Ok, so I've used the same lacquer for years (Testors), but now all of a sudden its causing this ugly cracking. It's getting frustrating because it's the finishing touch on otherwise nice projects. It's happening mostly with my black and reds. I have a brush-on gloss varnish I could use...would it protect the paint job if i applied that first? Or just stick with the brush-on only with these? Any advice is welcomed. Thanks!

If they’re not being handled a lot after finishing and basically being used for display purposes, I’ve been finding that brushing on a nice layer of Mod Podge has been doing the trick for my customs. I’ve also got the spray lacquer from Testors but I haven’t noticed any paint cracking on the ones I’ve tried it on. I do tend to go for the matte finish as opposed to the gloss though that should t really make much of a difference.

I use spray acrylic and have zero problems (aside from that one time I got the figure too close to the nozzle and now she's shiny).
I tried brushing on sealer, but I have too many problems with brush strokes.

So, from what I've read, the cracking could happen due to too much water in the paint. I do thin it a bit to give the coat a better look. I do several light coats, and dont glob it on. Another reason is because the outer coat is more dry than the inner coat.
