For the last 20 years people in pro wrestling have talked about how Owen Hart was the absolute nicest person in the history of the business. Is it possible that WWF management (Vince Russo specifically?) took advantage of his niceness with the stunt that took his life? For example, perhaps Russo knew other guys who loved to yell and kick up a fuss and complain would have been unwilling to take up the Blue Blazer gimmick, or drop to the ring from a height that high. Perhaps through the years, time and time again argumentative talents have fought back against those sorts of gimmicks and stunts. Is it possible the WWF booking team of 1999 took advantage of the fact that Owen was such a nice, agreeable guy, knowing he’d agree to the stunt and gimmick?

Probably. It’s well documented Owen never wanted to do the stunt, he was obviously too nice to decline their plans. Although barring in mind he had done the stunt before at other shows.

Now this should be on the Classic board. But I feel it wasn’t the booking team, but his fear of Vince. I think between the MSJ and Owen’s refusal of working the program with Debra he felt he had to do it. Of course there’s no way to know what was on Owen’s mind, but that’s what I think.

All I know is after hearing about the full background of the whole situation I felt sick to my stomach and almost didn't want to watch and wanted to sell my impossible to get floor tickets to the July '99 Raw in Cleveland. He should still be alive today. He should have been up on that stage for the Hall of Fame in the last 10 or so years. We should have had CS figures, We should have had Legends figures. The Owen Hart DVD should have had him doing an introspective interview and match introductions. He should have wrestled Kurt, Jericho, Benoit, Eddie, Angle. Oje should be a prominent player on WWE tv right now. So much was robbed of the fan...but SO SO SO SO MUCH MORE was robbed of the family.

Oje has a great look as a modern day wrestler. Owen vs Angle would have been great. We missed Bret vs Angle, this would have been a great replacement. Bret is one of my favorite wrestlers ever, but I detest how he speaks of Martha. I hate how fans have made her out to be some sort of bad person. The WWE killed her husband with negligence/stupidity. She has a right to be angry for the rest of her life. In terms of wrestling figures and the HOF, I think the only way it happens is if Vince donates any profit from Owen's involvement directly to Owen's Foundation. WWE needs to come to the party in a big way to repair. Bret also needs to stop saying nasty things about Martha. I think if Bret, Triple H, Austin and Mark Henry worked together with Vince, they could get Martha onboard.

I don't blame her for not having those things, I blame Vince. YES, he could have said no, but things were different then, and as much as we wish it wasn't the case. Owen DID NOT have the clout to say "no" and not have to worry about SOME backlash. Rock, Austin, Mick, Triple H, Taker, at that time could refuse and not worry about repercussions, but not Owen. Now, that's not to say Vince would have done it, but I can see where Owen was coming from.

he’d already turned down enough angles where Vince wanted him to cheat on his wife or whatever dumb crapangle, so he felt obligated.
that whole time as a Canadian fan was rough. the Hart’s fell so damn hard.

Owen should have just kept saying "no" to everything. He didn't want to be there, he wanted out in 1997 when his family left for WCW. Eventually Vince would get sick of Owen saying no and either job him out, let him sit at home, or fire him. It sucks that Owen died the way he did, but it also seemed very avoidable.

Owen Hart didn't belong in the rafters. He belonged in the ring where he did his best work.

Stupid gimmick that didn't need this stunt. Refused many a storyline & opponent He didn't agree with since his goal was to GTF out of WWF? I don't see why he went along with it...
Owen also refused to work a storyline with Patriot back in 1997. Although he had plenty of clout then.

WWF is responsible for his death and should be out of business for it happening. In a just world, Vince McMahon should be homeless with Martha Hart financial secure for the rest of her life. I'm glad Bret Hart made peace with the company and has some control of his legacy but I also wish he would have completely severed ties with the company. I think he ultimately does care more about his "character" and wrestling matches than he does his brother. And this is coming from a huge Bret Hart fan and I do know he loves his brother.
At some point before he passes Vince McMahon needs to realize he is a wrestling promoter not an entertainment promoter. A stunt like Owen's was not wrestling related. It was a stunt that should've been portrayed by trained movie stuntmen. For Owen Hart's death, amongst many other evils, I truly hope Vince McMahon fails at his next attempt at the XFL. As a fan of WWE I accept some guilt in Owen's death because I continued to watch the programing several years after his death.

I use to like Vince McMahon much better before the Owen Hart situation. I get this feeling of a rich snob that only cares about the money and not enough about the wrestlers. He is lucky Bret Hart only gave him a black eye.

Owen & Davey wouldn't go along with storylines for him. Bret picked up the slack....said himself he didn't understand what the problem was. Said folks liked Del, he was popular backstage, capable in the ring & had no big ideas about himself. He was just glad of the opportunity. Bret, Vader, Cornette, Goldust & shamrock all said it. Cornette & Bret said the most about it.

Could've been because of the feud between New Japan & All Japan. No idea though, that's just a guess, as there was a feud between both companies at the time (Owen worked in New Japan & Patriot worked in All Japan). Again, just a vague guess.
