Your thoughts?
Personally, I use to never want to say they soldout. They did experiment with new sounds and looks, but it for sure looked to capitalize on late 90's American trends and borrowed a lot from grunge or concepts and vibes. I hold no hate to this. Because, Metallica waited 5 years to release album. Grunge had taken over, and continued on with Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam and others. And Post Grunge's seeds would begin to plant. And in economic sense it makes perfect sense. As well as musically it was fantastic, and had great song writing materiel and written content. In business sense Metallica could of put out a follow up to the Black Album in 1993/1994. But, due to the Black Album tour it was to much. I think Load was perfect musically and economically.

I wouldn't call it selling out, rather than just evolving. A lot of bands/artists do it. Also love Load and Reload just as much as The Black Album, honestly.

"Load?! More like Load of crap!"
When you change your music to be more accessible to the mainstream, yes you completely sold out. Don't get me wrong I like Metallica even if some of there choices are odd (Why would you even list Jason Newsted as your bass player if you are just going to mute his bass line?). The only evolving they did musically was to be more radio friendly. A good example is looking at the run time and track listing from record to record. The self titled record is 3 minutes shorter than the previous (...And Justice For All) but has 3 more songs.

I've never understood "selling out" as a pejorative. I guess everyone's mileage may vary, but I'll be outright and honest right here - I can't name a single, solitary artist whose material I listen to solely, or even partially, on the basis of their "artistic integrity". If I find something engaging or sonically pleasing, I'll listen to it. IDGAF whether the driving effort behind putting the sound to tape was to make money, to serve as an emotional outlet, or to make noise and see if somebody would bite. If I think it's good, it's good.
Did Metallica drastically alter their sound? Yes. Did it make them lots and lots of money? Yes. Did the guys behind the records become the poster children for music as a corporate commodity? Yes. Do I still like at least one track if not more off of every record they've put out? Yes.
Calling artists sellouts is something my friends and I did in middle school to try and undercut one another's efforts to buck the mainstream. If you like the music, just enjoy it. Who cares how gilded Lars Ulrich's toilet is?

Yes, and the Black album is one of my least favorite albums of theirs next to St. Anger.

I saw them at Soldier Field two years ago. They’re still awesome.

Simple answer. No. I know most fans hate it and even they hate it but I think the song on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack is awesome haha ’I Disappear’ is (as the kids say “low key”) one of my favorite Metallica songs.

Yes, and the Black album is one of my least favorite albums of theirs next to St. Anger. Black is such a good album in my opinion. I like when a metal band releases softer tracks, similar to what Slipknot has done. I think it gives the fans something to look forward to, and making it that much better when they crank the attitude back up. Also, no, Metallica never sold out, they just grew up.

I prefer the first four albums. You could pick any of those four albums and say it's their best album and I would agree. In terms of "softer tracks", I would put Hero of the Day above anything on the Black album. I will say...I think Spit Out the Bone is the best song they've written since the Justice album.

I dont feel it works when bands try to evolve. People always yearn for the traditional sound that made them popular to begin with. How many times have you gone to a concert and all what the people want to hear is "the old stuff"?

i mean, if doing the same thing past the age of 40 means they didn't soldout, then yes
like imagine punk/punk-rock bands singing about the same issues past the age of 40, kinda embarrassing isn't it.

You might figure out that I have some bias, but yes, they did sellout. But so has every notable artist in the history of ever. If Metallica never sold out, they wouldn't be one of the top 3 most recognizeable bands on the planet. But here they are.

Yes. They sold out as soon as they signed their record deal. Just like every other major artist.
Whether they compromised the integrity of their music by choosing to make more radio friendly hits in favor of what they'd truly prefer to release as artists is a whole 'nother issue.

Which Metallica is then the "real" Metallica? The more mainstream-friendly "sold out" Metallica that is now in its current form has existed for longer than the binge and purge "pre-sell out" Metallica.
Just like one can McGovney, Burton, or Newsted it all they want, but the longest tenured bass player the group has ever had is Trujillo.

Had you asked me this when I was a teenager, I would've said "HELL YEAH THEY SOLD OUT!" Today, I'd say the opposite. Bands evolve and mature overtime, just like we do and I think the longevity of a band like Metallica is partially due to them evolving. For example, I'm a big Howard Stern fan and he's evolved as well (long time fans will say the same thing - that Howard went Hollywood and sold out) How cringey, embarrassing and outright....creepy would it be for a 65 year old man to have a show with the same, exact format he used to have when he was in his heyday? CM Poor said it best, really. That being said, I know it's cool to hate on St. Anger but My World is a damn good song.
