So I recently got my own place and now I finally have the itch to start collecting again.
I was an avid collector back when Mattel originally got the licence but my last set was Elite 8 and I believe that was released in 2011... so yeah, I have literally 9+ years of figures to catch up on.
But thats the fun part! Because instead of waiting for new figures to come out, I also have the thrill of finding old ones.
My aim is to get at least one of everybody. And multiple of some if they have distinctive gimmicks/attires... for example, I'll probably need about 10 Undertaker's (ABA, Big Evil, Current, Debut, Purple 90s, Ministry, Late 90s, BatTaker, etc)... You get the idea. But I ONLY want Elites... I will buy Basics if a wrestler only has had a Basic or if I want to do a headswap.
So my question is... where do I start? Do I get the big names out of the way first? Or do I go for the figures I think look coolest?
For me, I think it makes more sense if I get the big names first. So that would be -
Defining Moments Hogan A couple of Cena's (I think the Rise Above Hate one is still the best) A couple of Rocks The Austin that came with all the titles A couple different HBKs and HHHs
Is there a checklist available anywhere so I can see whats been released and then make my choices? I plan on creating a Spreadsheet for this and ticking them off whenever I purchase them.
Also, where would be the cheapest bet? I've been looking on Facebook and I see some deals here. I can only imagine the Classifields here wouldn't be one for many bargains as everyone on this board would know the value of the figures, right?
Thanks.

I sold everything I had. I have been collecting since late 2011 through basically E74
The only wrestling figure I kept was Storm Hulk Rules Hogan and E62 Stinger and 1st DM Flair
Then preorders came up for Legends the other day. Ordered all 3 of them 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Just be patient. They keep improving the figures they put out is my advice to you. Don’t go spend a ton on older releases

If there’s a lot you’re going for, the best thing is not to have an order but just to buy one when you find a deal. The classifieds here are usually reasonable for costs because collectors aren’t trying to take advantage of collectors but there’s not a ton of options. eBay is good. Check in frequently and there’s usually someone trying to sell something cheaper than everyone else. By the time you get to the ones you never find deals on,.. sometimes you will hear rumblings that there’s a new figure coming or rerelease of those characters.
I’m not gonna lie...you’re gonna see something you just gotta have and it’s gonna hit the old wallet

As someone who lost their entire collection and recently decided to rebuild from scratch. I have to say the classifieds board is an invaluable resource. I know you said people know the values so it’d be hard to find bargains, but that’s often untrue. Many collectors here parting with their collections would rather see them in the hands of other collectors who would truly appreciate what they have rather than people looking to flip them for a buck. I’ve gotten countless amazing deals on older figures from my fellow WFigs members.

When you start a collection, start with the prize. Start with the Championship Title Belts.

I recently started collecting again after a long time out. And although I have broken the rule a few times, I try and stick to new releases only. There are just too many figures I would want otherwise and I can’t afford it. That way I still can look forward to reveals and new release, and my purchases are relatively staggered.
I’ve also remember someone else’s great idea of collecting every WWE/World Champion that come with the belt.

If you're looking to have most people represented, I'd suggest looking on ebay for lots. You can probably make a decent dent in some of the lower card guys at a decent price. Other than that, if you're patient you can find a decent price on most figures.
Quite honestly, this might be the absolute worst time to get back into collecting. Prices seem to be at an all time high right now, and I think they'll start to come back to Earth over the next few months as some restrictions are lifted. I'd focus on recent figures that can be had near retail (ie what's available in store or on Ringside) right now, and then turn my attention to some of the older figures you want when prices start to settle.

You should always start from the beginning.
I hope my words of advice helps in any way.

Two things:
1. I've found the easiest way to keep up with everything is to literally keep up with everything current that you want. That way you're paying retail/ringside prices and not crazy high ones later on. So I'd start by grabbing all the newest elites you feel you "need" from ringside from all the most recent series.
2. Honestly I'd probably suggest waiting a few months, as someone else mentioned. People are throwing their stimulus money at figures and there's been a huge spike the last couple of weeks (I usually monitor eBay like crazy). A 1-2-3 Kid Hasbro went for $800 recently. Insanity. Even I think I'm going to take a break from eBay for a little while until it all dies down.

E72 Batista and E74 Goldberg are suddenly $40-$50 on the bay and people are actually paying that!🤑 E72 Roddy and Murphy go for $50-$60. Insane.

And honestly I normally don't follow the Mattel prices as much because I'm mostly all set there and focus on other vintage wrestling lines. But yeah it's ticking me off lol. I was having fun picking off random Jakks Classics over the last couple of months at really great prices and now that's all gone away. Thank god I don't need any more Hasbros or LJNs, it'd be impossible. I wish anyone luck who's getting back out there now because it's gonna be a bumpy ride for at least the near future.

Buy the priciest first if you can afford them. Prices are just going to go up.

Focus on your personal favorites and narrow down to the version or versions you want.

Focus on current stuff coming out. There’s been a severe inflation of secondary market prices since the start of the coronavirus and they’re gonna keep going up until the bubble bursts. There’s only a few people like Snuka & Demolition & LOD that probably won’t be getting new figures within the next few years
