AEW Revolution Thread: 2/29/2020 - TONIGHT!

I did see Omega/PAC - that was excellent.

So wacky Ambrose has been taking beatdowns and wrestling with one eye for no reason other than to remove an eyepatch at a point when he already had Jericho beat. It's fun in the usual hokey, wacky Ambrose way, I guess, but it's so far away from the "REAL SPORTS FEEL" promises.

Decent show. Tag match was superb.

Was not a fan of Goldust forcing himself on Swagger's wife.

I think putting the title on Mox in their first match was a great move. I think a lot of people expected Jericho to walk out with the title due to schenanigans, and for Mox to win it in their next bout. Having Mox win the title while he is still hot is a nice change of pace from the WWE failing to capitalize on their stars while at their peak momentum.

They will for sure have a rematch, but I’d be surprised if Jericho takes the title back. He’s been putting Mox over big on his social media and they view him as an anchor for the company. Jericho was a great initial champ, and he will still hang around the main event for a bit, but I don’t think he’ll be winning the title again.

If anything I can see MJF eventually taking the title off of Mox. He reminds me a lot of a young Orton in that he just oozes heel-charisma, and he’s knocking his role out of the park. Omega and PAC will eventually re-enter the main event as well, and Cody and Jericho are always hanging around that level as well with Hangman not far behind. I’m excited with where Mox’s title reign can go.

I actually agree with both your critiques. eyepatch reveal was silly, if anything he should’ve just done that at the beginning of the match. and the kiss was like what a face would do for a pop in 1998...

Holy .... I didn't get to watch it live, I was coaching all weekend, and after a second straight 14 day at the track (which went during the event) I was way too gassed to watch a replay that evening so I watched it tonight.

Hangman/Kenny vs. the Bucks.. I agree with uncle Dave. That was my favourite tag team match of all time, and clear MOTN for me on an amazing show. That didn't feel like finisher spam at all to me. Zero successful one winged angel's from Kenny (and Page doing it was absolutely amazing), Zero successful Meltzer Drivers in the ring. Lots of near falls, but near falls aren't spam finishes. NXT feels like constant finisher spam to me, and it drives me nuts, but this match didn't feel like it. (Though 1000000% the Bucks have historically been really bad for finisher spam type matches, as much as I love them. I just think this wasn't an example of that).

About 20 minutes into the match when a rest spot came, I had a moment where I paused in my head and went "holy crap, this might be the best thing I've ever seen in pro wrestling". For everyone that craps on the bucks for not being able to tell a story, that was one goddamn hell of a story. Having lots of spots =/= spot fest. This was a ton of spots, but far from a spot fest.

I don't want to derail it, but Uncle Dave has crapped on AEW plenty, and honestly probably more than Alvarez. If you were to call him a shill for anything, it'd be NJPW by a longshot, and I love me some NJPW.


I'm torn on the eyepatch reveal. So watching Mox both here, and in NJPW, it's been clear the bloody eye patch never stayed in place. Like ever. The amount of matches it shifted around were insane. Sometimes he had it taped, but later on he didn't have it taped. If they were aware it wouldn't hold, and actually made a conscious effort to eventually remove the tape underneath to set this up, then bravo, 100% approve. If that was all a coincidence and it was just "hey LOL eyepatch fakeout" then yeah, kinda lame. It was pretty clear from the beginning spike this was the eventual finish though, so I would tend to think they legit had that foresight. 

Literally the only negative part of that show for me was the kiss. I get the Goldust throwbacks he likes to do, but in 2020 that seemed really poor. Shame because I actually really enjoyed the rest of the match for what it was. Hardly a 5* classic, but a solid opener, and if you had told me I would have enjoyed watching Goldust Vs. Jack Swagger in 2020, I'd have called you crazy.

OC Vs. PAC was exactly what I expected it to be, and I couldn't be happier about that. The king of sloth style forges on, and the bastard begins to realize he may have underestimated the AEW roster.

Honestly, my favourite PPV of all time. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, every match mattered, the order of the matches was spot on, I can't complain at all. AEW helped me through such a tough time in my life, and I'm well aware that the timing of things starting to turn around for both me and my wife and this PPv happening may sync up a litle too much for me to be at all unbiased, but I'm not a reporter, it really doesn't matter if I have a bias. I'm a fan, I'm supposed to have an effing bias, that's why we cheer for our favourite sports teams with paper bags over our heads at times. For me, the timing of everything, the people involved, my favourite thing I've ever seen in my 26 years of watching pro wrestling.

The tag match was off the ing charts. The storytelling was incredible if you've been following along. Matt went crazy and loses Kenny along the way and that makes the moment at the end feel like a big deal. Then you have Hangman flirting with the Buckshot when Kenny is turned around. I thought Kenny broke his neck on that reverse hurricanrana from the turnbuckle. But that last ten minutes where it felt like it could end at any move was just magic imo. Hangman has gotten so damn over from this story.

My second favorite match was Darby vs Sammy. The car crash style really worked for those two. Allin bombarding him right out of the gate was the way to go. It all felt like I couldn't catch my breath, in a good way. That 630 onto the table was crazy.

OC vs PAC was about what I expected and I enjoyed the hell out of it. PAC even playing along early had its appeal, and then we got to see OC really work. Which I'm sure caught people off guard who have never seen it. Dude is talented and mega over and I can't wait to see him vs Colt in AEW.

Good with Mox winning. Felt like time. That story built to where it needed to go. I hope both guys move in different directions. Revisit it some other time. Had no issue with the eye patch moment. Those are the moments that make wrestling, wrestling. You don't watch a telenovela and then get mad when the "twin sister" shows up. That's how wrestling stories work. Also, we've seen plenty of heroes in comic books, or other mediums, disguise their abilities until an opportune moment to take down their enemy.

Thought Cody and MJF was bloated and overdone. From Cody's entrance, which took away from his fire that should have existed towards MJF, to the stuff on the outside. It just didn't work for me. Cody is a very good worker, but he turns 15 minute matches into 30 minute matches, a lot. If he's out there with Omega, fine, but he was out there with MJF who works a similar style. It took a lot of gaga horsesh*t for them to get through that match and there was no conclusion for Cody.

Really good show and I like where things are pointed coming off most of those matches.
