Other than the Austin vs Bret match which was amazing and in my top 5 of favorite mania matches, wasn’t this show pretty bad? As a matter of fact, Austin vs Bret saves this show from being horrible. Main event sucked, IC title match sucked, and there was a lot of other filler on this show. Plus like wrestlemania 11, it didn’t really have the aura of a special event. Thoughts on WM 13?

Bret vs Austin, The Chicago street fight and Taker finally regaining the World Title after over 5 years are my highlights.Plus he came out in his classic grey attire so that's another plus.

Yeah, it was not a great WM for sure, the WWF was transitioning into the attitude era and a lot of guys had yet to find their niche. The Rock was still Rocky Maivia, Triple H was still in the "Connecticut blue blood" gimmick (though nearing its end), Mankind and Vader were kind of in-between heel and babyface at the time. To be honest, the only thing the WWF had going for itself at this time was the Bret/Austin feud. I would say by the end of the summer and beginning of the fall of 1997 they started to turn things around. But that run from mid-1996 to mid-1997 was a rough year for fans watching it.

I remember hearing rumours of Bret vs. HBK in a ladder match for the WWE Title at that Mania, did anyone else remember hearing this?? Like I legit remember hearing it back in 1997, but when HBK got injured they switched it to Bret vs. Austin.

I'm not certain about the ladder match, but guys have confirmed the Bret/HBK rematch. Funny to think about though that the 2 biggest events that propelled Austin's career were both backup plans. The King of the Ring win due to the curtain call and this because of HBKs "injury". Austin was on his way by this point probably but this match cemented it.

I think it is one of the weakest WrestleManias once you remove Bret/Austin.
The street fight was hardcore for the time and seeing Taker regain the World title was great, but it was an otherwise uninspiring show. It took another few months for the company to gain some momentum and blast off into the Attitude Era.

On the topic of Rocky/Sultan, I remember them teasing a feud between Rock and Marc Mero on Shotgun in early 97 with Mero possibly going heel. If Mero stayed healthy he would've made a more ideal challenger for the belt at this Mania.

Yeah WM13 is weak sauce outside of Bret vs Austin.
The plan was 100% for HBK to drop the belt to Bret @ WM. Then Shawn "lost his smile" and took some time off....Good God that promo is absolutely awful.
Upside we got Bret vs Austin kicking into full swing and the absolutely brilliant Final 4 main Event with bret vs Austin vs Vader vs UT
Cracking

And, I really think the Austin/Bret feud that continued afterwards really helped the WWF at the time. The WWF was pretty poor from Mid-96 to around this time, the Bret/Austin feud really started to get things rolling towards a better product.

Too bad Bret and Shawn couldn't get along, I think a Hart Foundation (Bret, Owen, Davey, Anvil) vs. D-X (Shawn, HHH, Road Dogg, Gunn) would have been great, and could have been a great secondary feud behind the Austin/McMahon feud.

It could...but we wouldn't have had Austin vs McMahon without the screwjob.

Looking back imagine if Bret and HBK wanted to play together, the things they could have done.
They could have easily joined forces as a heel team, almost having The Hart Foundation and DX together to stop Stone Cold. Hell, Mr. McMahon could still be created even without the screw job if they just played up that HBK and Bret were Vince's hand picked guys, not Stone Cold!
Bret and HBK could have been that eras version of the Two Man Power Trip was in 2001 with Austin and Triple H. But sadly both HBK and Bret were marks for themselves and felt they both needed the WWE Title. I think making millions of dollars would have been better but to each their own!

This show gets a D from me. Take away Austin vs Bret and it’s a solid F.
