Looking back at his WWF run and how amazing the beginning of it was with him winning the IC belt at SSlam 90 to a HUGE pop makes me wonder how his career there would've went if he had his life going on the right track.
I doubt he would've had the success like he had in WCCW but I could've seen him definitely having another run as IC champ and at the very least being a contender for the World Title. Crazy to think he was only 33 when he passed. So much potential looking back in retrospect.
He also had a great theme song during this time as well.

Kerry Von Erich was so cool. Why did he have to kill himself? (I know why, but I really wish he hadnt)

I don't think that he would have fit in very well in the 90s even without the drug problems. He was a superhero type wrestler even before going to WWF and that was becoming and increasingly difficult sell.

Wouldn't be be spending multiple years in prison if he didn't kill himself??
I think Kerry was doomed one way or another where his wrestling career was concerned.

Curt Hennig is in my top 5 of all time list but I remember not being disappointed he dropped the belt to Kerry on that night in Philly.
Moments like this is what makes me love old school wrestling. So honored to have grown up during it's glory days. What a time to be a fan!!

He was one of my heroes as a kid. Despite having such a short run in the WWF he really made an impression on me as a child, I thought he was so cool. I saw him live at my first show in 1991 and it was one of if not the biggest highlight of the show for me. Really sad the way his life turned out, the whole family tragedy actually is just super sad. 33 is no age at all for a person to pass away. Great write up as always, I am actually going to do a piece on him myself at some point

Did he have any matches on TV before Summer Slam? It really surprises me that Vince McMahon had him beat Mr. Perfect since Kerry was so new to WWF but I guess he had big plans for him and Mr. Perfect was such a team player that he didn't mind losing. I also wonder why the switch was made so soon to go back to Mr. Perfect with the belt. I think at that point it may have had less to do with Kerry's issues than it did with it probably worked better for shows at the time for a face (Bulldog, Bossman) to be chasing the title rather than win. Kerry did have a short TV or house show feud with Ted Dibiase but he was in between Dusty and Virgil so Kerry would not be able to have a PPV match with him. WrestleMania probably showed that there was nothing more that could be done with him and every PPV after that he was really just an extra to make up the numbers. It's definitely sad what happened to the family but especially Kerry.

Simply amazing how he did all that and with only one foot. If he would have been able to get clean, I think he would have stayed mid-carder at best. Eventually going to WCW and getting a small push there while getting lost in the shuffle soon after that. He would job out like Chris Adams did when he was in WCW. Kerry was not good on the mic and I think that would have hindered him quite a bit.

The feud with Dibiase in late 90 is another odd one considering DiBiase was feuding with the Rhodes during that time.Surpised they didn't at least have a TV match together. From a kayfabe standpoint it made no sense for Tornado to not get revenge after he lost the belt thanks to him.

Didn't they have one match in mid 1991, wasn't it on UK Rampage 91?

It would have helped Kerry and furthered the feud between Virgil and DiBiase.

Unfortunately KVE was a complete mess coming to WWF. Vince considered a few guys to replace Brutus but settled on KVE because of his pedigree. Soon though all hands backstage seen Kerry was not the guy for the job. By all reports Vince couldn't wait to get the belt off him and back to Hennig.
ironically he would find himself in the same boat 2 years later with Davey Boy Smith.

Kerry Von Erich seemed very popular with the WWF crowd, but there is a difference between being cheered and actually having a connection with the audience.
His character just didn't have enough meat on the bones to persevere in an era when the roster was absolutely loaded with so much Hall of Fame talent. The physical limitations surely hurt Kerry, although not to the extent of the damage his personal demons caused, but he was not very good on the mic during a time when pro wrestling was all about loud, over-the-top personas who oozed charisma. KVE definitely had his own unique charisma for sure just not the kind that would propel him to the very top of the WWF in 1990/1991.
Vince probably knew that whether or not he held the title for long, winning the Intercontinental championship almost immediately on a high-profile card would give him a huge boost out of the gate which it did. The rest of his WWF run can probably be chalked up to his ongoing personal/physical issues catching up with him combined with Vince just becoming disinterested in the character.
Even if he was cleaned up and 100% healthy, that would have been a challenging time to climb the main event ranks. However, Kerry was in a very dark place in those days which only accelerated his own downward spiral.

As a kid I couldn't understand his push. I thought he was a really limited wrestler. I didn't like him beating Mr Perfect

Is there really footage of his prosthetic leg coming out during a match? I heard my classmates talking about it as a kid.

Agreed, though I wrote a diary on him on Wrestling Sims where he is introduced as a heel "Dark Warrior" as a supervillain to the Ultimate Warrior

Looking back on Tornado/Bravo from WM VII, it's crazy to see where both were in 90 then to see em here in 91. From Kerry winning the belt at his 1st WWF PPV and Bravo being involved in the big Hogan/Quake feud.
Talk about a drop.
