Thought this might be a cool thread. Anyone pay attention or get into their city or town politics? Council seating or anything? Let’s keep it civil and not get into presidential or anything else because we all know how that goes and I’ll lock it. One and only warning

I vote but my city's political state is a mess. We have a good mayor but he's trying very hard to do his best. If he doesn't get reelected the police chief will leave. We have a guy who's the head of Code Enforcement who should be fired. He plays favoritism which gets people off the hook.

IMO more people should be into local politics as that is what effects your day to day lives more then what national politics do.

It's always pretty much the same in just about any big city or small town. Someone is having an affair, the police chief is corrupt, and someone is always taking bribes for favors.

I'm only into one local political person, whom I absolutely love and defend on a constant basis, her heart is in the right place for making NY a better place. The rest of them I don't care about since they don't have anyone's interests but there own.

I’m from Illinois. Our governor implemented several new laws effective today, July 1st.
The gas tax doubled, from 19 cents per gallon to 38 cents per gallon.
Cigarette taxes increased by $1, making it $2.98 per pack.
The legal age for purchasing cigarettes also increased from 18 to 21.
If you’re caught texting while driving, not only will you be fined, but you’ll receive a moving violation — a blemish on your driving record.

We have a guy running for mayor against the incumbent who is a totally nuts. He has Zero political experience at all. He owns a business other than that I don't trust the guy. A few guys who I work with think he's nuts. We were talking politics in the garage on lunch today. I tried not to get involved. I just went along with it. I did have a cousin who was on the school board though. Being on the school board is a lot of pressure. People threaten board members and whatnot. It's bad.

That's the old go-to when it comes to taxing something. Gotta love that age change though. You can drive, enlist in the military, buy porn, and play the lottery...but you by God will not drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes for three more years. And I see that as an absolute win. You want to text? Pull over.

2.98 for a pack of cigarettes. lol. in canada a pack costs about $12. $2.98 is just the tax. The average cost of cigarettes in Illinois is $12. So that’s about $15 per pack.

Living in Illinois is hard as it is. I’m glad I don’t smoke.

But at least weed is going to be legal now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ugh, don't forget about the rate hike in license plate stickers, privately owned red light cameras till 2050 (thanks Dick Dailey!) Non-stop construction every day, all year. I swear, the state HAS to be in bed with the auto shops everywhere. So many pot holes and whatnot. And also don't forget the toll booths every 2 miles on the expressways. BUT AGAIN! WEED IS LEGAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and that's just another way they can make money by giving people DUIs when they are caught smoking and driving. YOU PRITZKER!

Tennessee passed a law effective today that you're not allowed to have your phone in your hand at all. No texting, no talking. Either hands free or nothing. We've had the no texting while driving law for awhile now.

I don't know how low income families around here can even get by. So many taxes and fines and whatnot. But I guess the electric scooters you can rent for a buck a minute is a good trade off.

I lost the mayoral race last year for my boro. Pretty close though, 1034-990. Not bad for a staunch, well documented, VERY vocal left wing nut like me in the middle of Trump Country. Also, insanely high turnout for a local election considering the population is only about 5k, but everyone figured this would be a weird one because our school board is a giant cluster and everyone, even people who don't have kids like me, had an opinion on how ed it was on a scale of 1 to USSR. Our council has been the same forever. Only reason I ran for mayor was because I didn't want the council president to get to keep the mayoral seat without a fight considering our old mayor died at the age of 93 two years ago. So when I say the same forever, I mean the same forever.
