I'm curious to know if anyone has implemented collecting rules for themselves?
I originally stopped collecting back in 2007. At the time I was collecting the rookie figure of each wrestler and if I bought a newer version of someone, they had to be in wrestling gear (not street gear.)
Now that I've stepped back into collecting, I've changed my rules, since I have a wife, daughter, and mortgage. Thanks to the checklist thread here on the boards, I went through Mattel's complete Elite history and here's what I've come up with:
- Loose collection.
- Elites only, unless Retros return.
- I've only chosen wrestlers that I was/am a fan of. Legends or modern day included.
- I've chosen my favorite release of that superstar as my top want, and will only have one figure of theirs. If another release comes along that I like better, one of them will need to go.
-Being my favorite wrestler, Shawn Michaels is the exception to the 1 figure rule. I am going to limit him to 3-5.
-If my Elite collection cannot fit within 2 Detolfs, cuts have to be made and figures will be sold. This is how I plan on controlling my quantity. My current buying wish list is sitting under 80, so I still have room to grow going forward.
I would be interested in hearing your rules, if you have any. I've spent a lot of time thinking about it, but a rule of yours might be something I haven't thought of. This quarantine has given me a lot of time to plan and think!

Keep them dry and dont feed them after midnight. Obviously.
No rules. Embrace the chaos.

My only rules are... 1. I only buy the wrestlers/gimmick/figures I like. If I didn’t/don’t find them entertaining in real life then I don’t need them on my shelves.
2. I preorder any figures I really need to have from RSC or Amazon. And anything else I will find locally at mass retail. If I didn’t preorder it and can’t find it at mass retail then I just won’t get it, because if it wasn’t something that I preordered then it really wasn’t a figure that was that important to me to begin with. (That said there’s never been a figure I haven’t seen at least once at retail)
That is pretty much it.

Not sure about 'rules' but I started collecting to grab one of each figure of one specific wrestler. Now that I have all of those (for now) I'm contemplating adding a second name to that list, which would only necessitate adding two more figures (for now).
I love poking around here and seeing photos of collections because it amazes me that people have been collecting for 10+ years, where I have been a wrestling fan for decades and never once thought about collecting the toys I played with as a child.
Enjoy!

My only rule is no basics except minis and pre B76 women; I also cherry pick basic announcers and managers. I’m slowly starting to buy ToyBiz stuff. So far I’ve limited myself to just TNA because it’s all uniform but I’m worried I’m gonna cave and start buying WCW stuff.

Elites, MOC.
I get what/who I want, rather simple. I’ll take every Rollins over one Billie Kay or Peyton Royce any day.

My rules are: * At least one of everyone made. * $ budget per month to spend (which sometimes results in finding figs cheaper later, or more expensive. Basically evens out) * multiple attires only from attitude era and back. As I'm not as keen on current roster these days. * New rule enacted a few years back, no basics unless its the only version of someone.
I have over 400 figs... so i'm hoping it helps curb the quantity.

I don’t understand having one of a person. How could you not want all the Macho Man colors or Undertakers different eras or show the progression of someone like Daniel Bryan. JBL and APA Bradshaw are pretty different. Papa Shango and Godfather. Can’t fathom. Then again I have entirely too many figures....

I don't buy figures of people I'm not a fan of.
I don't buy basics unless it's for a headswap or for someone who isn't getting an elite anytime soon (eg, Zelina Vega).
RSC or Amazon are my last resorts.
I don't buy anything with the intention of making a profit later. I will get items for trade bait, but not for gouging people.

-- Elites only.
-- For the modern roster, try to limit to only one per character. If a better one comes out, I sell the old one.
-- For Legends, I buy pretty much all elites, so I have a bunch of different attires there (but am starting slow down a bit on that).
-- For the upcoming AEW line I'm going to be a total completist.
Rules are definitely helpful, IMO. I do this with all sorts of lines (one of every character/completist/one era only, etc.). I tend to overbuy as it is so the more rules the better lol.

I have many rules, and they go in order of significance. (Ex. Rule 1 trumps Rule 2, Rule 2 over Rule 3, and so on)
Rule 1: Buy as many different Shane O Mac figures as I can get my hands on Rule 2: Mattel only, except in cases where a Mattel figure is unlikely to ever be made Rule 3a: Collect as many different women as possible Rule 3b: Only collect men I have specific interest in Rule 4a: I can update figures if something more relevant comes along Rule 4b: One figure per person, unless there's something significant about the attire Rule 5: Generally avoid brand-themed attire Rule 6: Aim for figures that include entrance gear Rule 7: Elite style figures only unless the only figure available is a basic
That about covers it. Although it should be noted that there is a Rule 0 that trumps everything on this list titled "Buy what you like", so there's that.

JBL and APA Bradshaw are pretty different. Papa Shango and Godfather. Can’t fathom. Then again I have entirely too many figures.... Well, honestly, figures are expensive. I just noticed that Elites have gone up to 20 bucks here at walmart. If a person were to buy even ten elites, that's 200 dollars. Factor in multiple series per year and yeah, many people just don't have enough money to buy all the figures they might want, let alone all the figures for everyone. Some people are poor, my man. As for the difference between JBL/Bradshaw and Shango/Godfather - it depends on if you are the type of person to see those as different people or not. If I collected male figures, I'd probably go for both in each of those cases. Papa Shango is definitely not the same as Godfather, even if they are both the same wrestler. If I had the desire and money, I could easily see getting both. But that's just me.

I’ve had to cut back but this hobby itself is a weird form of OCD so good on people being able to collect despite not having every CM Punk elite or every Kane attire, but then again I don’t have the same desire as a lot of people to have one of EVERYONE. There’s just some characters I couldn’t care less about even if they were champs or whatever. (Jinder, Greg Valentine, etc)

I used to get a basic version of everyone in NXT from 2014>
Now they all get elites so I skip some here and there.
Rest of collection is tons of Bryan, Punk, HBK, HHH, Savage, Sting, Kane, Taker, Bayley, AJ, Finn, and assorted everything else.

I don’t really have any rules per say. I just strictly collect only 96-98 era. I can have as many as I want, and as many of the same character as I want if it fits in that time period.

Flashbacks or nxt only. I try and cut off around mania 20, but I have a few things after. I was running out of room in my detolfs but after all this madness ends my wife has a great idea to re organize and get a few more in.
That said the slow rate flashbacks release and even slower rate they become available to me in Australia I’ve added a few other small collections.
I am getting neca movie turtles, storm mortal kombat and a couple of other things I like. I also have about 1/3 of the hasbros stored away I may slowly complete.
