ahhh! JR! JR: He has no business being here! Lawler: What if bought a ticket? Maybe he wants to watch what we do. JR: Maybe As Vince is talking trash he now notices Ric Flair who takes a seat in the front. Vince: Hey wait just a minute here wait just a minute (laughs) are you kidding me? Is this some kind of joke. Hey it's the Nature Boy, it's Ric Flair. What business do you have being down there? Some in the crowd shout "Wooo!" Vince: Let's all turn our attention to the ring shall we... Suddenly Austin attacks Vince! But the Brothers of Destruction assault Austin in return. As they continue the assault, Ric Flair has had enough and jumps over the railings as the fans are going wild! Flair gets in the ring and start landing chops and punches on both Taker and Kane. Austin starts fighting back on Taker and Kane till WWF Security come out. Vince demands that Ric Flair be taken away on the outside. Austin hits the ropes and jumps on top of Vince as Flair is taken away. Flair laughs up the aisle. Backstage Flair is taken by cops. Vince approaches Flair and tells him off. Flair says he had a VIP ticket he bought and had every right to be here. Vince shouts at Flair saying that he had no business jumping over the railings which is a no no. Vince tells the cops to arrest him and take him away which they do. Highlights are later shown on RAW.

WWF RAW is WAR September 21st, 1998 Hosts: Jim Ross and Jerry LawlerVince opens RAW with Taker and Kane. Vince talks about the Rock (who turned babyface) and Mankind who interrupted Kane's match last week against the Rock, and mentions Austin and the Breakdown PPV. Vince: Now before I continue about Austin, last week we saw a certain Ric Flair, a former WWF Champion buy a ticket and got his a$$ hauled to prison because he couldn't stay in the audience where well quite frankly it's where he belongs. I think we all know that Ric Flair doesn't belong in a WWF ring, not anymore. He had the audicity to come into my ring, and assault the Undertaker and Kane. How dare he? Who does he think he is dammit? I'm Vince McMahon! I'm the owner of the WWF, and Ric Flair... Flair is then seen in the crowd again as the camera pans to him. JR is wondering what he's doing out here again. Vince: Wait what the hell is he doing out here again. Someone kick him out. Flair starts arguing with security showing his VIP frontrow ticket. Vince: Dammit what's taking so long (leaves the ring and heads towards Flair). What is going on here so you bought a ticket, I just don't care Flair you need to go back to where to came from dammit. Flair: (grabs Vince's mic) Woooo! Hey Vinnie Mac I paid for it and it's only fair that I get to watch and enjoy your program. Vince: Why? Why do you want to watch? Flair: I'm impressed with what you've done with the WWF so far. Vince: (smiles) You are? Well then you know what if you promise not to cause any problems I'll let you watch my show now where was I (gets in the ring)... Vince continues about Breakdown PPV as Flair sits down and watches the rest of the show. During the Tag match with Austin & Billy Gunn vs. the Brothers of Destruction, Austin made his way out and looked at Flair. They exchanged a few words which were negligible and Flair sat down smiling and clapping his hands. At the end of the show the Rock, Shamrock and Mankind were in the ring for a triple threat and Mankind was thrown by Shamrock over to where Flair was sitting. Flair got up and Shamrock started shouting at Flair. Flair starts taking off his blazer. The fans move back and get excited, but Shamrock ignores Flair and security stop Flair from getting involved as he helps Mankind up and he goes back over. The Brothers of Destruction come out and beat down on all three guys. RAW ends with Taker and Kane staring at Flair who stands. Flair points his finger at them talks trash as Taker shakes his.

