Man what a bummer looking back 30 years later. I remember he was there for the build to SSlam and was gone just days before it. I can imagine the announce team was gonna be him and Vince which would've been great considering they never called a PPV together before.Also makes you wonder what they would've did with Piper if Jesse stayed.
Big loss to the company during that time for sure. |

It's kind of funny too because for those with the SummerSlam anthology box set, there is not one SummerSlam that has Ventura and Monsoon together. 1988 has Monsoon and Billy Graham, and 1989 has Schiavone and Ventura. Then 1990 we had Vinnie Mac and Piper, and 1991 with Monsoon, Piper and Heenan.
The last PPV with Monsoon and Ventura was Wrestlemania VI. It is weird, cause even in 1990 I was only 9 years old, but something just didn't feel right without Jesse Ventura calling a PPV or an SNME show.
I remember too how much I enjoyed Ventura with Schiavone in WCW in 1993 for their PPV commentary, but found SummerSlam 89 and Royal Rumble 90 to be kind of weird with them doing commentary. Probably because I was so used to Jesse and Gorilla together.

I believe Gorilla was supposed to do commentary at SSlam 89/90 and Rumble 90 but had to back out due to health issues.
It is a shame we never got a SSlam with Gorilla/Jesse in the booth.If he stayed past 90 I gotta think we would've finally got em together at the 91 event.Bobby was gold during the Savage/Liz wedding I can only imagine Jesse's comments lol.

as a kid watching coliseum videos i hated jesse. but that was why he was gold. he wasn't happy with his wcw run because he felt both jr and schiavone didn't know how to work with his style but i still found him to be hilarious.

Easily the worst part of Summerslam 90 was Piper on commentary. Brutal.
Heenan was terrific but to me he still paled in comparison to Jesse. Heenan was more comedic in his role but Jesse really made everything feel bigger and more important.

Jesse was great. Too bad he didn't stay around a little longer, I think he would have been gold on the mic during Warrior's title run. But, I guess it all worked out well since him leaving eventually got us Heenan and Monsoon.

Easily the worst part of Summerslam 90 was Piper on commentary. Brutal. Definitely. He always seemed to be in "get myself over" mode and his reactions to face moves or faces winning were just way too over the top. He had no middle ground either. He either tried to go way to hard on getting the face over or he completely buried the face or ignored how good they were. His "attempts" at comedy were pretty awful too. He is a lot like a Superstar Billy Graham in how good they were to be able to get themselves over but their commentary wasn't good enough. I did really enjoy Superstar's commentary though I know a lot of others didn't. He was much better than Piper to me. |

I didn't mind Piper in the booth. In the beginning I was skeptical but I thought he did a fair job looking back especially with Gorilla at SSeries 90 and Rumble 91.Him bickering with Heenan with all their history together at SSlam 91 was great.It would've been ideal if he had more of his classic heel persona though.He showed little signs of it at SSlam 90 but for the most part he was babyface.
Back to Jesse, I can imagine him putting over Taker strong in his debut.He was great at that especially new guys like Zeus and Quake in 89.He was all around just excellent in the heel color role. Him ripping the faces was gold and he had good logic as well.
*Warrior hits Rude with belt at SSlam 89* Jesse- ''Hey ref that's a DQ!'' Tony- ''They're outside the ring'' Jesse-''You mean to tell me you can shoot somebody outside the ring as long as it's outside the ring?!''

As much though as it sucks that Jesse Ventura left the WWE then, I loved his WCW work 1992 and 1993. I know he had some matches he called on the 1994 PPVs when he and Heenan would swap out, but when I look back at Paul E. Dangerously and the Dangerous Alliance run in 1992, I couldn't imagine anyone but Ventura calling those moments.

Jesse and gorilla were so great together.
I hated piper commentating especially with Vince. I didn’t like Graham commentating either.
Heenan was excellent. And I liked schiavone in wcw

Props to him for never losing a step when he went to WCW even after being away for a good year and a half.
Him putting over Rude felt like old times.I also gotta mention him putting over the Philly crowd for cheering the heels at Havoc 92 haha.

I'm surprised Vince McMahon put up with Roddy Piper on commentary as long as he had. As I think more about his commentary it was like taking a figurative "dump" right on the wrestlers. I'm shocked he didn't kill the Undertaker gimmick before it even started. And Roddy's first match on PPV commentary with the Rockers v. Power & Glory he crapped all over the Rockers saying those guys were just up partying and couldn't keep up when obviously Vince McMahon wanted to put over a certain storyline in the match with the Michael's injury.
I clicked on a shoot segment about Piper talking about Snuka, last night, and skipped around a bit before finally clicked it off because what ever he was saying wasn't real words in any language. It was like Frank Caliendo's impersonation of Al Pacino in the "Ooh Ah" movie or however it goes. And I do appreciate Roddy Piper the wrestler and the family man, just not a fan of the commentary.
I also think that some PPVs in the early 90s really lacked the importance of the last few years because they lacked both Jesse and Gorilla or just Jesse. Even if just Tony and Jesse, the show still felt awesome.

I thought Jesse was great in the booth, especially with Gorilla. Jesse & Vince did very well together too. Jesse, Heenan & Lawler are my favorite all time commentators. Those guys were superb. Piper & Savage weren't good at all in the booth. Those guys were great performers especially Randy, but they weren't meant for the broadcast booth IMO.

No offense to anyone who replaced him, but ppv commentary was not the same without Jesse. To me, he and Gorilla were the best combination. Better than King and JR. Yes I said it!

They definitely weren't in Ventura, Heenan, or Monsoon's league, but I actually enjoyed Savage on the commentary, especially when it was He, JR, and Heenan - I thought they worked well together. Piper wasn't very good at the start but I think he got a little better as time went on. I liked the Summer Slam 1991 team of Monsoon, Heenan, and Piper. Ventura seemed to be the perfect person for color commentary, he worked so well playing the heel against Monsoon and Vince's baby face commentary - as they say in other sports, it's like he invented the position (heel commentator). |

Loved Ventura in WWF. Hated him in wCw. He did well in the beginning of his wCw venture, but towards the end I could not stand him. And actually muted the tv.

I always liked how articulate he was in speaking. Even for a bad guy.
His shoot interviews are pretty good.
