Crockett Cup 1989 Day 2
The shows open with a promo from Michael Hayes backstage after the Freebirds screwed Brad Armstrong and Brian Pillman as well as Owen Hart and Hiroshi Hase out of their tournament chances. He claims they did it because there was no way Steve Armstrong was the man that showed in bandages to help Tracy Smothers beat The Freebirds. He challenges The Young Pistols to a match in the future but says the Freebirds have other business for Day 2.
The Fantastics, Tommy Rogers and Bobby Futon[/i] start off staring across the ring from The Road Warriors, Animal and Hawk[/i]. The crowd is clearly behind the Warriors as Hawk poses for the crowd. Fulton and Animal start off and Fulton spends the majority of that time out running and dodging Animal before tagging in Rogers. Rogers tries the same strategy but Animal is prepared and grabs Rogers by the hair and tosses him into the corner. Animal and Hawk control the next couple of minutes until Rogers causes them to collide and tags in Fulton. Despite the flurry from Fulton, a brutal looking Double Clothesline from the Warriors followed by the Doomsday Device puts the Fantastics away in just under 10 minutes.
The Midnight Express, Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane[/i] are in the ring with Eddie Gilbert. Gilbert has a mic and says that whenever they want it, he and Rick Steiner invite Vader and Crusher Bigelow to a non-title match. He says he’ll be watching from the front row as Vader and Bigelow[/i] make their way down to the ring.
The camera shows Eddie Gilbert and Rick Steiner watching form the front with the U.S. Tag Titles on their laps. Back in the ring, Eaton starts off with Vader after a brief huddle with James E. Cornette.
The trio breaks leaving Eaton to start with Bigelow. The two circle each other and Eaton shoots for Bigelows legs but gets pressed to the mat by the big man. He scrambles to his feet and quickly goes fo the legs again but this time Bigelow grabs and picks him up and throws him down with a Powerbomb. At Cornys behest, Eaton powders out of the ring and Lane joins the pair in another huddle.
Eaton returns to the ring and him and Lane attempt to out quick their opponents but Bigelow and Vader manage to keep up and continually overpower the Midnights. The Midnights get frustrated and start to restore to underhanded tactics which turns the match in their favor.
Just as the Midnights seem to have the match won, Bigleow ducks a right hand from Eaton which in turn nails Lane and knocks him him out of the ring. A distraught Eaton gets spun around and hit with a Greetings From Asbury Park which gives Bigelow and Vader the win.
The next match between Samu and Fatu, The Samoan Swat Team[/i] and The Southern Boys, Tracy Smothers and “Steve” Armstrong[/i] doesn’t last long as the Samoans maul the Southerns from the get go. They isolate Smothers and in succession, Samu nails him with a Savate Kick and Fatu finishes the match with a Splash from the top rope that gives the SST the win.
Dan Spivey and Butch Reed[/i] vs. Junkyard Dog and Scott Steiner[/i] immediately starts off rough as Spivey and Reed argue over who will start the match. The problems between the two continue through out the match as constant miscues cost the team momentum. Spivey finds some success after isolating the relatively inexperienced Steiner. But when he seems to have Steiner put away Reed blind tags in and gets rolled up for the three as Spivey throws up his hands and leaves.
The last second round match pitting Buzz Sawyer and Dick Murdoch[/i] against Super Strong Machine and Rip Morgan[/i] starts before either team enters the ring as Murdoch and Sawyer jump their opponents during their entrance and begin to beat the two up all over the ringside area and into the crowd.
Sawyer brings Machine into the ring and takes time to jaw with the crowd. This proves disastrous as he’s immediately struck with a viscous looking Lariat once he enters the ring. Murdoch and Morgan continue their brawl in the crowd while Machine and Sawyer trade heavy shots and slams in the ring. After about 6 minutes Machine hits Sawyer with his Devil Windmill Suplex (Double Underhook Suplex) our of nowhere for the win.
In an unannounced non-tournament match, Owen Hart, Hiroshi Hase, Brian Pillman and Brad Armstrong[/i] call out Michael Hayes[/i]challenging him to find partners. Hayes, ever confident, struts out followed by ”Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin, Barry Windham, and The Iron Sheik[/i].
Garvin starts out with Pillman, and toys with and taunts him trying to get him fired up. Pillman stays clear headed and takes advantage with athletic wrestling sequences capped off by a fake out Dropkick. Garvin scurries to his corner and tags in Windham as Pillman tags in Hase. The match falls into a brawl between the two and in the fracas, Sheik takes out Brad Armstrong’s knee with a foreign object. The crowd boo and Pillman and Hart chase him off, leaving Hase without a partner to tag in.
Garvin and Sheik stand up to Pillman and Hart as the ref tries to break it up. This leaves Hase to the mercy of Windham and Hayes both of whom take full advantage of the freedom they have.
With the situation on the outside progressively becoming more and more tense, more refs and backstage personnel join in to try and break things up. In the ring, Hase moves just in time causing Windham to drive the heel of his boot into the nose of Hayes. Armstrong hobbles back up to the aprons and Hase tags out. Fueled by adrenaline Armstrong stands his own against Windham as the two teams outside of the ring finally begin to rail much to the crowds delight.
Armstrong grabs Windham boot and nails him with it. He tags in Hase, who picks up and takes him over with a Northern Lights Suplex. The original ref runs into the ring to count the fall after 10 plus chaotic minutes.
