I remember a few years ago I had a thread on here about this, and it brought up some interesting discussion, so I figured let's do it again!
How would wrestling survived the 80s if the internet was a thing??
For example, around 95% of the wrestling shows back then were taped and shown weeks - even months - later on weekly episodes. Imagine reading in October that Savage destroyed Steamboat's neck, even though it wouldn't air until many weeks later. Would people still watch the weekly shows, the SNME shows, or would ratings for that kind of stuff go down because they read the spoilers??
Would Hulk Hogan be as popular then if social media was around??
Would the fans learn the inside scoops like we find out now about what's happening behind the scenes??
It just makes me wonder how drastically wrestling in the 80s would have been different if we had the internet there.

they woulda had to step it up and start doing things faster just like they did in 90's when the dirt sheets came out. i got observer & pro wrestling torch every week since 1993 and it took em a bit to realize raw cannot be taped 2 weeks in advance with nitro being live.

Hogan would've been the most hated man in pro wrestling. Fans would've resented him and rooted for guys like Piper and Backlund.

It wouldn’t have survived if social media was around then. Twitter and dirt sheets have ruined professional wrestling.

Well, can you imagine Macho Man retweeting some gif of Hogan lusting after Elizabeth? Entirely different world back then and it was probably for the best.

Fans were alot different back then. They didn't start to become hate filled and blood thirsty till ECW came along

Back then, you had to watch the show to know what was going on. No rumor mill or dirt sheets. No online forums to speculate and especially no social media platforms to stir the pot.
You wanted wrestling, you gotta watch the show when it was on. That's the way it should be.

well to me this question doesn't really make too much sense because if the internet existed in the 80s, the differences there would be go far past just wrestling. the culture as a whole would be ramified to such an extent that the product itself wouldn't have been what it was and would be unrecognizable by comparison.

The internet did technically exist in the 80s, but barely anyone knew about it. What was more known was BBS (bulletin board system), which was sort of the internet of the 80s so there was chatrooms and message boards.
Still I can imagine how it could've been if Twitter was around, kayfabe would be dead.

It would have ruined alot of great storylines in pro wrestling. Who would want to see Ultimate Warrior talking on Twitter?

There are two possible outcomes. One is that the wrestlers become entitled whiners all over twitter. Or, they work everyone even worse.
Social media has not been used to it's full potential today. It seems to me that it would be quite easy to work someone these days.
