I loved SummerSlam 91 when I was a kid. I watched it religiously. But I haven't watched it in probably close to 20 years. So the other day, I put it on for nostalgic reasons, and I noticed many things about it that never really clicked in when I was younger.
The amount of kick outs from finishing moves.
Bret Hart kicks out of the Perfect Plex, The Mountie kicks out of Boss Man's side slam finish, Paul Roma kicks out of the British Bulldog's powerslam finish. This was stuff unheard of in that era unless it was Hogan kicking out of the heels finish at the end of the match.
The hardcore match.
LOD vs. Nasty Boys was a hardcore rules match, without it being said. The weapons they used, they upped the violence for that era of WWE wrestling. I believe it was stated as a street fight, but let's just be honest, that's the way of saying "hardcore rules" in that era.
The 'attitude'.
The Mountie shooting the middle finger to the police officer, the sexual tension of the man in leather going after the Mountie in jail, it was all stuff you would have seen during the attitude era. But in 1991, it happened at this event.
Looking back during that time frame, no other WWE PPV sticks out with having all that happening. Survivor Series a few months later would go back to the normal kid friendly programming that we kids at the time were used to seeing. But if nobody has ever seen SummerSlam 91, please check it out. I think you will really enjoy it!

SSlam 90 will always be my fav but man 91 is up there as well.Definitely a show I would recommend to younger fans who wanna get into this era.The best era of all time IMO!
Bret/Perfect,Mountie going to jail,Virgil having his best match with Dibiase,Jake/Taker crashing the wedding reception, Gorilla/Bobby/Piper on commentary etc. Just an all around fun show. I remember renting the VHS tape a ton back in the day.

It was the end of the Hulkamania Era IMO. Ultimate Warrior got fired after the show and Hogan left to make movies. I started becoming more interested in WCW and GWF than the WWF not too long after this show.

Yeah, 1991 was when I first started watching WCW, looking back on it now they had a lot a young talent on their roster; Sting, Luger, Steiner Brothers, Vader, Cactus Jack, Dustin Rhodes, Steve Austin, Brian Pillman, Ron Simmons, the Great Muta, Kevin Nash (Oz/Vinnie Vegas), Scott Hall (Diamond Studd), DDP, Shane Douglas, and Nikita Koloff. Plus they still had some talented veterans; Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton, Barry Windham, Butch Reed, Rock and Roll Express, Michael PS Hayes, and Larry Zbyszko. It's amazing that with all that talent they were losing millions of dollar a year... Go figure.

I really liked Summer Slam 1991, this was the year that I was really getting interested in wrestling and the WWF had some really enjoyable PPV's that year. First thing that stands out at this PPV, to me, would have to be Bret vs. Perfect, a really great match. Second thing that stands out, for me at least, would have to be the start of the Jake vs. Macho feud, that was an amazing feud - one of my all-time favorites. If I remember correctly, every match on the card, with the exception of the Bushwhackers/Disasters and Hammer/IRS match, were pretty good. I was a kid at this time so seeing the Mountie go to jail was great, and I really liked the "you want to see the finger, here's the finger," that stuff was hilarious. I also liked how they introduced Sid to the WWF audience, he was over big time. Why he refused Vince's offer to make him the next Hulk Hogan is beyond me. I also really enjoyed Gorilla, Bobby, and Piper on the announcing team. A good, enjoyable PPV all-around.

I think it was 2009 or 2010 Jeremy Piven called Summerslam "Summerfest" And that is still one of the worst Raws of all time, but there actually was an event called Summerfest

One of my favourite PPV’s of that time. I wonder if Vince & co were testing the water and trying to take the WWF in a new direction.
While xenophobic storylines had always existed, running the Iraqi sympathiser story line while the war was going on was pretty risqué. And all the points the OP raised point to trying something new. The whole PPV felt like it had a more realistic feel, as opposed to the cartoonish family theme.
Just a theory, but in ‘90 the WWF tried, and failed, to make the Warrior the main man. With the incoming Ric Flair in 91, could the story writers have been trying to shift the product to be more in keeping with the Nature Boy character to make him the man??

I agree that Summerslam 1991 bookmarks the end of the "Golden Era" of the WWF where Hulkamania had been ruling the world since the 80s and pro wrestling was larger than life.
To this day, I can't get over how quickly the company changed after this event. Just think about the first episode of Monday Night Raw. That debut show took place only about 16 months after Summerslam 1991 and the product/roster couldn't have been more drastically different.
I'm always fascinated by the ridiculous turnaround in the world of pro wrestling.

i rented this summer slam event (along with '94) on vhs from my local video store countless times. i remember enjoying this event (now mainly for the nostalgic factor). a fun six man to kick off the show, hart/perfect, dibiase making virgil look good lol, the jailhouse match, lod/nasty's street fight, your typical hogan/warrior "against all odds" tag match, and of course the wedding.
