Guy was massively over in 92 but with Hogan, Flair, Warrior, Sid, Macho, he was never gonna get the title and getting fired in laste 92 wasnt helping him But could have have won the title for at least a short time in 95/96? He could have had maybe a 2-3 month reign or did Vince not trust him? From what I've read Davy seemed to be pretty paranoid and always took it hard when he would lose

Jim Cornette just did a thing on this with his podcast. Davy was messed up on drugs that nobody had faith in him basically. While Shawn Michaels was a functioning pill head, Davy was not.

yeah, besides the drugs, I think there was confidence issues with Bulldog that would’ve been apparent had he been champion and had to cut repeated promises. guy wasn’t the best talker and naturally shy.
dynamite by far did the talking for them while in the bulldogs.

I am sure if Davey was WWF Champion, he would have lost it to Shawn Michaels.
Look at that track record...
Bulldog loses IC Title to HBK
Bulldog loses Royal Rumble victory to HBK
Bulldog loses Tag Titles to HBK/Austin
Bulldog loses European Title to HBK
It was a must that he'd lose the WWF Title to HBK if he had it.

I think he was positioned just right in ‘92, but I think he should have had a short reign like you said in ‘95/96. Can’t see where exactly it would have been able to fit in though. Possibly beating Diesel in their IYH match just after his heel turn and then losing it to Bret at Survivor Series ‘95. I’ve never heard about him taking losses hard, in fact I think I’ve read how he was easy to talk into taking a loss. He seemed to take a lot of pin-fall losses in Japan and let Shawn Michaels talk him into losing the Euro title in the UK. The poor guy was pinned by Danny Davis at Mania 3 and even though it was due to cheating or whatever, he was one of the few guys to lose via pin to Col Mustafa and I hated seeing him get pinned by Flair at Survivor Series ‘91 and being the only face on the team to be eliminated like that. He’s my favourite wrestler, but to me his general place in wrestling is as an upper mid carder who can be used as an occasional world title challenger in between a champion’s big feuds.

Yeah definitely his demons. If you recall he was all messed up prior to SSlam 92 to which Bret had to pretty much walk em through it as he forgot what to do.The match turned out great but Vince no doubt lost all faith in em after that.
Shame too as even if it was for a cup of coffee I would've liked to seen him as World Champ as a heel in 95/6.

In Brets book, he hints at Bullgod faking/making his summer 92 injury worse to go on a bender with Neidhart all summer long. He immediately blew up in the Summerslam match and forgot everything they had gone over.

I think jeans Bulldog shoulda gotten a quick week or two long run. Put it on him then immediately take it off just to give him a reign as champ.

I remember thinking for sure he was going to beat Vader for the wcw title in 1993.

I remember thinking for sure he was going to beat Vader for the wcw title in 1993. I was 100% behind Bulldog in his time in WCW and thought it was a matter of time before he got the title. Slamboree ‘93 was a major disappointment.

Davey is in that bucket of guys that hands down would’ve had at least one Thank You reign had he worked in the current era of product presentation but in the era he worked, probably at least fourth or fifth in my list of people that should’ve had a run (Piper, Owen, Perfect, DiBiase)

As much as I love the Bulldog, I just do not see any time when it could have happened over someone else who was champ at the time.
However in the interest of fun I do have a couple of "what ifs"
First one is him taking the title of Shawn Michaels at Beware of Dog and then dropping it back at King of the Ring, but lets face it, no way HBK was going to let his shoulders get pinned during this time!
The other time is in 1999 when he first came back and was part of that six pack challenge match. I think he could have won it then and then dropped it again shortly after.
He was such a great talent and he always came across as a fun loving dude so it is such a shame his life ended the way it did. I saw a picture of his son recently and he has gotten way more jacked so hopefully he can come back to the WWE one day.

He could've had a brief run in 99. Wins the title at Unforgiven and then drops in to HHH in the new year.
It would've been cool seeing him return after 2 years to win the big one.

These 4 guys alone brought more than Davey Boy did. I love Davey don't get me wrong, but he was a great upper midcard and tag team guy and I'm okay with that. Not holding the belt didn't hinder the footprint he left on the business, as well as these 4 guys.

I think He would have if he had behaved himself in 1992 but as it stands? No.
Basically Vince handed him the keys to the castle at Summerslam 1992 and he f*cking blew it. Vince built the event around him, relegated Savage vs Warrior II down the card(HUGE decision for the time) & entrusted the main event of one of his riskiest ventures outside the USA to Smith & Hart. Then Smith turned up pilled out of his skull.
Vince was fuming at Ringside & rightfully so. He had already had one of his top talents turn up f*cked up & hardly able to go in Hawk. Vince never forgave Smith and got the title off him at the first opportunity on SNME then sacked him no sweat over the HGH.
as Cornette, Prichard, Ross, Bret & countless others have said? he would never trust him completely again.

I know its a common thing to look back and go "should ___ have gotten..." but not everyone should be champion. Not everyone should be the Quarterback and not everyone should be the CEO. Some people are just better fit in roles they were in. Guys like Davy, Perfect, Piper etc may have been very well over...and that was their job, but they werent and never were going to be on the level both popularity as well as merchandising as someone like Hogan, Warrior, Savage etc. I think He would have if he had behaved himself in 1992 but as it stands? JMO, while there is no evidence to prove either way. The only reason Davy was in the main event of that card was because of location. SummerSlam '92 takes place in Los Angeles or Philadelphia or anywhere in the US then Savage-Warrior goes on last. I think it was more about location and less about Vinces faith in Davy.

Yes location was bound to be a factor but Vince wouldn't have put him in that spot if he had no faith in him. Especially in the winners spot.

I liked Davy boy but the answer is no. As it is/was back then he blew his opportunity with his drug issues. You don’t reward a guy to be the face of your company when you have lost all faith in his ability to stay clean.