Kevin Kelly approaches Flair. Kelly: Many of us here in the WWF have been speculating about your intentions for being out here tonight, are you here to enjoy the show? Flair: I got no problems with you or the WWF, in fact I'm here as a fan, an observer and with my lovely ladies here Woooo! I just want to enjoy the show like the rest of these fine fans out here. Later in the PPV Flair is gone with his ladies and JR wonders if he just couldn't handle watching the WWF. Lawler thinks something is up. Later a camera follows Flair with his ladies as a limo pulls up. The limo opens and someone calls for Flair to come in and Flair says he's all excited about the "deal of the century". JR and Lawler are completely puzzled. The Undertaker & Kane def. Stone Cold Steve Austin (c) via pinfall for the WWF Championship. Status of the WWF title to be Determined. WWF RAW is WAR September 28th, 1998 Hosts: JR & Lawler
Vince McMahon has the WWF Championship with him and gets in the ring. Vince talks about last night and how Austin finally lost the WWF title and unfortunately there is no current WWF Champion. Early Sprach plays and it's the Nature Boy who walks out with several ladies. Flair gets in the ring. Vince: (laughs) I'm a little surprised you got a backstage pass, not sure how, but I want to know how do you like the World Wrestling Federation so far? Flair: Woooo! I'm liking it so much that I just signed a multi-year deal baby Wooo! (struts) Vince: What the hell are you talking about? Flair: Woooo! The Nature Boy! This jet-flying, rolex-wearing, limousine driving, kiss-stealing son of a gun is now a new member of the World Wrestling Federation! Vince: What? (laughs) I think you must be mistaken... Flair: Last night I signed it on the dot thanks to your son Shane McMahon who made the offer to me Wooooo! Vince: I'm definitely going to have a talk with Shane about this, but if this is true, well Flair the thing is, I don't think anyone out here really wants you here and since I'm the owner of the WWF... Flair: There is one thing I want Vince, like all those year ago baby when I won the WWF Championship at the Royal Rumble Woooo the greatest Royal Rumble there ever was baby, I want it again, I want that WWF title! Vince: (laughs) O come on now Flair, you have to admit you're a little you know... past your prime I'm sure I mean I know you can compete but probably not like you used to all those years ago when you won the title to begin with, but Flair this is the WWF, this is WWF Attitude... Flair: You want to talk about Attitude you of all people know Vince that I got it and if you don't like it learn to love it Woooo! Vince: Alright while I want nothing more than to hand this Championship to anyone except Austin, though I honestly don't think you should be champion either but I'll give you a chance tonight, that's right once in a life time opportunity for you Ric. Consider this your only chance at the title. Since last night we couldn't determine who really won, tonight you'll be facing the Undertaker and Kane in a Triple Threat match for the vacant World Heavyweight title. Backstage Stone Cold Steve Austin arrives and meets with Flair. Flair says he's got no issue with Austin and likes him, but tonight he wants the title. Austin says that if Flair wins he wants a title shot. Flair says he'll give it to Austin in a heartbeat. Backstage segment has Vince McMahon hearing about what Flair said to Austin. Vince gets angry and says that Taker and Kane better beat him. Ric Flair vs. The Undertaker & Kane in a Triple Threat Match for the Vacant WWF Championship.
