For a long time, pro wrestling to me was always "less than" when it was compared to traditional sports like basketball, baseball, football. As a kid I had thousands of sports cards, and I think out of all of those, I had one or two wrestling cards from the '80s, one being of Andre. Later, I rented WCW/nWo Revenge a few times, had a Scott Steiner action-figure, and then a handheld video game of Rick Steiner vs. Scott Steiner. I was obsessed with sports - pro and college - knew all the stats, champions, so on, so forth. Wrestling was on the radar but toward the bottom, under boxing, bowling, billiards, more "off beat" sports. Then in late 1999 I came across The Rock and Mankind in a match on RAW, and I became obsessed, moving wrestling to the very top. I personally think most sports fans in America are like what I was initially - pro wrestling is on the radar, but it's more of a novelty sport. That's kind of how ESPN treats it. What causes us "obsessed" wrestling fans to break away from most sports fans and put wrestling toward the top instead of treating it as a "novelty"?

We simply enjoy it more than football, MMA, movies, sitcoms, reality shows and other sports or forms of entertainment.

Football is always and will be number 1 for me . Wrestling is a close second but it’s just different. I think mostly because wrestling has no off season so I can’t really miss it like I do football

Acrobatic violence we could only dream of doing and sanctioned, characters we wish we were, cartoon storylines we can invision ourselves in, and some other stuff. Nothing sparks the creative mind in sports like wrestling.

Good question. Maybe because it is treated as less-than “real sports” is part of the reason. It’s just one of things that when you’re into it, you’re INTO it.

wrestling needs characters strong enough to cross into the mainstream to connect with it. Hogan, Austin, Rock and to a lesser degree Cena are examples of this. we haven’t had a strong enough character to do that in a long time.

Its not like regular sport yeah there's athleticism but there's storyline and a huge sense of unpredictability that you don't get with other sports.
Then again I don't care for other sports.

It's mainly because most of you haven't given the best sport in the world a proper chance.
But it's above any other combat sport precisely because it's 'fake'/scripted.

Speaking for myself personally, I've never cared whatsoever for any other sport, not even football (or as Americans call it, soccer). Never have, and likely never will. They just never appealed to me. Pro wrestling appeals to me with larger than life characters, insane athleticism, and most importantly, the storytelling. You're not going to find those aspects in any other sport.

Because it's not a sport. It's a tv show like any other. Talent alone doesn't dictate who's best. It's always been about the stories, drama and pageantry to me.

I'll watch RAW over anything else. Even if the Steelers vs Dolphins is the Monday Night football game, my focus is still on WWE.

Behave. It's the most popular sport in the world for a reason, it's comfortably the best.

Agreed lol I used to play 3 times a week when I lived in London but havent played at all in my new city (Colchester) for about 8 months. Finally got the numbers together from my fellow local Pokemon Go players to get a 5 a side sorted for next week ... im soooo excited to play again. Best sport in the world imo

I'm a theatre producer by trade, that's how I feed my family, and pro wrestling fascinated me from being a young boy who dreamed of working in live theatre. It's every live entertainment and theatre experience rolled into one:
It's the circus It's vaudeville It's melodrama It's comedy It's tragedy It's satire It breaks the fourth wall It's gladiators in the colloseum It's every discipline of dance
It's the only medium where the actor must never admit he is an actor.
It's the only type of performance where the script changes based on the live response of the audience (see: Seth cashing in at WM31).
It knowingly pulls back the curtain but never admits to it.
It has its own culture and language.
Wrestling is so much to me because it satisfies so many of my tastes.

I can imagine it can get quite boring if you watch it without having grown up in a soccer-loving city. For me I've tried so much to sit through an NFL game but just can't lol
