You are right, open figures don't take up that much space. The hate on basics around here is over the top. If the figure is simply going to stand on a shelf then basics work just fine. Judging by the majority of the pictures I see around here, that seems to be what most people do.
If you really want to downsize, I wouldn't just dump basics. Let go of the figures that are really similar to others in your collection.

An hobby is a passion you can manage. An addiction is a passion you cannot. When I almost lost my house earlier this year, the first thing to go were figures I could live without. I didn't end up in that situation because of my collection, but when essentials are at risk then nonessentials must evaluated and sacrificed. My wish for you is that you're financially safe in conjunction with enjoying your life. We probably disagree about a lot of things, but as a person you deserve to be happy and safe. And if that means having some wrestlers where you want to capture different versions of their likeness and you can manage it, then more power to you. Just wanted to pick out this to respond real quick.... this hobby has not interfered with my financial well being. i havent let it....a ton of the money i've spent on mattels has come from my sale of all my old figures i didnt want anymore. and im not in a position where i need to choose whether to eat or buy that new set of elites that just hit walmart. my collection is important to me, yes...but i am completely at peace with the idea that if, god forbid, anything happened to me where i desperately needed money, they would be the first things to go without hesitation

Every toy collector should watch this video from Toy Galaxy. I rewatch this every time I consider getting into or getting out of a toy line.

At this point, I'm considering selling my basics. The only ones I'd keep are Nexus, Savages, and any ones that never got an Elite. Some have sentimental value too, but I have so many.

Good thread... I am also home by choice, and I have noticed the same thing. I bought A LOT of basics up until the articulation change. At this point in the game, I'd say keep essential versions that represent the proper gimmick/time frame of someone.

For me my hobby helps me want to stay alive so I just worry about other collectors. No offense intended.

Before you make your decision, can you take a pic of the colection?? Will the whole collection fit in one pic?? As for what to do... Do some kind of contest on here, and have the prize be a random basic. Donate them to all different Good Will locations and thrift stores. Give one away to a random kid you see each day for the next year or so. If you have kids, give them the basics. Make customs. Job them out to the Elite, the the Elite. Listen to this guy, he has the right idea. You have a crazy amount of figures, but dont make it a sad moment, make it something fun or fulfilling. Where you keep the ones you never want to get rid of (like regret if you were ever to lose them). The others you release by using kingpartick's ideas. A win, win for you and the next person who adopts your figures. A nice new home 😁

Why not make videos on your YouTube channel dedicated to your basic figures? I'd definitely view it. There's something special about the original basics to me especially now that they're re-tooled for the worst.

I would only keep one for each wrestler but keep 1 for each gimmick change or faction. Only 1 Shield Rollins and post shield Rollins. Pick your favorite attire or sculpt. So yellow Hogan pick only tights or shirt get rid of the other one. Keep one older Hulk if you want also.

I'm glad I sold most of my Basics and RA figures about four years ago when USPS prices were a little more favorable. Even then, most figures were only getting me about $2 or $3 back after shipping and fees. Toward the end of my Ruthless Aggression liquidation, I removed the heads and tossed the bodies in trash because it wasn't worth the time and effort to sell or the space to store them.
