Jakks made surfer Sting and Crow Sting because of the TNA license.

Jakks made Sting in their TNA and Legends of the Ring line I would say: Macho Man Randy Savage Miss Elizabeth Ricky the Dragon Steamboat Kerry Von Erich Updated versions of Legends, but its unfair to compare mid-2000s technology to todays

Fink JJ Dillon Wendi Richter prototype I thought Jakks did a Fink in series 19? I remember seeing one back when I collected Jakks I thought I remembered Bill or someone claiming it was a first time ever figure. Jakks Fink kinda does sound familiar now.

There's a lot, but there's a lot they didn't do from Jakks either, like Kona Crush, Taskmaster, LOD 2000, Sunny, Luna Vachon, Mountie, Giant Gonzalez, Andy Kaufman, Freddie Blassie, Captain Lou, Mr. Fuji, Don Muraco, Brooklyn Brawler, Outsiders 2 pack in wrestling gear, a referee, etc..
We got a lot of figures in a wide release that Jakks fumbled the release of, like polka dot Dusty, debut Mankind, debut Goldust, if you weren't willing to pay a premium online for what we call basics today, you weren't gonna get em.
Jakks never did Harlem Heat, blue Hart Foundation, Red Rooster, Steamboat, Savage, or a complete NWA Road Warriors.

To boil it down, no, we aren’t getting quite the breadth of the CS Jakks line, BUT the trade off is that overall the figures are better - the parts, scale, detail etc. also, as many have said, pulling off Macho alone is such a giant leap that many never thought would EVER happen. I wish we saw more Legends/FB like many others but overall most of my favorite legends based figs are Mattel’s so it’s a win

I have completed my Jakks RA and Classic collection. The only mattels I buy are 1st in the lines that were never made by mattel. Mattel has done a good job covering legends that were not made by Jakks.

Mattel hasn’t been perfect but OP sounds a little like sour grapes because they haven’t made so and so or whoever.
Quality/ details, scale and saying “besides of macho man, steamboat , etc” who else have they really done jakks didn’t do?
Wait a sec, Macho Man was a HUGE get for Mattel. Counting him as just one guy Mattel did is undervaluing the demand there was for modern macho figs. Not to mention mattel has given us just about every version of macho man you could want. Even if you didn’t want all of them, surely one for everyone.
For me, Magnum TA was also awesome to get that jakks didn’t do.

To be fair, Jakks made Black Hair Flair, Mattel Doesn't Care, Mattel won't Dare make Black Hair Flair, But they made a Bear

Mattel also has given us Retros and better executed than Jakks’ LJN figs.

not a fair comparison.
Jakks had a legends line. Mattel does not.
Jakks could sign and make whoever they wanted (within reason)....and even talent that didn't want to work with WWE could circumvent them and just deal with Jakks directly.
Mattel has a list of who is under a legends contract.....and even approval on making someone thats under contract seems stricter than back in the jakks days.
Jakks had depth. But Mattel has Macho Man & Sting. So they win. Me & everyone else in the world will take Macho Man & Sting figures over Tank Abbot & Andy Kaufman any day of the week

It's apples to oranges, because right now Mattel has little to no role in what wrestlers are signed. And that cuts both ways. They've produced an incredibly deep roster that includes pretty much every top star from the 80's-today, solid portions of the midcard from the 90's, and a lot of top names from the indies and Japan over the past decade. But that was mostly a case of right place, right time. Personally I'm far more interested in having the top names Jakks never made (Steamboat, Sting, Macho) over the older stars and lower card guys Mattel hasn't made. Mattel not signing talent directly is a huge issue, imo. But overall they've produced an incredibly impressive roster of highly detailed and in scale figures that would be hard to top. This is my sentiment exactly. Mattel does not seem to have the leeway Jakks did to pursue talent outside of a legends contract.

Here is a real question.
Why was jakks able to have such a successful legends line and mattel not so much ?
Would people support a basics legends line ?
When does mattels contract run out ?

Jakks was able to sign wrestlers to deals without having to go through the WWE. Their figures were also more affordable. As for why Jakks was never able to sign Macho Man Randy Savage, we may never know, but my best guess is that Mattel is a bigger brandname and has more resources and money to sign him.

Excellent question. I do agree that overall Jakks appeared to have much more success in moving figures. Maybe it was the price point. I personally would not collect a legends basic line. I just collect the elite. I wonder if they could try and implement a subscription line of legends. Perhaps set a number of subscribers to move forward with it. If the number isn’t met, then just not proceed with it.

This is my sentiment exactly. Mattel does not seem to have the leeway Jakks did to pursue talent outside of a legends contract. Mattel signed direct deals early in the line. But it seems like they took some financial losses on those contracts when the Legends line failed. So I have a strong belief that it's not so much a lack of leeway as a directive from some Mattel higher up after the Legends line bombed. And with Mattel's current financial situation, it's a lot cheaper to piggyback WWE's contracts than to pay wrestlers directly.
