I know GM's have became unpopular over the recent years, but honestly the shows feel naked without them. Looking back at Octobers draft those network board room segments were pure cringe and it was much better when you had a smug GM announcing their pick while the other fumes.
Then at Survivor Series you had HHH leading NXT, his show as they invaded while Raw and Smackdown had no one apart from the Superstars. Take Survivor Series 05 for an example, the GM's rallied their rosters and led them into battle so the lack of them last year made the whole brand warfare thing feel less serious than it should.
Now I'm not looking for GM's who hog TV time and are involved in every storyline. All we need are neutral bosses who appear when needed and lay the law when Superstars step out of line. The whole invisible management feels so generic and just doesn't work for me.

I agree! I think it's so odd when there isn't any GM at all. They don't have to be a major part of the story, it just doesn't make sense not to have anyone in charge. I think Teddy Long did a great job of that.

If they want to boost ratings. Just have Austin come back and be the "boss". He doesn't even need to be there live every Monday or Friday. If they can waste money on signing Lana and Shelton to long term contracts, Vince can sure as hell give Austin some loose change laying around.

This is exactly what we need. We don't need an ever present McMahon or anyone else. We just need someone who can show up occasionally to make rulings with no bias for heel or babyface. Could easily work. I think the shows feel naked without a GM because they're a completely unnecessary 3 ing hours.

William Regal is a perfect example of doing the GM role the right way. Very little TV time and very few promos. He's there for story purposes only and it works. Triple H is another example really. We all know he's in charge of NXT. They don't hide it. But he's only on TV when it makes sense. Like giving an award or a trophy.
Reasons I'd like a GM/Authority figure to return...
1) We could have trades throughout the year. So if RAW wants Baszler for WM, they'd have to sit down with Triple H or Regal and work out a trade of sorts.
2) They could have a talent from RAW, NXT, & SD in a triple threat at WM. And have the "GM" would appoint a talent they feel would give them the winning edge.
3) The draft would make MUCH more sense if someone was actually calling the shots like Flair & Vince from the first draft.
4) They could do away with talent making their own matches live on TV. And main events being randomly thrown together at 10:15.

Bring the Bisch back for RAW: Big Johnny for SmackDown: Bit of a controversial take these days but I'm on board. Always liked both these guys in their roles.

I love the thought of having a person in charge again. My only gripe is that I just feel like the main roster has a fetish about making them the main focus of the shows. They can't seem to stay away from that. I think William Regal on NXT is the best example of having an authority figure that DOESN'T get in the way at all. He is there when need be, and the matches that are being made logically make sense because we know that there is someone behind them, making the decisions. Plus he has been the GM of NXT for how long now in storyline? So that shows that it works for long periods of time. That is just my take on it.

You absolutely do not need an authority figure. Raw has been the best it’s been in years, and what’s missing? An authority figure. That pretty much tells you all you need to know about having one on tv. Why would you? AEW doesn’t do it. NJPW doesn’t. Having a GM or commissioner does absolutely nothing to progress the show. Give it a rest.

When Corbin threw that guy out of the production truck, the lack of Authority really showed. It would've been so much better if there was a segment where a GM reprimand him for his actions. Instead it was just announced the following week that he would miss the show as a punishment. Definitely not the same without an on air boss laying the law.

But I think it just makes Corbin weak. An authority figure laying down the law for every infraction really handcuffs you. Corbin can't get over as a heel if he's suspended for trying to be a heel. I actually found that decision quite baffling. In that scenario the only one who gets over is the authority figure. It also creates inconsistency when Shayna is free to bite people's necks but don't you dare touch a fan or production team member. If you don't want Corbin to wrestle, have him not show up like an bunghole. I would like to see an authority figure show up now and then, to make big matches or settle disputes. I do not want them coming in to yell at the wrestlers for not playing nice, Stephanie McMahon style.

Yeah I miss the authority roles I don't mean they need to be there every week but it'd make sense to have someone kayfabe wise running the show and booking matches who pops up to make matches and settle disputes
I'd say bring in MVP for raw he can do sparodic appearances and his office is a back stage vip lounge. They can even shoot segments and play them non live have him "refuse" to come to the ring in front of the non VIPs stick a door man outside his "office door" and refuse people entry.
And bring back paige for smack down just cause she wasn't bad.

God no. Authority figures are probably my least favorite thing in all of wrestling. Keep them away.