Flair is out with his valets as Taker and Kane wait in the ring. Taker and Kane decide to team up first. They go after Flair, but Flair does more of a goose chase, he runs to the outside and has Kane follow him. He goes back in the ring and Taker tries to go after him but Flair lands a lowblow. JR says that Flair is the dirtiest player in Sports Entertainment. Kane gets in and bumps into Taker, Taker and Kane go at it as Flair waits on the outside! Flair goes on commentary. JR: Don't you have a match? Flair: Woooo! Look at those two big men, do you know how to take two big men down? Lawler: How? Flair: Just watch me! Taker goes for the old school and on the outside Flair drops Taker to the outside! Flair starts choking Taker out. Kane goes after Flair, Flair drops Taker and runs into the ring. Kane climbs the apron as Flair hits the ropes and lands a high kick as Kane falls. Kane and Taker go at it again on the outside till Kane smashes Taker over the ringpost and he falls. Flair sits on top of a corner waiting for Kane and laughs. Kane gets back in and Flair starts chopping him several times and goes for the figure four and locks it in! It looks like Kane is struggling till Vince McMahon runs out. He wants to stop the match till Austin runs out! Austin jumps Vince's back! He starts fighting Taker on the outside who was ready to get back in! Kane gets in the rope break and is up. Kane starts going after Flair, till he misses a clothesline, Flair swipes Kane's legs and grabs them like he did with Vader at Starrcade 93 gets in the pin and WIN! Winner: Ric Flair via pinfall to become the NEW WWF ChampionVince on the outside is furious as Austin grabs the WWF Championship belt and presents it to Flair as Flair celebrates with Austin. WWF RAW is WAR October 5th, 1998 Hosts: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler
Vince McMahon opens RAW with Taker and Kane and gets in the ring. Vince: Dammit last week Ric Flair won the WWF Championship all thanks to that good for nothing Stone Cold Steve Austin. Well Stone Cold thinks that he's going to get a shot at the championship against Ric Flair which was promised to him by Flair, but guess what Austin that isn't going to happen. That's right I'm not going to let it happen because I've already set up a match with Flair who will take on Ken Shamrock for the WWF Championship. And when Ken Shamrock wins the title tonight, it'll be a lot more difficult for you Austin to win back the strap. Vince starts leaving till Austin suddenly comes out with a Zamboni, nearly running over Vince with it who hurts his leg and Austin jumps on Taker and Kane, beating them down for getting screwed out of a title shot. We learn that Vince has sustained a leg injury and he is taken into the ambulance on a stretcher till Austin shows up again and starts beating down on Vince! Finally WWF Officials arrive and they allow Vince to go back into the ambulance. Backstage Mankind meets with Flair who arrives to the building in a limo and congratulates him on winning the title. Mankind says Flair was a hero of his growing up. Ric Flair (c) vs. Ken Shamrock for the WWF ChampionshipShamrock is more of a tweener now as he starts working on Flair's legs and arm early on. Flair reverses an armhold, but Shamrock gets in a belly-to-belly for the pin to two. Flair reverses and irish whip and flips Shamrock over. Flair starts kicking Shamrocks legs. Later Shamrock gets in a powerslam, Flair his in a corner as Shamrock rams the corner when Flair gets out of the way. Flair dropkicks Shamrock as he falls. Shamrock is up as Flair hits the ropes, struts and rakes Shamrock's eyes for the roll up and win. Winner: Ric Flair via pinfall to retain the WWF ChampionshipShamrock snaps and goes nuts he starts attacking Flair viciously and grabs in the ankle lock. Shamrock just won't let go at all. Flair is unconscious and it looks like the ankle snaps as Shamrock get's a lot of heat. WWF Officials try to stop him till Austin makes his way out and lands a big stunner on Shamrock to break the hold. Flair is taken out on a stretcher and into an ambulance.

WWF RAW is WAR October 12th, 1998 Hosts: Jim Ross & Jerry Lawler
The Stooges are controlling RAW and they have the WWF Championship belt with them. They announced that Ric Flair has sustained an ankle injury (thanks to Shamrock) and therefore has been stripped of the WWF title. They mention that this Sunday the Undertaker will face Kane for the WWF Championship and Stone Cold will be the special guest referee to prove if he can be in line with Vince or not. And if Austin doesn't officiate correctly, Austin will be fired! Vince McMahon is in the hospital recovering from his leg injury from last week. Vince is annoyed and shouts at the nurse for not getting him what he wants. Soon another patient arrives and...it's Ric Flair! Vince: O noo....not him...no no no...nurse can I get another room dammit I can afford one... The nurse tells Vince they're packed and all rooms are full. Flair: O hey Vince (laughs) Later Vince is on the phone and hangs up. Vince: (smirk) Well Flair I've got to say you did fairly well for a guy of your age but I'm sure you know by now that you've been stripped out of the WWF Championship because of your ankle injury. This is the best news all week. Now we can finally have a real champion, the Undertaker or Kane. Flair: I can live with that for now Vince Woooo! What do they have me on I feel great.... Later at the hospital, a clown shows up for Flair with cards, balloons and gifts. Thereafter Mankind shows up with presents for Flair and a big card from all WWF stars. Vince doesn't like that the presents and cards are for Flair. Mankind gives at least one present from himself to Vince. Vince: Well thanks I guess, Dammit Flair why do you keep getting stuff. This is ridiculous, well at least my good friends will send me stuff...I hope... Later at the hospital a doctor shows up and it's not a doctor...it's Austin! Vince screams as Austin beats the living hell out of Vince as Flair is in the back laughing his head off.

