The celebrated and decorated [/i]Fabulous Freebirds, Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy[/b][/i] are set to square off against the up and coming tag team of Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers, known as The Southern Boys[/i]. But after the introduction of the Freebirds, no one comes out when The Southern Boys music begins to play. The song restarts and the team are introduced again.
Hayes, Gordy and the ref look at each other confused. The ref whispers in the rung announcers ear. It’s announced that Armstrong and Smothers have a ten count to get to the ring or they forfeit the match. The crowd boo and the ref begins his count. At the count of six Smothers hobbles out from the back. His lip is bleeding and he’s clearly hurt but that doesn’t stop him from pushing the ref aside and attempting to fight with the Freebirds on his own.
He gets a few god shots in before the ref interferes in the chaos and Smothers gets caught with a DDT from Hayes. While the ref is trying to corral Gordy out of the ring, someone with their head bandaged slides into the ring and cracks Hayes in the back with a pipe and tosses it from the ring. Hayes rolls off of Smothers and the mystery man pulls Smothers on top before Dropkicking Gordy off the apron and alerting the ref to the pin giving the beaten and bruised Southern Boys the win.
Hiroshi Hase and Owen Hart[/i] and Brian Pillman and Brad Armstrong[/i] shake hands before leaving Owen and Pillman to start the match. The crowd are immediately into the match from Pillmans and Owens fast paced, athletic sequences and reversals. The two stare down before tagging in their partners. Armstrong and Hase do their own share of athletics before Hase catches a kick and turns it into a STF. Armstrong gets to the ropes quickly forcing Hase to break the hold.
Hart and Hase take control following this grounding Armstrong and working over his leg. The ref calls the match declaring it a Double DQ. Hayes and Gordy continue their assault until Pillman and Hase chase them off with chairs in hand.
With round one concluded, the main event non-tournament match pitting U.S. and TV Champions Sting and Lex Luger[/i] against challengers Barry Windham and the Iron Sheik[/i] begins. Luger and Windham start off wasting little time trading punches and kicks. Luger wins out and tags in Sting. He makes work of Windham with Dropkicks and a Gorilla Press Slam. Sheik tries to run interference only to get Back Body Tossed.
The challengers regroup on the outside as Sting yells and pops the crowd. Windham takes advantage mowing down Sting while his back is turned.
