Does anyone know why the WWE used this logo for the WCW invasion angle? I don't ever remember this being used in WCW but I wasn't watching in 2000-2001. It always seemed odd to me that they used this logo.

Probably Vince just wanted to make it his own design and not use any of the established logos.

Since Vince purchased his greatest rival he probably wanted to make his mark by redesigning the logo.

My whole problem with this is why would you change the logo when you are trying to convince people that there is an invasion happening. How are the WCW fans supposed to get behind something that is totally unrecognizable. They kept the ECW logo so why change this one? I didn’t know if there was a legal issue with the trademarks at the time or if it was just an ego decision.

I think WWE sold a hat with that logo a few years ago

They were using it prior to the invasion. The plan was to have their own show but couldn’t a slot. Makes sense to rebrand with a new look since the product was horrible during its last couple years. Plus the 1999 logo sucked so bad.

It was first used in March or April 99 when the company re-branded itself and was used up until they went out of business. To be honest i didn't even know until like 2005 that it was the WCW initials. Its so ugly and unorganized. People used to call it the bird $hit logo.

I know the 99 logo was horrible but my whole thing is that it had brand awareness. People recognized it as the WCW logo...for better or worse. If you want to create the illusion of an invasion why would you change the only thing left that reminds people of what it once was. If anything they should have used the classic WCW logo if they didn't like the 99 one. They didn't change the ECW logo so why change this one?

The idea was that the InVasion Angle would be brief, and that WCW would take on its own brand entity. We all know how much Vince loves to make an outside property his own in some way, shape or form. At the time, there was a major storyline revolving around Vince and Linda McMahon's divorce - which would see the assets of the company split in half. Shane McMahon "bought" WCW, and I believe the intention was Linda would side with the babyface Shane against the evil Vince and give him RAW is WAR. Hence why there was that match with Buff Bagwell and Booker T. There were WCW house shows and television tapings planned as early as May/June 2001, prior to the big Invasion commencing. For unknown reasons, probably due to lack of star power and TV deal, these shows kept being axed. The big stars outside of Booker, DDP and Bagwell (if you wanna be polite about him) refused to get off their asses to work for their money, and understandably so considering they were technically signed to Turner, WCW's parent company. Nash, Goldberg, Steiner, Mysterio all came in when their deals with Turner ran out, or even later.
The problem was, no television company wanted anything to do with the WCW letters, let alone the brand. WWF Axxess was the result of a pitch made by WWF to TNN, to create a whole new show designed for WCW. TNN felt WWF had too many hours of television as is, and retconned the idea of introducing another show designed for in-ring content. In the summer of 2001, with the aftermath of WrestleMania X-Seven, WCW and ECW's independent demises, and the boom period continuing to fade, wrestling was losing interest fast.
So originally, the brand split we saw in 2002 was to take place with the advent of a WCW brand opposing the WWF brand. WCW would take some WWF guys, and they would each take a show every week. The Draft we saw in March 2002 was planned as early as September 2001, with ratings continuing to plummet due to a staling product/the Invasion failing. January 2002 was the next planned date, with Ric Flair and Vince McMahon portraying battling Co-Owners of the company. Finally, they went with that post-Mania instead.

The logo was the least of the problems of the invasion. No one looked at it going “I’m confused is this WCW or not? I know it says WCW but it doesn’t look like the logo I remember.” If there was any confusion it woulda not recognizing names like Mark Jindrak, Sean O’Haire, Chuck Polumbo, Gregory Helms, etc.

They didn’t have the top wrestlers or the tv spots anymore so it just seemed odd to change the logo. Whatever tho. DTP. Gave the explanation I was looking for. I wasn’t trying to debate weather they should have changed it or not. I really just wanted to know why they decided to do so.

I never realized people hated the 1999 logo so much. I always thought it was kinda cool.
