Speaking on CNBC, MGA Entertainment CEO Isaac Larian said that Mattel has rejected his company's "very fair offer" and that he would hate for the company to "go the way of Toys R' Us," namely into bankruptcy. Larian said that Mattel's "family and friends" board doesn't have experienced businesspeople, saying it is populated by people who have "no idea about the toy business." When asked what MGA would do if they took over Mattel, Larian said he would fire the entire board, saying that they are "entirely useless," and that he would focus on new products and new designs, adding that Mattel has great infrastucture but lacks "real toys." Larian also warned that if Mattel continues doing what they're doing, they will be bankrupt "in a year or so." Read more at: thefly.com/landingPageNews.php?id=2921923

Dude sounds sour that Mattel wouldn’t sell to them.
They’ve been one of, if not the, top toy company in the world for years. I think they know what they are doing

Yeesh - you'd almost think that Larian here has been embroiled in a heated to the point of turning litigious feud with Mattel for the better part of fifteen years...
...oh, wait.

I think they know what they are doing To stay unbiased, Mattel has stayed alive thank to Barbie, Cars, WWE, and Frozen. They did fan service with Master of the Universe, but I think that took a hit, and those in management made sure to suck the life blood from that line. If you asked me, there aren’t that many in-store brands that “know” toys anymore. I look at toys with my kids and just see garbage. Its either too basic or over thought.

WWE is a drop in the bucket to Mattel's overall bottom line. Mattel's bread is buttered heaviest on the side of their four Power Brands - Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher Price/Thomas & Friends, and American Girl. WWE falls under their 'partner brands' heading - a combination of all non-owned, licensed products they produce - and gets all of one mention in their most recent financial statement. The only Power Brand that the combined sales of all their partner brands outperformed in 2018 was American Girl. Barbie, Hot Wheels, and FP/Thomas each individually garnered more in sales in 2018 than the sales of all of their partner brands combined - that's total pull of Disney, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, NBCUniversal, DC Consumer Products, and Mojang combined.

I think he's on to something, they lost DC and Monster Jam, if WWE wasn't the $#!+$ they'd probably lose that license too. They're lucky they have Barbie and Hot Wheels.
Their recent failing is really frustrating because they can make really good affordable toys like our WWE figures or the Imaginext stuff.

All Mattel has to do is create a WWE Legends line with wrestlers from the 70s, 80s and Attitude Era and sell them online. That is $300 million a year in revenue right there and a license to print money.

Isn’t Mattel the most recognizable brand out there? This “fat cat” has no clue what he’s talking about.

There stock is very low under $12 a share right now. Meanwhile hasbro remains around $105 or so a share. Bankrupt in a year though? I don't see it happening but who knows.

Mattel is actually trending downward faster than the industry average. They’re really struggling in China due to bad logistics. The entire toy industry is trending downward, and we’ve known that for a couple of years. Specifically with all of the industry data Hasbro put out due to the poor Star Wars sales.
ToysRus is still hurting these companies. The space on shelves at Walmart and Target is super limited and those places are competing with an Amazon landscape that continues to push consumers more towards their computers.
It wouldn’t be the craziest thing I’ve ever heard for Mattel to go bankrupt. You can say Barbie and Hot Wheels all you want but there is a product lifecycle to every product. If they aren’t willing to adapt and develop in the right areas as the traditional toy demand changes then they’ll die.
Every business class ever taught tells the story of Barnum and Bailey being replaced by Cirque du Soleil. I’m sure it’s much more difficult to sell toys to a Fortnite addicted 10 year old in 2019 than it was to sell He-man to kids in 1985. Larian gets the shift but he’s just being a total d*ck about it, and fairly hyperbolic.

We kind of need to go back round where we have independent toy stores but as you said where the toy industry is going down is that actually going to be a profitable business.

I had no idea off the top of my head who the hell MGA was. Apparently they're behind Bratz and LOL Surprise balls. Whoop-dee-doo! Is he kind of right? Yeah. I think most toy companies except Funko and the small companies that barely move the needle are run by bean counters who know jack-all about toys...but this dude comes off as a sour douche who didn't get a toy he wanted. Are those really losses though? How many DC guys really sell well besides The Bat? Marvel toys have been hot for years, while DC has largely been an afterthought aside from the DCUC line. If the odds were in their favor, I think Mattel would have sunk more effort into the line long before now. Marvel is a bigger deal than DC right now. Besides, they basically let it go because keeping WWE was a priority. Monster Jam is...well...Monster Jam. Eh.

I think Mattel has put out one of the best WWE products out there without a doubt BUT I do want to see another company take a stab at it. I kind of want something different, a different take on it. But that’s just my personal opinion
