I was a wrestling fan for 13 years at the point and as soon as it was announced I figured it was going to go the full hour with no falls and then the dreaded "overtime" gimmick would be used. It wasn't a great match at all till the end. It was something different and not used again for another Mania. Shows that the WWF knew it wasn't a good idea.

I am also a member of the "Put him back in the sharpshooter club."
What I remember from that match was being a huge Bret mark and an avid hater of everything Shawn Michaels. His entire push leading up to the event made me sick. I knew it was a foregone conclusion HBK was taking the strap but I was still on the edge of my seat hoping Bret could pull it off. When it went to OT, I thought I got my wish of Bret retaining.
I remember chucking a plate at the wall when Michaels won it in OT.

The biggest mistake of this match is that it was a year too late IMO. The perfect time to put Shawn over was at Wrestlemania 11 as a babyface. You still had a lot of guys for Shawn to work with: Diesel, Razor Ramon, Lex Luger, Backlund, Yokozuna, Bret Hart, Sid, Taker, Mabel, Bulldog, Bundy, Tatanka etc. According to Prichard anytime prior to WM11 when it came up about turning HBK face Vince would lose his sh*t completely. then he piped up and said hey I think we should turn Shawn. I think this sounds entirely plausible to be honest....LOL.

He had tenure and the right attitude in 94, it was a perfect opportunity to have Diesel turn on his best friend or something (even though they started to build Diesel as a face around SummerSlam). It's too bad Vince couldn't see it, or couldn't see that the fans wanted the Heartbreak Kid, not Teddy Bear Shawn Michaels.

I would also throw my hat into Steamboat/Rude as being the best, even at 30 minutes. Rock and Triple H may be the worst. Somewhere in between you get Bret and Michaels.

I felt Rock & HHH was quite good. At the very least it was exciting. Lesnar vs Angle was superb.....but Steamboat vs Rude? Magnificent.

Yeah I think there was just way too much shenanigans in Triple H vs Rock. Really takes the seriousness out of it for me. I'm sure it might not be the worst ever, but just talking purely WWF I'd put it there. Worst also doesn't necessarily mean outright bad either.
