www.pwinsider.com/ViewArticle.php?id=134589After the setup on WWE Backstage last night that teased the deal, WWE has officially signed former Patriot TE Rob Gronkowski to an active wrestling role. He is expected to make appearance on the March 20 Smackdown!, and take up his first match sometime after the scheduled Wrestlemania date.

Fair enough. Tonnes of athletes from various sporting backgrounds have crossed over to wrestling and done well. He deserves a fair crack just like anyone else imo.

I hate seeing professional athletes get signed to WWE without having to bust their ass in wrestling for years. If everyone else has to, they should as well. The average person who wants to be a professional wrestler has to start at the lowest of the low. NFL players and UFC fighters shouldn't get a fast pass to the big time. If a wrestler with little experience does get signed to a WWE contract, they are in the performance center for months or years. They wrestle on the undercard at NXT house shows. They pray to god they get to be on NXT TV. Then a couple of years later they get on the main roster.

Idealistically, that's wonderful, but the WWE is a publicly traded business operating in an industry that has its roots in carnival and circus fare. Crossover athletes are featured attractions and translate into fistfuls of cash. You can get away, to an extent, with relegating a Kurt Angle, a Mark Henry, or even a Brock Lesnar at the jump to a developmental system based on the relative weight of their names at the time, but the salary demands of a Rob Gronkowski, a Ronda Rousey, or an eventual Conor McGregor are going to necessitate an immediate return on investment. Anyone who thought that Vince was going to sign Ronda Rousey and then ship her down to the PC to work the Florida house show loop for six months to a year is only kidding themselves. She's a household name with the capacity to get eyes on the product that otherwise wouldn't have given a second glance. Same with Rob Gronkowski, and Conor McGregor, should he ever choose to make the jump. Paying dues is great, but it doesn't translate into cash in Vince's pocket.

I would just make him an analyst for Fox. Smart move really. Until he’s trained and then maybe he’ll do a match or 2.

Why does Gronk get a free pass to the main roster? Isn't this what NXT is for? I don't think Gronk is going to boost the ratings. Maybe Vince want's the Fox football audience.

Just his incessant, insatiable desire for mainstream attention. Though Gronk in NXT would maybe peak some more interest and boost their ratings. And part of the reason this story was "broken" on Backstage last night was to give FOX Sports a jump on it, so Vince is reaching for any NFL fans he can.

The same reason AJ Styles did? The two may come from different worlds, but at the end of the day, they have a huge established fan base and worked extremely hard in the paths they took. That’s just the way it all works, I’m not saying it’s right but that’s how it is. If Gronk can bring in viewers, they’re gonna jump right on it and throw him into the main roster.

LOLOL Does this "logic" also extend to other fields of entertainment - is The Rock allowed to keep his fast pass to big Hollywood movies, or does he have to go pay his dues in student films before you'll accept him as an actor?

Maybe Vince want's the Fox football audience. Vince, wants an audience, period. Anybody brought from outside the wrestling world, with any name recognition, will be given a push.

I'll give him the same chance I give any wrestler but the guy is such a goof it's probably gonna' be tough even for a diehard Patriots fan like me.

I'm not really familiar with him. I don't watch football, I only know him as Mojo's friend. Obviously they have a star there in him, easy main eventer if they can get him trained well enough.