WWF RAW is WAR November 9th, 1998 Hosts: Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler
Recap in October-November: Judgment Day saw Kane in a match with the Undertaker that ended in No Contest as Austin gets fired. The next night, Austin famously holds Vince hostage and uses a toy gun to threaten Vince (where Vince ends up urinating in his pants). The following week Austin reveals that Shane gave him a five-year deal with a guaranteed title match. Thereafter a tournament is setup for the WWF title and they're promoting that Ric Flair is set for an in-ring return to the Survivor Series: Deadly Game tournament. Ric Flair makes his way out after a long absence due to the ankle injury caused by Shamrock. Flair: Woooo! I'm glad to be back. I want to thank each and everyone of you for supporting me in my recovery. I think the worst moment was being in the same room as Vince McMahon, but it was also entertaining. I'm out here because at Deadly Game this Sunday, I'm set to face Ken Shamrock in the first round. Shamrock, you're a menace to society, and at Deadly Game... Shamrock comes out. Shamrock: Hey look Ric Flair! You deserved what came to you. You came to the WWF, you came to our ring, I only did what I was told. Flair: What are you talking about? Shamrock: What did you think I would risk my career by injuring you? Ha, you already know who put me up to it and this Sunday I'll do it again and end your career once and for all. Flair: We'll see about that. Shamrock belly-to-belly suplexes Flair! He tries to go for the ankle lock, but Flair rolls to the outside in time and leaves. Shamrock snaps in the ring and shouts

WWF RAW is WAR January 4th, 1999 Hosts: Michael Cole & Jerry Lawler
RECAP: November-December On November 23rd, 1998 RAW, we learn that when Shane signed Ric Flair to a WWF contract, he gave him the promise of the WWF Commissioner job after it became available. Ric Flair takes the job when Sgt. Slaughter quits and becomes the new WWF Commissioner. Flair doesn't act as a member of the Corporation or as one of Vince's Stooges, but plays a minor role booking some shows. WWF Commissioner Ric Flair comes out and declares that Mankind will have a title shot tonight against the WWF Champion the Rock. Flair calls out Stone Cold. Flair: Stone Cold Steve Austin, at Rock Bottom you got your chance to enter the Royal Rumble. But Austin, I've been wanting something since Survivor Series. Austin: As you know I respect everything you've done in the industry Ric, but I'm sick and tired of seeing you in a damn suit and tie and you know how well I do with authority figures. Flair: You're right, you're right Austin, but I wanted to ask you when you and I stepped in the ring at Survivor Series, it was electrifying baby. We never resolved the match, one on one, a legend and a stone cold beer drinking sob, no interference, so Austin, I'm asking you man to man, Woooo! You know it the whole world knows it to be the man Wooooo! You got to beat the man. So whad'ya say you and I in the ring at the Royal Rumble. Austin: Not only will I win the Royal Rumble, but I'll be happy to whip your a$$ corner to corner because that's the bottom line. Vince: (on stage with the Corporation) There you go, Ric Flair's ambition once again to be at the top of the mountain. So let's make it happen Flair, I'll make it a dream just for you, because I'll do anything to make sure Austin doesn't win the Royal Rumble and to do so I'll give you your match, only...only...if you quit right now as Commissioner. Flair: You want me quit?! (takes off his shirt) You want me the Nature Boy to quit! Woooo! (hits the ropes, struts and lands an elbow on his shirt!) Woooo! I quit as WWF Commissioner then! Vince: (laughs) Great because tonight you'll be in a tag match with Austin to take on....well Brisco and Patterson after you hurt my son last week, you're both going to be facing Austin and Flair (they start arguing they don't want too)... Austin: It seems like you're rewarding Flair and I with those two Stooges so let them come in right now so we can whoop their a$$es. Vince: Fair enough. (King shouts what!) Stone Cold Steve Austin & Ric Flair vs. Brisco & PattersonIn the ring Flair and Bisco are in. Brisco tries to brine Flair, Flair shouts he has all the money in the world, but all Brisco has is a condom and a cig. Flair slaps Brisco and clotheslines him. Flair starts landing punches in a corner and whips him to a corner hard. Flair makes the tag and Austin is on fire stomping Brisco so much that he drags himself and makes the tag to Pat. Pat refuses to go in and starts to leave. Flair runs out and headbutts Pat, throwing him in the ring for Austin to stun him. Austin tags Flair and Flair gets in the figure-four for the submission win. Winner: Stone Cold & Flair via submissionLater in the night, Mankind wins the WWF Championship with the help of Austin.

