Wrestling Memories Rebellion 2001
2001 was a huge year for the WWF and even though many of you guys hated the Alliance storyline, 2001 is a year I have very fond memories of. The WWF put on two UK PPV shows this year. They did Insurrextion in May which took place in London, which I was not able to attend. Which at the time I was really bummed out by. However, had I gone to Insurrextion in May; I probably would not have been able to go to Rebellion which took place in November in Manchester. This would be one of my favorite WWF live events I have ever been to! Like all WWF UK PPV shows, Rebellion 2001 certainly has many βfillerβ matches, but this was a pretty damn stacked show. It took place in the swing of the Alliance storyline and featured WWF vs WCW/ECW through the night and it was something I was really into. To save some money I decided against getting the train and instead my buddy and I got a bus which was brutal with a capital B! The train would have taken between 3 to 4 hours, the bus actually took close to 9 when all was said and done. I have back pain to this day which I blame on this bus ride! The main event of Rebellion 2001 was Stone Cold Steve Austin vs The Rock and it was the first time these two had fought since WrestleMania X7 which is one of my favorite matches of all time. I knew there was no way the title was going to change hands (it was a UK PPV after all) however, I was so excited to see these two go at it live. My friend eventually started to get in better spirits as he was in a real bad mood after the brutal bus ride we had to take. The warm-up match featured Billy and Chuck and these guys live were a riot. They really did play the crowd well and looking back I actually had a lot of fun watching these two. The show officially started with a cage match between Edge and Christian. What was cool about this was they used the old style WWF cage, but it was black instead of blue. This was a fun match. Another good match was the tag team match that had The Hardys going against, the Dudleys and the APA. I would have actually liked this one to go on a bit longer, but it was still a good match. Chris Jericho going against Kurt Angle was awesome. I really like the way that these two worked together and while I am not sure when it could have happened (although they did have a run-in during 2000) a long program with these two would have been a lot of fun. Jericho as the WCW Champion was always strange and back then I hated the way he beat the Rock for the title. The main event of The Rock vs Stone Cold was great. It was over the top, fast and exciting and just as good as the other matches these two have had. Maybe it was because I was there live, but I actually prefer this match to every other match the two had (minus WMX7 of course). We all knew that Austin was walking out of the event as the champion, but having Jericho and Angle get involved made it even more fun. I know that for many these UK WWF PPV events were a waste of time, but I always had a great time. This is especially true for the ones I was there live for, but even watching these on TV back in the day was fun. I really wish they kept on doing these instead of the TV tapings. I know I am in the minority here, but as I said I always had a great time at these shows. Have you seen Rebellion 2001? I would say that if you have not, at the very least it is worth watching Edge vs Christian, the tag match, Kurt Angle vs Jericho and of course, Rock vs Austin. It is a fun few hours of the dying days of the Attitude Era! Even though the trip started off with a horrible bus ride, we had a great time and felt that the bus ride was worth it in the end.

I really enjoyed the Invasion storyline, and Rebellion 2001 was great. My interest has everything to do with the fact that my top 4 favorites of all time (Chris Jericho, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Kurt Angle) were the Main Event scene. I loved Kurt Angle with the WCW United States Championship Title Belt. I wish he had a longer run with it, or at least a run with the WWE version. The King Arthur and the Round Table promo is hilarious.

I look at it as a failed Marvel / DC crossover. Still love the Championship Title Belts and the SuperStars, but the storyline was poorly done.

I loved all the UK PPV's back then. From what I remember the titles never changed hands but the shows were fun and enjoyable.

I didn't even know it existed until around early 2002 when I saw the VHS tape of it at a local Blockbuster store. I bought it though, because I saw the matches on the back of the box and it looked like it was going to be a fun wrestling show. It indeed was that!
Edge vs. Christian for the IC Title in the big style cage was a sweet throwback to the Hogan era of the WWE. Jericho defending the WCW Title against Kurt Angle was fun. Plus we got The Rock vs. Steve Austin!!! That is insane to think a PPV that wasn't Wrestlemania was having Rock vs. Austin in the year 2001.
I think that was one of the last best UK PPVs that the WWE ran. I didn't care for the 2002 ones, or the one in 2003. Those felt like recaps from the last PPV or a Raw. Rebellion 2001 legit felt like something different that we were seeing in an era where there was so much happening for the WWE at the time.

I got all these exclusive UK shows in my personal collection. To me they were enjoyable and had some good gems on em like the Edge/Christian match here as you mentioned.
Gotta dig out some of these Rebellion/Insurrextion shows sometime. It's been a good while since I watched em.

Just bought that DVD off the 'Bay and is in my PPV queue. Brand new, but with a gouge in its shrink wrap like someone tried stealing the disc (it wasn't luckily).

Thanks for the comments guys, this really is a solid PPV and well worth a watch. It is the kind of show when you are looking for something to watch, you can throw on and have a great time with.
Also, I know that I am super weird in that I actually liked the Invasion angle lol. I know that it could have been a million times better and looking back now there is some stuff (such as the crazy amount of titles) that bugs me. However, watching at the time I was fully invested each week in what was going on. Still, it is great to read the arguments against it as I always find it fun how something that clicks for one fan does not for another.

If I were running things, my version of Invasion 2001 would look like this. Triple Threat match WWF World Champion vs. WCW World Champion ECW World Champion Ladder match WWF Intercontinental Champion vs. WWF European Champion vs. WCW United States Champion vs. WCW Television Champion vs. ECW Television Champion Triple Threat Steel Cage match WWF Tag Team Champions vs. WCW Tag Team Champions vs. ECW Tag Team Champions Hardcore match WWF Hardcore Champion vs. WCW Hardcore Champion 30 Minute Ironman match WWF Light Heavyweight Champion vs. WCW Cruiserweight Champion 5-on-5-on-5 Tag Team match Team WWF vs. Team WCW vs. Team ECW If I were running things, my version of Survivor Series 2001 would be exactly the same as above, but they would all be Championship Unification matches, and the 5-man Team match would be a traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team match. I agree with everything else you said.

^ I would tell you that you should be part of the creative team, but ever since he killed his competition Vince hasnβt used his creative team and goes by his vision which often isnβt good. Heβs been surrounded with yes men and former sitcom writers who donβt know wrestling and the product has suffered since!

I'm just good at fixing other people's mistakes with the power of hindsight. I would either say yes to everything Vince says, or I wouldn't last a week.

Fun Fact: Captial Carnage having Jacqueline expose her breasts worked me into thinking the UK is more crude than the US.

I agree with everything else you said. Would certainly make for a more entertaining show, but I think the ECW and WCW inevitably turning on each other would undermine most matches. Though of course we could make ECW and WCW separate entities instead of The Alliance.

Though of course we could make ECW and WCW separate entities instead of The Alliance. In my version, the Alliance never formed. I would have preferred them to be separate during the entire run. Even if Shane still bought WCW, and Stephanie still bought ECW, this still should have been a 3 sided war. Having the Championships of WCW and the big names of ECW was never going to be enough. They needed the big names of WCW and the Championships of ECW to have a level playing field. I understand why they did what they did, and fantasy booking will always be better in our respective minds, but I'm glad Vince actually tried. He could have easily just continued business as usual, and just have the influx of WCW and ECW SuperStars as new WWE SuperStars, with the Alliance Invasion storyline.
