I just classify things myself...
1970-1999 =Legends 2000-2008 = Flashbacks 2008-current = Current guys
Essentially I reserve anything pre Mattel as a Legend/Flashback but further categorize it.

How does anyone not want a Chris Hero figure? 🤷🏽♂️ I don’t want a Chris Hero figure or a Kassius Ohno figure.

Labeling something a flashback or not is pointless. The first King Booker was labeled a flashback by Mattel and it was based on something only six years in the past at the time.

If it’s not current, it’s a flashback

If it’s not current, it’s a flashback Then what's considered a legend?

I feel like the early years of Mattel’s are now flashbacks if you wanted to move them to a Legends/FB display. Good point.

If I want it..it’s a flashback So you didnt want E69 Liv Morgan, E71 Kassius Ohno, E74 Peyton Royce and E75 Billie Kay? Not at all. Especially Ohno. Only legends for this guy.

I think for one’s own collection it’s whatever arbitrary way you want. (For example, I have stuff split into pre and post September of 06 because that’s when I started college).

For me, the cutoff is January 1st 2010.
Because of, you know, reasons.
In all seriousness, it depends on the figure/superstar. Look at E76 Cena. That's absolutely a flashback. But they could put out a Kane from the same time period and it wouldn't feel like a flashback.
Why?
Well because, at the time that Mattel started making figures, Kane was still looking like that. The early Kane Mattel figures looked just like 2006 Kane, more or less. So, IMHO, for a Kane to be a flashback figure, it has to be from no later than his original unmasking.
However, if for some unknown reason they were to make a 2009 Shane figure? It'd be a flashback. Because it's before the period when Mattel started making figures of him.
Basically? If Mattel made a current look FTiL figure of him in the last 10 years, that's the cutoff point for me. You could make a 2010 MVP figure in the same style as his original figure and it wouldn't feel like a flashback to me. But pretty much any pre-return Jeff Hardy figure is a flashback figure for me because he never got his (officially released) shot until much later.
It's all very complex.
Oh, and it should be noted that I draw a line between "Flashback" and "Legends" figures. Anything prior to the Attitude Era falls into the category of "Legends" for me, mostly because that's my personal frame of reference. Literally, everything before then is viewed as a legend (as in "story" or "folklore") for me because I hadn't started watching yet.

Fair enough, but his appearance as the Doctor of Thuganomics was a flashback in an of itself, so I count it. It may not strictly be a flashback figure, but his appearance as that gimmick was a flashback. Think if current Kane suddenly showed up in his 1999 attire and then they made a figure of that. IMHO, it counts. Like I said, it depends on the superstar.

It shouldn’t be that difficult to figure out. Look at the figure and go “does this look like the same guy that’s appeared on my TV within the last year or so?” If the answer is no then it’s likely a flashback. Here are some recent examples.

Anything steps away from current wrestler attire is flashback.
Shield Rollins would be a flashback in that sense but king slayer Rollins wouldn't.

I have tried my absolute damndest to ignore the dad hair. For years now I have. It's why I haven't pulled the trigger on E64 yet. It seems like one of his best Elites ever, but that hair just ruins it for me. What I'd give for his UE fig. Sadly my reluctance against preorders did me in.