WWF RAW is WAR February 13th, 1999 (Feb 8 taping) Skydome, Toronto Hosts: Cole & Lawler
Last week on RAW, Flair was not on RAW and Vince was in Texas trying to provoke Austin. Vince told Austin that he had a surprise opponent for him for St. Valentine's Day Massacre. Austin comes out to a huge pop he says he doesn't want to wait for this so called mystery opponent but Austin doesn't care he just wants to whoop some a$$ and fast forward to Wrestlemania and win back the WWF title. Vince later comes out talking trash about Austin and then opens a challenge on Ric Flair to a match because he hates him so much. Flair: (comes out on stage to a massive pop from the Toronto crowd) Wooooo! So you want a match eh Vinnie Mac, you got your match. Vince: Not so fast Flair, because of how I'm sick and tired of you ever since my son Shane mistakenly gave you a contract thinking somehow that was a good idea, in fact dammit tonight you're up against Shane because it's time I punish him for bringing someone like you in to the WWF. Flair: I'm going to be more than happy to beat up your son, but to throw your son like that in the ring...you make me sick Vince... Vince: Dammit it I'm Vince McMahon and Ric Flair at St. Valentine's Day Massacre, it's going to be a First Blood Match. And after I'm done with you, the world will finally know who is better Vince McMahon or the Nature Boy. WWF RAW is WAR March 15th, 1999 Hosts: Cole & Lawler
RECAP: Feb 22nd, RAW - Ric Flair arrives to the arena in a limo later in the show with a few ladies. Flair walks till suddenly a rain of blood falls from the ceiling all over Flair!
March 1st, RAW - Vince talks to Flair backstage about a truce with each other because he's worried about the Ministry especially after the teddy bear that was put on fire last week. Flair says that he isn't worried about the Ministry and says that Vince shouldn't have too because this is all just nonsense.
March 8th, RAW - Taker demands he wants his match with Ric Flair which Vince has been refusing to offer because Vince is believing in this darkness stuff as being real.
Ric Flair makes his return and gets in the ring. He says that all this Ministry stuff is nonsense and isn't a believer. Taker gets on stage and says that Flair is an unbeliever who will be sacrificed. He challenges Flair to a Hell in a Cell match for the sacrifice at Wrestlemania. Flair says that he accepts even though Vince didn't want him too. Taker looks to the heavens as a dummy of Ric Flair in a noose drops down from the rafters hanging! Flair looks in shock as a $50,000 Nature Boy robe falls down into the ring.

Vince: Look you and I may not see eye to eye but consider my offer, this is my only offer that stands... Flair: What offer? Vince: I'm offering you a chance to be part of the Corporation. Join us, we can use you. Flair: I had no idea you thought highly of the Nature Boy Woooo! Vince: Dammit I need more allies and an enemy of my enemy is my friend isn't that right?
